First AFL match. 21 possessions and 86% efficiency. Took 9 marks. Excellent effort first up.:thumbsu:

Should play every single game this year.

18 uncontested touches.... hope the balance changes... but otherwise the signs are great!

I think you will find the AFL as a whole is shifting towards unconested possession. Still better than Fiora, even if the balance does not change.

Also it was great to read he played 97% of the game on the ground. Only S.Fisher had more (100%). In such a close game it shows the faith Lyon has in him.

More than happy to have uncontested possessions when you can get some run. Team high 6 bounces is a good stat for him. Given Grammy had his battles, it was great to have another runner to support Sam F.

He was our 5th selection in the rookie draft before the 2007 season.

I can't remember what the exact numbers were but we chose:

Clinton Jones
Luke Van Rheenen
Robbert Eddy
James Wall
Jarryn Geary
Jaydn Attard

Clint Jones and Jarryn Geary were promoted before the 2008 season.

Jayden Attard was unlucky - would've been promoted except he copped a long term injury. The Saints decided that it was economically more prudent to promote Geary and wait on Attard until he's tip top again.

If that is the case great pickup saints :thumbsu:

Went OK on Saturday night - got his possessions mainly as a loose across half back.

However, for a young kid desperate to be part of the 22 he needs to be focused all the time - on one occasion S Fisher kicked from back pocket across to front of goal square to him where no one was around and dropped the mark....if a player was running at him it could have been very bad....if the ball is coming at you with NO PRESSURE you must take it 1st then decide where to go.

Ease up pal, it was his first game. There was pressure everywhere on Saturday night, he did superbly.

Even our most experienced players were doing this on Saturday night. Considering he made the mistake out of 20+ possessions in his first game, I'm easily going to let that slide. His composure is one of his strengths. His team-mates showed a LOT of trust in him & so did the coach as he spent most of the game on the ground.

I think he was second only to Sam Fisher for overall game time actually. So Rossy rates him & so do I!

Probably would've paid for me to read all the posts in this thread! At least my estimates were pretty close with game time.

What year and what draft pick did he go at the AFL site didn't do me any favors !
Pick 58 in last year's rookie draft (so he was overlooked in the 2006 super draft)

Gilbo also played 100% of game time.

Get real!...its AFL not junior footy

The lad played in the NAB - yeah prob not same intensity however there was no-one within 20 metres of him when the ball was kick to him - where was the pressure there?

So what should Jarryn Geary have done differently? Was it his fault that he was free? He did everything he was told to do. You can only do what job the coach asks of you & as far as that goes, he did it to a T.

Clearly a lapse in concentration, but it was the best lesson for a young player. A mistake which cost the team nothing. I think he followed up and hit someone on the chest? Very happy to forgive him for that one.

Uh that happens a lot actually, it happened in the dons v roos game. Defender knows they have like 50 metres of free space so they look where to kick it before they've got the mark. Dunno how you can be criticising someone about dropping a mark with no pressure, jeez you should be happy he dropped it then, rather than with 10 players around him! First game as well, give him some slack...

Thats you opinion Mick thats fine.

Mine is that there are 4-5 Geary's in the team eg Birss, Arma etc and they need to grab their chance. You can't do anything with the ball unless you have the thing!...that's what he needs to concentrate on at this early stage..that is MY opinion, thats all. I'm not putting the kid down, just making a comment.

If there was no pressure, explain why great set shots at goal were failing to convert and the teams kicked 12.28 total?

There was pressure there my friend.
