Sunday showed how much we’ve missed Greenwood, 18 disposals of which 16 were contested and we’ve been getting smashed in contested ball.

2 goals also shows what a threat he can be up forward.

This was his first game so he will only get better.
That shark & snap on the goal line showed what a powerful presence he brings

Somebody, anybody (AmericanCrow ?? deaneus ?) --- what happened? (Just got home 11p.m., 8 pages behind.)
Drove down to Cape Jervis with a mate, listened to first quarter on ute radio, sounded like totally crap game. Heard that Gibbs looked out-of-sorts, talking with Pyke on bench. Pyke talking to Walker, also.
Heard Murphy's name a lot that quarter.
Went fishing, not optimistic.

Couldn't help myself, checked in halfway through 3rd quarter, wtf? :oops:o_O

49 points up at 3/4 time!! More fishing, checked again, YAHOOEY!! 73 point win, Betts 6-goals, commentators raving about a left-foot checkside goal of his (??). Gotta watch AFC website highlights.

Seriously --- what happened? :D:D
Sorry mate, life jumped in front of me so slow in responding. From my point of view we played a bit better and smarter, but it certainly was also a case of Gold Coast stepping up in class. Their record was a gift of the schedule gods in my opinion.

I think we get a truer test of where we sit this weekend

So we agree it wasn't an excellent game. You are having a few David Mackay moments in this thread yourself.
He was good all game IMO.
But of course he was best when the game style suited his game style?

Thought this was obvious enough.

Its like how when its a wet slog guys like Crouch rise to the top, whereas in a free flowing open game you dont see him as much.

Yeah mate, life. Always intrudes .
Saints/ Dockers/ PA next three games. Pre-season, I thought we'd be 4-4 after 8 rounds; wasn't very optimistic, I know.
All 3 could go either way --- Saints are flying, Dockers did us last year and are 3-2, and PA look threatening.
Did you see any of PA's win over the WCE? One tactic they used with great effect was to mongrel the ball forward, deliberately. Ollie Wines let slip post-game it was a Coaching plan to take out WCE's intercept-marking defenders, especially McGovern. The forwards were told to get in front in the F50 and expect the ball to be coming in low, maybe even grubbed, which they executed really well. Chaos ball, coming in.
Several footy shows commented on the tactic and even Nathan Buckley said he was going to have a good look at that game. Hinkley might have worked out a tactic to beat WCE!
Only one thing I like about this year's start is that we can certainly improve and might be playing our best footy in the second half of the year.

There are some significant numbers in here, not the least of which was our 169 contested possessions, best for the Round.
Walker, 5 marks on the lead, all i50.
Sloane, a round-high 20 contested possessions. TWENTY!! :oops:o_O

"The Crows also had the most contested marks (15) and hard ball gets (65) in Round Five, with Cam Ellis-Yolmen (nine), Hugh Greenwood (eight) and Sloane (seven) all in the top three for hard ball gets across the competition. ".

I'm still dizzy from the Mackay ==> Betts goal.
Mackay tackles hard (in itself a good thing), gets up quickly, runs hard, gets handball, good footpass, keeps running hard, gets handball from his own footpass recipient, then bullet to Betts. That's EIGHT efforts, in one passage of play!
Still, I gotta say when I see him do that, see what he's capable of, I wonder why he doesn't do it more often.
Anybody think he got the message from Pyke?

Just watched the replay of the suns game....

Didn’t notice it as much when i watched the game live but geez brad crouch had a shocker... lost count of how many poor hand passes he made to team mates under pressure and his kicking wasn’t that great either.. seemed like he sure of himself.. hopefully it was just a bad week for him.

Gibbs wasn’t much better and Lynch was horrid in that first half but did improve in the second half.

One thing I did find interesting was Lukoscious kicking his first goal in AFL... normally this results in the entire team running over to surround the new player and congratulate him on his first no matter if the team is winning or losing the game at that point... no interest whatsoever for Luko’s first though.. a couple of team mates did the usual high fives but that’s all and they were blokes that just happened to be in the vicinity of him at the time.

Is he not liked by him team mates?..

David Mackay does a couple of really great things in about 1 out of every three or four games.. he did some good things in round 2... did some good things in round 5.

I expect the David we all know best will be back in the next couple of rounds.. you watch.

Something is funny with Betts' statistics.
He had 14 possessions at 57%, allegedly, yet kicked 6.3. If all scores counted, it would be 64%, so points aren't counted as effective disposals: is that right?
So you kick a point after siren to win match and yet it isn’t counted as effective??? Tad harsh.

Watched the replay for the first time. Keith and O'Brien are developing nicely. Hartigans mark in the 2nd was incredibly couragous. We played with much more aggression and our forward line functioned much better. Just a shame the injuries keep mounting.

He does that all the time - he just fluffs the last part - and kicks it lace out to the other team. Hasn't been as bad this year IMO - he owes us a good year before we hopefully phase him out.
