Geelong was a highly skilled but free wheeling side having their first taste in 2007.

The Hawks 2014 was also supremely skilled but also hardened with a tough edge and more tactically refined.

To be honest I think the Hawks would have done much the same as they did to the Swans in that game.

2011 is like the hidden final, never brought up by the Hawthorn contingent. Beat the Hawks in the QF, then got over the Pies in the GF who the Hawks stumbled against in the PF. Big year.

Hawks were always a clear 3rd best that season despite having a better year than a lot of minor premiers.

Not really sure what the "never brought up comment" is about. The Hawks blew a great chance to make a GF after we lost against the more fancied opponent in the prelim after leading for most of the night. The 2011 PF and 2012 GF is referenced a lot by Hawks supporters as part of what made them such a hardened side over the 3peat.

2011 Narrow PF defeat
2012 Narrow GF defeat
2013 Premiers
2014 Premiers
2015 Premiers

That's an amazing run.

It's not brought up because we were still a solid team with massive holes that needed fixing, happy to concede we were 3rd best that season, Cats and Pies were much more complete teams.

So let me get this straight. Geelongs era of dominance was between 2007 and 2011 and Hawthorns was 2007-2015

Cats won 2007, 2009 and 2011

Hawks won 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2015

The only time they faced off was in Geelongs era and Hawks won.

4 premierships vs 3

Am I missing something.

Hawks easily. Like in 2014, we would have smashed them.

Yes you are. Geelong’s team was better.

Achievement vs Quality.

Would the Geelong 2008 and Geelong 2010 sides roll the Hawthorn 2014 sides as well?

Geelong fell short in those years but they were a force to be reckoned with through the whole 2007-2011 period.

Their 2008 and 2010 sides would probably roll many premiership sides from other years.

Yeah saints 2009/10 sides you could say that about as well. Pies still bloody strong in 2011 too

On paper, Geelong by 10 goals.

Hawthorn got lucky with their window opening up during a time when draft picks were being fed to the new clubs.

Hawthorn’s most dominant year to be honest was probably 2012.

It’s just a shame it all went to sh*t on Grand Final day

Geelong say the same thing about 2008.
Richmond say the same thing about 2018.

Most dominant year during their era yet fell short due to having a bad day/night when it mattered most.

This isn’t supported by figures necessarily but I actually thought our best football was from round 6, 2007 through to the Collingwood thrashing we copped in round 8, 2008.

Statistically that probably isn’t the case but by the second half of 2008 we were scaring teams out of the contest before the game had even started. Prior to that we were simply smashing them

I always flip flop here. I think it has to be Hawthorn or Geelong but my answer changes from week to week. I wish we could have seen the 2007 Geelong team vs the 2014 Hawthorn team as that would have been an amazing game.

Who do you think would win in a game between the two sides?

often cited, never backed up.

hawks added half their 3 time premiership players in those so called compromised drafts

Playing against interstate witches hats is the equivalent of a bye, hawks had 3 byes in a row, Geelong just the one, there is the answer

The real answer is that the only time teams made up of players that played in both the 2014 Hawthorn team and the 2007 Geelong team met in a grand final, Hawthorn won. Easily. Hawthorn 2008 was clearly much worse than Hawthorn 2014. Despite that, with a massive fire in the belly after the 2008 GF loss, the best Geelong could do was string together a bunch of wins in a row where they could mostly just scrape over the line. I don't have any problem admitting the Geelong team circa 2007-2011 was better on paper than the Hawthorn team at that time, but it wasn't by much, and the largely very close results over that period proved it, even if they did all go Geelong's way. On average I'd say Geelong were around a 1 to 2 goal better team than the Hawthorn team of that period (when going head to head against each other, obviously Geelong were having an easier time beating a lot of other teams, by much larger margins than they were beating us by during that time).

Hawthorn then went to another level with their list in 2012-2015, and were fielding a team MUCH stronger than the 2008 team. Geelong with a team very similar to the Geelong 2007 team failed to beat a list close to the 2008 Hawks list in 2006 (two thumpings from Hawthorn , including at the Cattery) AND then lost again against Hawthorn in 2007, before going on to losing to us on the big stage in 2008. Imagine how much worse it would have been for Geelong had Hawthorn 2014 happened in 2007 instead of 7 years later? Every chance Geelong would still be waiting for that elusive draught breaker. What makes Geelong fans think they would do better against the superior 2014 side after having lost 4 of 6 games in the 2006-2008 period against the embryonic Hawthorn side that evolved into the superior 2014 unit.

That's because you never managed to do any of it in a row.

Interesting determining a hypothetical winner when so many people picked Geelong 2008 an mny still think Geelong 2008 would beat Hawthorn 2008 nine times from ten

To be fair the Sydney 2014 side was rated the best list of all time....

Cats were better in 2008-2009 than 2007 imo. I would say the cats would win 2008 gf 19 times out of 20. No harm in saying that.

Even in 2013.. Geelong should have taken that flag. And a few more since. In 20 years time people will look back and wonder how the hell didn't Geelong win 7-8 flags between 2004-2021.

I say this with no agenda or whatever - the numbers from memory don’t quite agree with this but I felt always that Geelong rd 6-Grand Final in 2007 was the best we ever got.

In 08 I felt like we beat sides just because we were Geelong and had teams shot to pieces before we’d started. In 07 we, and other teams, were still finding out what we could do and we played the purest and best football in that period IMO
