What happens if we get to the end of the H&A, the Suns can't go any higher or lower, and there is zero point for them to play the make up game? They would only be risking injury.
Do they roll out their VFL team? Forfeit the game?

An excellent idea. Forfeit and hand us the 4 points.
It’s only common sense.

GC wouldn't care. Doesn't impact them. As I said, it's only downside for them to play that game, the potential for players to get injured leading into their first ever finals series.

In all seriousness..I’ve never understood how so many nimrods get annoyed with clubs who rest players in the last H&A game before the finals.

And they only get uptight about it when it’s a A or B grade player. No one cares if it’s a fringe player having a rest.

You want as many as possible of your top 25 players devoid of mild injuries as you hit an elimination or qualifying final.

And if it’s a star that could benefit having a couple of weeks rest then it’s even more valid.

Could say the same thing for any final round game for teams in that position.

There's certainly an advantage being the last game though. You would know exactly what you need to do to make top 2/4/6/8.
That is why the pre-finals bye was brought in. Fremantle and North had done that, without much success. (Yes, there was a time in the bright and shiny far past where North made finals in the mens comp. Anyone under middle age may not be aware of this.)
But two weeks off seems not to be generally not the best way to prepare, while one week's rest can have benefits.

Personally, I think its largely a luck thing and adapting to the luck that gets thrown your way is part of it. If a team is in that position, then so be it. But I recognise that many do feel the other way and it is a perception rather than an evidence based notion.

In 2016 the Bulldogs played Fremantle in the final game of the season on Sunday twilight. Neither team could realistically move from their current ladder position (Bulldogs 7th, Fremantle 16th). Was very much a half hearted performance by the Bulldogs - lost the game against a very poor Freo side, before bringing back 5 players for the elimination final and the rest is history.

Can certainly see Gold Coast doing similar if circumstances align.

Yep.

Case in point.

Stay at home and play FIFA.

Use AI to calculate expected probability of each side winning and split the 4 pts accordingly. So if GC has a 75% change of winning, give them 3 points and Essendon 1. If 40-60%, give them 2. If its 80%+, give them 4.

2013 in the last game Freo made a shit load of changes vs the Saints. Saints were strong favourites to win of course and smashed them. Nothing to play for.

This is what will happen unless the AFL wants to cuddle their Nepo baby and give them a game off, assuming Essendon has dropped out of finals contention.

Hopefully the media make a big song and dance about how opening round and the AFL's dumb fixturing caused it, not due to the weather.

Dockers were 1.14 then went out to like 2.25. Dockers could have got 2nd spot actually but Lyon assumed Cats would beat Brisbane who ended up winning by a point. Game kicked off same time or about 25mins later afl tables 2013 reveals all.

It didn't matter anyway since we beat Geelong away in the qualifying final. Maybe that doesn't happen if we don't rest players.
