That's two votes Crimson, one vote Caesar.

Judgement - Messenger

I'd like to start by thanking Pumbi for beginning this competition and gogriff for seeing it through to the end.

This is the best debate I've judged by far. A credit to both the competitors.

Winner: Mates

Two compelling arguments but those put forward by the mates side of the argument ring true to me. Relationships require tending and a sacrifice made in an instance like this is often repaid with trust later on. They can, however, restrict you movements even further.

While the logistics of getting mates together can be difficult, I'm swayed by the idea of losing touch with a group of people often more loyal and accommodating of your personal foibles that a prospective life partner. They often ask little; so when they do ask the call should be answered.

A good girlfriend/wife (and a big hello to my bride) lets you do both.

I hope you can all join us from 7pm tomorrow as we read the remaining votes - Crimson Azure currently leads Caesar 2-1 with Ochre, getthefooty, Lazarus, Ben the Gooner, spud_jjj and Freakie's votes yet to be counted

Way to drag it out gg, it's like an episode of big brother.

Thanks for going witness the parchment too, classy touch.

OK, first things first - the un-moderated reveal of the topic and side allocations:

The Girlfriend side was presented by Crimson Azure
The Mates side was presented by Caesar

Which of the judges had a handle on this, which had no idea, and which are surprised?
well i guessed completely wrong

I knew because I did the original edit, but I can't say it made much difference. In fact, I changed my mind very late in the decision making process.

Yeah, CA fudged the stats a little.
Taken from the Australian Bureau of Statistics:
DIVORCE

The probability that a marriage will end in divorce has been increasing over time. Based on the nuptiality tables, around 28% of marriages entered into in 1985–1987 could be expected to end in divorce. This proportion increased to 33% for all marriages entered into in 2000–2002.
The percentage has trended downwards until the study was completed in 2007.

Well this changes everything, I'll have to rethink my decision.:D:p

Nah not really.

Someone a few pages back suggested gogriff be acknowledged for his hard work on this might have been spudjjj.

I've spoken to Chief; gogriff and Pumbi will be getting BFSC gold memberships as token of our thanks. Excellent work both of you.

Good job Messenger & Chief, we deserved for both of them it would have been tough to keep up with it all.

Oh friggin great, so I decided the winner. Please don't hate me...

Not necessarily. It may have been 5-3 against before you cast your vote, and you just made the margin closer.

At any rate, everyone decided the winner equally because each judge made their decision in a vacuum. It's sort of a variation on Schrodinger's Cat.

In other words, if I lose there will be plenty of bile to go around for everybody who voted against me. :p

Now now Caesar...we all know you're far too chivalrous to attack an innocent female. ;)

But just in case, I think I'll keep my distance from this thread for a while.

Interesting... care to elaborate CA? Anything you think Cesar didn't cover?
This is not so much what he didn't cover but more how I would have dealt with that side of the debate.

I just think that with the demographic of BF & the scope you have with activities/shenanigans you can engage in with you mates it had a bit more width to develop.

As much fun as it is to spend time with your partner, they will be there tomorrow, that would have been a strong focus in my attack of the girlfriend option. And there is nothing more fun than an epic night out with your mates (you know the nights that end with you shaving half your best mates hair off or leaving him to sleep it off in the back yard). I haven't done that for years but they were fun times.

I think I would have come from the "eat, drink & be merry for tomorrow we die" approach.

That's pretty much why I voted for you. The key to the topic in my view was the fact that it's Friday night, the time of the week for enjoying yourself. I was looking for someone to convince me what would be the most fun, not what the most responsible course of action was. Not being able to get your mates together as often was relevant, but you don't see your Grandparents much either, especially not on a Friday night.

That was Caesar's main focus, he definitely covered that

Comparing that to watching Master Chef or something, followed by 'sorry I've got a headache' would have been a decent angle. Perhaps the Mates side didn't suit Caesar, given that he didn't decide to take this approach.

But that's just my opinion - time to find out what the other judges thought!
