Most rabble think that grand finals are the best judge of success. Thats rubbish, most top four finishes after home and away games are played is where its at.
I get it now.
On this Basis Ross Lyon is indeed a master-coach!

Very pleased with yet another successful year and hoping for at least one more top four before we lose a few more to retirements, go cats.

Great record. As far as precedent, Dees went top four every year from 1954-1964 inclusive (less teams though) and won six flags.
If Melbourne won a couple of Premierships in the next couple of years - their golden era of 6 flags which you alluded to - and the players who comprised it - would get alot more publicity and acknowledgement now and deservedly so - its just their been so ordinary for so long .

There is certainly a question of finals fragility especially from 2012 onwards but the H&A record is quite outstanding - pity it doesn't count for much at the end of the day.

I am impressed we are top 4 with our current list which really isn't very good.

Geelong's sustained run in the top part of the ladder has been remarkable, no doubt.
However there have been far greater achievements and examples of sustained success over the history of the VFL / AFL using other, more significant measures of success.

For example both Collingwood (1927 - 36) and Melbourne (1955-64) won six premierships within ten year windows.
Richmond won 4 from 8 between 1967 and 1974, and as mentioned Hawthorn 4 flags between 2008 and 2015, Hawthorn also having won 5 flags in 9 years from 1983 to 1991.

The argument against those old achievements is always that there were fewer teams, no salary cap etc. Which I accept, but also note that at least in theory, other clubs in those eras had the same opportunity to build amazing records. For example, what was to stop the other 11 clubs getting to the level of Melbourne in the 50's? If it was simply that Melbourne was by far the best run Club, best coached and looked after its players the best, then the inability of their competitors to match them does not diminish their achievement.

I reiterate that Geelong have had a fantastic era, and have stayed close to the top despite almost completely turning over the 2007 flag team. However, to me unprecedented means best ever, and their era is not that.

You'd take the 4 flags, but in reality it was a quarter of football where the underdogs found some luck. Compared to two entire years of not finishing top 4.

Hawthorn were really lucky to achieve what they did.
Yeah, because when Geelong win they are FANTASTIC, but when Hawthorn win, they are just lucky. Typical crap Geelong logic. Get a clue.

Over the last 11 years Hawthorn have won 4 flags, Geelong have won 3. Hawthorn won 3 in a row. Hawthorn are better. Top 4 means stuff all if you can't convert.

If Geelong win the flag, then that could be said about them, until then though....

Geez 8 times top 2. That is outstanding. Basically means at least two finals in Victoria each year.

One wonders how I've had any money left for spring racing carnival after constantly ponying up for finals tickets.

What is the point of a team finish consistently in the top 4, when you don't win a premiership. I would rather take a team who wins one premiership and a few wooden spoons within the last 10 years, rather than a team who consistently finishes top two, but doesn't win any premiership.
Even though geelong has been more consistent in the last 10 years, no one's going to remember that they finished in the top 2 eight times. Greatness is in the number of premierships you have won.
