He's very similar to Darcy Moore. Both are heavily reliant on the system around them.

When the pressure up the field is there on the ball carrier the likes of Stewart, Henry, and especially Kolo are firing on all cylinders (Howe, Frampton, and Murphy previously for them) they can look like the players everyone expects them to be.

If we’re forcing rushed kicks and pushing our intercept press higher, SDK holds his own.

But when the ball’s coming in at express pace, he’s often caught out. Outbodied and trailing his man by five metres, much like Moore.

It’s disappointing when you think back to the heights we expected he’d reach by now in 2022 (AA level), but he’s not a lost cause.

He’s just one of those modern defenders who need a lot going right in the system to shine, which is becoming more common in the post–1v1 era.

On the bright side, I COS will end up being the footballer we expected SDK to be IMO.
He's almost a carbon copy of the current Darcy Moore no doubt.

Darcy Moore has been the same guy the whole time, he's just been exposed since Murphy retired, and even more so since Howe has been injured.

That's the point. He didn't just magically forget how to play football two years ago, he just isn't covered anymore as a 1v1 defender.

SDK is the same.

60 games for any player, let alone KPD there is still a lot to learn and mature into. Let’s see how he is at 100. Kolo was a real slow burn as well, Blicavs and Scarlett even to an extent. He frustrates me but there is a heap of talent and scope to work with

The cats got the job done. The bombers threw everything at them and made it interesting. It was a good challenge in the end with the bombers having excellent patches of high pressure football.

The umpiring was definitely sub-par with a few more dodgy decisions falling the bombers’ way, but it only helped make the game heat up and demand a response from the cats.

It also got a bit heated in the Geelong game day thread. Hopefully people have calmed down now 😬

It's interesting when you consider that one of the recent points of discussion around our run into September is about how on paper it looked a potentially easy draw, some thinking it was maybe too easy and we wouldn't receive a tough match on the run home to help prepare for finals

Well tonight we got a tougher match than it looked on paper like it may have been, and while we didn't play the perfect game, we did manage to get the job done and win by 44 points

The main focus going into tonight would have been to bank the 4 points - with how the game played out, I dare say that the coaches learnt more from these 4 quarters than they did from our previous 8

As fans we won't look to tonight to be on any highlights reel, but if the club can take some key learnings from tonight, then surely that's a positive as we head into September

We need to get Stengles goal kicking sorted out before finals, he is missing so many easy shots.
Not liking the selfishness either in recent times. Took about four marks off Shannon a few weeks back by giving away frees, and has burned teammates consistently since he came back.

He's a gun, and he's clearly had some personal troubles lately. He'll come through it and out the other side I'm sure.

We'd want to see it change soon though.

How good was it to see Blicavs get the goal kicking monkey off his back

Yes, his first goal was from the goal square but it would have helped with some confidence as we saw with his second goal - that would likely have been a miss or passed off in recent weeks

Honestly and people can say I’m pot shoting but **** me are Knevitt and Clark just not up to it.

Knevitt in particular is an absolute plodder, just jogs up and down the wing at glacial pace. He is simply too slow to be so soft as well.
Honestly thought Knevitt played well and in general I'm far from his biggest fan, is another game where I question how the hell Jhye Clark was ever a top 10 pick though, absolutely useless against rubbish opposition.

Yes.
I'm a Stengle stan but his goalkicking since last year's Prelim has not been as sharp as it was previously.
We need to sort out his selfishness more than anything. He gets the ball inside 50 and don't bother being a teammate in a better position. He's shooting at goal.

But other players kick him the ball when he's in a better position.

With the total number of shots we had, we could've kicked 25.11...

161 Would've been a score that felt about right, but alas.

Also kinda funny to note how different the game experiences are between us and other clubs. Lots of Cats fans last night probably thinking "Boy that was ugly..."

Think about the ugly results Essendon have had this year...

When your bad games are wins, you're a pretty good club.

Interesting to notice many had Stewart in the votes for this game.

The no 1 thought I came away with was how far from his best he looked.

If we're any chance of going all the way we need him firing. His disposal I thought was uncharacteristically sloppy. And he's doing some borderline ill-discipline stuff like last week that make me worry about him getting suspended at the wrong time of year.

Re Knevitt - I hope he stays a cat. I can see plenty of upside. His contested marks in the first quarter were top notch and with his endurance I can see him being a real asset.

I actually thought Clark was ferocious at the ball tonight. A few sensational efforts

Didn’t get enough of it but he looked really dialled in.
Yeah that's what I thought as well... I was at the game and he threw his body into every contest . He tried very hard. I can actually see there is something there, hopefully in the next 12-24 months it clicks into gear

Clark and Knevitt had a lot of nearly moments. Knevitt goal square marks and Clark almost took a sensational mark in defence.

That play sort of summed up Clark’s career so far, he was a bit unlucky, got clattered but it ended up in an Essendon goal. Just feel like things keep going wrong for him.

Knevitt’s excellent marking is a point of difference but he is ponderous in possession and struggles to stay in games.

If we have September injuries, would probably go with Knevitt before Clark, though I think Clark will develop better in the future.

I think we should have run SDK through the ruck more this year. I mean he towelled up Luke Jackson this season. I also think it would have helped his defence play too. I don’t think he is enjoying his football at the moment.

I thought the Cats were playing a bit within themselves and bruise-free in this game, as they were thinking about making the finals, while Essendon came out and just gave it a crack with a nothing-to-lose mindset. Some of our possession was very sloppy, including kicking at goal. Myers was superb. Smith & Holmes were good, too. Jezza kicked 4.5 and missed a few gettable ones. Maybe he's feeling the pressure of expectation at the moment. Stengles' form is worrying; he just doesn't seem to be in the right mind space at the moment. I hope he's OK. I don't think Knevitt or Clark did enough to keep their places in the squad come finals. We got the win and some percentage, and maybe a few things they can look at and work on going forward.

Some were worried that playing bottom-nine sides wouldn't be testing enough on the side leading into finals. But Essendon put paid to that, and I suspect the Swans will do the same next week too. The Catters were tested last night, that's for sure.
