2020 Gold Coast SUNS NAB Rising star prospects:

PICK 1 - Matt Rowell:

Noteworthy performances:
Round 1 vs Port Adelaide: 19 disposals, 11 contested, 3 clearances, 4 tackles
Round 2 vs West Coast: 26 disposals, 14 contested, 5 clearances, 2 goals, 7 tackles, 1 goal assist.
Round 3 vs Adelaide: 20 disposals, 12 contested, 3 clearances, 2 goals, 10 tackles
Round 4 vs Fremantle: 20 disposals, 12 contested, 7 clearances, 2 goals, 5 tackles

Verdict: Would have won in a landslide had he not dislocated his shoulder. The best first 4 games by any draftee, possibly ever.

PICK 2 - Noah Anderson:

Noteworthy performances:
Round 2 vs West Coast: 19 disposals, 6 contested, 5 marks, 1 goal, 2 tackles
Round 7 vs Sydney: 15 disposals, 6 contested, 5 marks, 1 goal, 1 behind, 3 tackles

Verdict: Jet, playing a wing role well. Nomination in round 7 was well deserved but has flown under the radar due to Rowell and Rankine. Very impressed

PICK 11 Sam Flanders:

Noteworthy performances:

Verdict:
Yet to play. Will be available for the award in 2021.

PICK 27 Jeremy Sharp:

Noteworthy performances:

Verdict:
Yet to play. Will be available for the award in 2021.

Pre-selected rookie - Connor Budarick:

Noteworthy performances:
Round 3 vs Adelaide: 16 disposals, 6 contested, 6 marks, 1 goal, 315m gained

Verdict: Has been a really solid pick up from the academy. Competitive lockdown small defender with a lot of flair. Was good to see him get the recognition.

NON-FIRST YEAR PLAYERS:

PICK 3 2018 Izak Rankine:

Noteworthy performances:
Round 6 vs Melbourne: 12 disposals, 7 contested, 3 goals, 3 behinds, 3 tackles, 1 goal assist
Round 7 vs Sydney: 16 disposals, 8 contested, 2 goals, 2 behinds, 4 tackles, 1 goal assist

Verdict: Injury free and he wins it by the length of the flemington straight. Electric.

PICK 23 Jez Mclennan:

Noteworthy performances:

Verdict:
Yet to play. Will be available for the award in 2021.

Rankine at $13 is great value in my opinion.
Agree. One of the few draftees from this year that looks likely to play each week, and at a high standard. McLennan at $67 represents value too if he can hold his spot

2019 Gold Coast SUNS NAB Rising star prospects:

PICK 2 - JACK LUKOSIUS:
U18 stats:

Games: 4
Avg disposals: 15
Avg Kicks: 12
Avg Handballs: 3
Avg Marks: 7.8
Goals: 9

Verdict: Hard to say. Not even Lance Franklin was a gun key forward year 1. expectation should be around 15 - 25 goals (provided he play the whole season) and general improvement throughout the season. Will need to put on weight to compete at AFL level and he'll be playing undersized early in his career, though that shouldn't be an issue as he played undersized in the SANFL most of this year and last. Long lead, beautiful kick, very athletic 2nd or 3rd tall that takes a lot of marks. Should expect a nomination at some point, but first year KPF's rarely win the NAB Rising Star. Huge wraps internally and our first top 2 pick since year 1 means he should get plenty of games since Lynch defected. Rated by many as the best KPF to come through the system in years so anything is possible.

PICK 3 - IZAK RANKINE:
U18 stats:

Games: 4
Avg disposals: 15
Avg Kicks: 12
Avg Handballs: 3.8
Avg Marks: 3.8
Goals: 12

Verdict: Human highlight reel. Would be surprised if he plays any NEAFL football at all. Club has said they do see him moving into the midfield eventually and he has the size to compete straight away. Ranked by many as the No.1 player in the draft and GWS recruiters have definitively stated they would have taken him at No.1. only dual U18 All Australian in the draft. Will definitely give the award a shake.

PICK 6 - BEN KING:

U18 stats:

Games: 4
Avg disposals: 11.8
Avg Kicks: 7
Avg Handballs: 2.5
Avg Marks: 4.8
Goals: 12

Verdict: Also hard to say. Played as a dominant key forward at the U18 champs after his brother Max went down with a torn ACL. Does he return to playing as a KPD where he was rated best on ground in the U18 VS Werribee or does he continue as a KPF where he kicked = most goals at the U18 championships? Ridiculously quick for a bloke 200cm+ tall but looks a little light. Supposedly being rated big time internally and wouldn't surprise if he received a nomination and played a big chunk of the season.

PICK 23 - JEZ MCLENNAN

U18 stats:

Games: 4
Avg disposals: 13
Avg Kicks: 6
Avg Handballs: 7
Avg Marks: 5.3
Goals: -

Verdict: Club traded up to get him. Obviously rated highly. Will need to force his way into the side I assume but with Kolodjashnij gone theres is a spot at half-back. Senior football experience at SANFL level and a strong intercept marking defender with a bigger body. a little bit wait-and-see on how much game time in the firsts he gets.

PICK 71 - CALEB GRAHAM:

U18 stats:

Games: 3
Avg disposals: 6.3
Avg Kicks: 3
Avg Handballs: 3.3
Avg Marks: 2
Goals: -

Verdict: Provided we don't lose all out KPD's to injury this season again, I doubt he plays firsts. Bit of a project key defender with a big physical element to his game. Not a big disposal winner, more of a shutdown defender and seems unlikely to get a nom.

Second Year Players:

WIL POWELL:

2018 avg:

games:
7
Kicks: 5.29
Handballs: 3.43
Marks: 2.57
Disposals: 8.71
Total Goals: 2

Best individual game: Round 16 VS NM: 15 disposals (8 contested, 13 effective), 5 marks, 1 tackle, 0 goals

Verdict: Another pre-season under his belt and he looks a lot bigger. played more than any expected in 2018 and competed really well for how small he was. needs to kick more goals, but he's classy with the ball and is a one grab mark. Possible nomination, but still on the light side, so doubt he plays the full season.

BRAYDEN CROSSLEY:

2018 avg:

games: 10
Kicks: 4.5
Handballs: 4.9
Marks: 2.4
Disposals: 0
Total Goals: 5

Best individual game: Round 7 VS WB: 13 disposals (9 contested, 8 effective), 2 marks, 5 tackles, 1.1 goals

Verdict: No Lynch and no Wright meant he played more than expected in a position not necessarily suited for but looked the goods in patches. consistency will be key but he gets a lot of love from commentators and does some solid work in the air and on the physical side of things. Will need to do more to get or maintain a spot in the side provided Wright, King, Lukosius, and Corbett are all healthy. Nomination wouldn't surprise but not guarantee of first team selection with a healthy team to choose from. Could be backup if Witts goes down too.

CONNOR NUTTING:

2018 avg: N/A
Verdict: Needs improvement. Make or break season but would surprise if he broke into the team.

JACOB DAWSON:

2018 avg:

games: 3
Kicks: 4.33
Handballs: 11
Marks: 2.33
Disposals: 15.33
Total Goals: 1

Best individual game: Round 20 VS Melbourne: 18 disposals (6 contested, 13 effective), 3 marks, 2 tackles, 4 clearances, 0 goals

Verdict: Big time accumulator in the NEAFL as an 18 year old bodes well for the future. Lacks a bit of damage per disposal and is a little bit on the slower side, but like what I saw and improved each game. Could definitely force his way back in for games during the season again but would seem unlikely to get a nomination.

JACOB HERON:

2018 avg:

games: 8
Kicks: 3.5
Handballs: 5.25
Marks: 1.63
Disposals: 8.75
Total Goals: 2

Best individual game: Round 18 VS Sydney: 12 disposals (6 contested, 6 effective) 4 marks, 1 tackle, 1.3 goals

Verdict: Similar to Powell, did much better than expected for how small he was. His game against Sydney I actually thought was fantastic and had he had a little more composure with set shots, 12 disposals, 9 effective and 4 goals in an upset win probably would have earned him a nomination this year. Another wait and see because he'll be behind Rankine, MacPherson, Ainsworth, Ah Chee and probably Lemmens with a healthy list.

Discuss.

No Brad Scheer....????

Cavarra at $67 - if he is named in Rd 1 that is sensational value.

If he starts well early could triple your money by cashing out by rd 6

If that's Ben Cavarra - he's ineligible - not under 21 years as at Jan 1.
If it was a first year player award - Tim Kelly would have bolted in last year. .!

Maybe there to take money from the ill informed..
They'd even take a bet put on Jack Riewoldt to win it....

Well betting on Bewley was suspended.. same scenario
They can't take money on a horse thats not in the race.

Powell deserves a nomination. The judges seem to have forgotten about him. He's getting knocked around a bit, but has shown a massive improvement on his 2018 form.

I don't think I could say just yet Powell has deserved his chance over others but if he continues his improved play he could get recognised with a big game in the back half of the year.

Despite the influx of talent we've not had as many rising star nominees as hoped over the past 5 years.

B King R19 2019 - 9 possessions, 5 marks, 4 goals
B Ainsworth R22 2017 - 10 possessions, 6 marks, 3 goals
P Wright R15 2016 - 14 possessions, 10 marks, 3 goals
A Saad R4 2015 - 26 possessions, 7 marks, 3 tackles
T Miller R16 2015 - 27 possessions, 5 marks, 2 goals, 5 tackles

This year, I have a feeling this will change.

Eligible 2020 Gold Coast Suns Rising stars (and winning odds as per sportsbet)

Matt Rowell ($3.50)
Isak Rankine ($6)
Noah Anderson ($8)
Sam Flanders ($34)
Jeremy Sharp ($41)
Jen Mclennan
Caleb Graham
Connor Budarick
Malcolm Rosas
Matt Conroy
Mitch Riordan
Sam Fletcher
Jacob Dawson
Luke Towey

I would expect at least 3 nominations. 4 would be great. 5 or more would be a dream but probably unrealistic.

Will follow the progress of our young rising stars in this thread going forward.
