Their are quite a few players that were pre-listed by Gold Coast and GWS that are starting to make a real impact at their club:

GC: Krakouer (COLL), Berwick & Zorko (BRIS), Mzungu (FRE).
GWS: Morris (RICH), Clarke & Elliott ( COLL), Milera & Saad (STK).

All of them would easily be in their respective GC/GWS best 22 and with the exception of Andrew Krakouer, all of them are still quite young too. Makes me think why didn't GC/GWS didn't keep them on their list, they would of been in much better shape.

Collingwood have another 2 in the VFL in Ceglar and Yagmoor prelisted from Gold Coast whom are developing really well and would probably get a game quite easily in Gold Coast team.

Have GC/GWS recruiters massively stuffed up? I understand these players were identified by the teams recruiters who were trading for them but surely GC and GWS should of done their due diligence that potentially they could be trading a future 100+ game player that they could of kept. Kudos seems in place to the teams like Brisbane and Collingwood who have have made out like bandits with these prelisted players without giving up anything significant in value.

You have to remember that GWS/GC have to shrink their list at the end of every year. I can't speak for GWS, but GC have missed out on a few mature age players because they had to trade for picks, which they then upgraded to a higher pick because of their shrinking list.

The Bewick pick was part of the Brennan trade if I recall correctly, and he wouldn't be in our 22 I don't think. But the only reason the Suns didn't pick up Zorko is because they had to shrink their list by 6 or 7. Forget the exact number. After picking up the minimum amount of players in the draft along with two other mature agers in Hall and Horsley, one who was a rookie, there was just no room for Zorko. Similiar story for Yagmoor.

So at the end of 2011, using the picks we got from Zorko and Yagmoor, we then traded this number of picks to others for the one end of first round pick, who we used in the draft. So Zorko and Yagmoor into Henry Schade. Turning 2 into 1. Just what we had to do to accomodate.

You have to realise that GWS/GC prelisted a lot of these players so that they could be traded to gain picks/other players. GWS traded a few of these for high picks in the national draft so they haven't really done too badly. GC on the other hand have not done all that well recruiting wise but still Elliot would not look as good as he does in a team that gets beaten every week.

i dont have all the players that have been pre-listed and traded away but i have the ones that were traded to the pies and indirectly involved in on trading.

i think players like peter yagmoor & dayne zorko were zoned players as opposed pre-listed players

GWS and GC have first crack at the zone picks this year. The GWS zone also includes NT.

This is the last year for the zone priorities. Next year the academies will kick in.

Can you inform us of how the academies will work, Quigs? Does it work just like the Zone selections? IE: They have first access?

What about the ability to list players who have previously nominated for the draft? like Milera, Saad and morris etc.

Sunny - my understanding is that the academies will work pretty much exactly like the father/son system. That is teams will get to bid for a player and if the Lions, Swans etc want the kid they have to use their next pick on him. So a good advantage but not one out of all proportion.

Toadvine - there is no ability to access previously listed players this coming year.

As much as GC and GWS would have liked to have kept some of these players that wasn't really the point of the pre-listing, They both needed kids and the only way to get more picks is to trade!

Actually that was the point of pre-listing, to get them some experience and mature players without having to use draft picks. That they decided to move pretty much all of them on for draft and compensation picks was a list strategy.

Same with the WS u/17 mini draft selections, that's why they couldn't keep the picks or get them traded back.

Nice summary, never really realised what a single-minded tack Western Sydney took with their pre-lists. Astonishing that they traded away four players who would all most likely play regular senior football for them for a single compensation pick.

That compo pick better turn out to be a very special player.

zorko was apart of the warnock trade. as much as we wanted to keep zorko, we needed a key defender.
had to let him go, warnock has been great for us while bocks been out

Not sure if this is worth a new thread, so I'll ask this here.

Is every ex-player a free agent?

How free agency will work
2. A player has served seven seasons or less of AFL football at one club, and has been delisted by his club.

The player is a Free Agent and is eligible to field offers from all rival AFL clubs.

The player must decide on the best offer of his choice from one rival club.

The player can move AUTOMATICALLY to the new club of his choice.

His original club, which chose to delist him, does not receive any compensation pick for the loss of the player.
Would Krakouer have been a free agent under the new rules despite being out of the game for a few years?

It's unclear what happens if they've been out of the game for a year or longer. I suspect this is only applies to those who have been immediately delisted (that year).

I think you'll probably be right but I can't see how a player immediately delisted (James Sellar/ Setanta O'Hailpin) deserves to be a free agent anymore than a player delisted a year a go (Beau Wilkes).
