I have always thought of him as having a lot of parallels with Steve Waugh.
Smith's more talented than Waugh ever was, if he's as single minded he'll be some player. I just wish he'd practice his leggies more.

If smith wasn't Victorian, he'd be captain. Ironic really.

Full name Steven Peter Devereux Smith
Born June 2, 1989, Sydney, New South Wales

whoops...

Steve Smith reminds of of guys like Langer and Martyn, who had very early exposure to the national team (some would argue too early), got dropped which made them hungrier for success

might be a little early to make that comparison, but his form since coming back in for the Ashes last year has been very good.

+1 Steve Waugh comparison. Their batting styles vary a bit but definitely parallels in their career path although smith's is nowhere near finished. Think he's no more than a part time option with the ball these days. Bowls some good balls but a lot of his stuff is tripe and if he's going to captain and potentially be Australia's best batter along with warner, it would be overload.

That's what's really impressed me about the bloke. I thought that he was exposed too early, however to be dropped, go back and work hard on your game, and return a more polished (and yes, hungrier) player speaks volumes

His mentality is very Steve Waugh-like, I think. Like SW he doesn't have the greatest skills going around, but is very aware of his strengths and weaknesses and almost always finds a way to grind out runs regardless of the conditions.

The bloody-minded way in which he approached batting during the India tour last year really impressed me. He may not have scored a ton of runs but the mentality was there.

Sorry typo, Clarke has his favorites and those he's afraid of. Smith is one but not the other.

That's why Clarke actually had a go at the selectors for not picking Smith?

Forget team selection, the opening Test of the summer at the 'Gabba means one thing: the mad dash to the German club across the street to be first in-line for a pint at the lunch break. A Brisbane institution.

Phil Hughes has copped one on the head and collapsed. He was medicabbed of the field and early tea taken. I really hope he's okay it sounds really nasty.

Hit on left side, he's a left hander, cpr'd twice, in critical condition. His mother and sister were at the ground. Reported blow exasperated other issues.
