Definitely a potentially false economy, if that's the cause.

It is but that and the potential of hubs next year will be the issue with getting good medical staff.

Yes, I hadn't thought about the hubs issue.

It makes it hard for doctors to work for the club on weekends and work in their own practices on other days..they cant do that if the afl puts everyone in hubs plus they might have to be away from their families.

when you work out the hourly pay that those roles receive (they are salary based but are expected to do a lot more work than can be fitted in the hours, and on days off are organising players for scans and specialist consults etc) i can see why you would walk away from it if they offered you a 20% cut for the same role.

Agree especially when you can earn more in private practice.

I'm confident 'Dubs' will have a different view but at first blush it doesn't show our medical team in the best light.

SS was NM physio. (NOT a doctor!) He has a special interest in groins and hips. He may have done work for Crows. Given the departure of our physios and medical team, and that CS and BS know SS very well, makes sense Danger sought his help. We were bereft of anyone. Now we have 2 excellent Docs on the medical team. So you are correct, I disagree with your assertion. We had nobody around, now we do.

Thanks for the explanation. Seeing someone with special expertise makes sense.

Odd that we entered pre-season "bereft of anyone" with medical expertise. I doubt that to be entirely true as it would amount to a form of negligence.

There was a period before preseason that we had our docs and physios leave, and it takes time to recruit the correct people.
They had an overseer present in case of urgent situations. Not negligence at all, just how it was.
There was a mass exodus of staff from many teams post 2020 Covid season.

We had 5 medical staff resign in November, and the pre-season starting not long after:

Geelong will start its AFL pre-season next week without experienced doctors Geoff Allen and Drew Slimmon, who both resigned from the club last week.

The Cats face the “extraordinarily difficult” task of replacing the seasoned sports medicos, while physiotherapists Mark Young and Hamish Macauley and head strength and conditioning coach Chris Dennis are also moving on.

We have since had new staff join the medical team this year:

Dr David Long and Dr Kendall Brooks, who both have experience working in the AFL, have been confirmed as replacements for the esteemed pair and are at the club as pre-season resumes.

Dr Long has had stints as the medical officer for St Kilda, Carlton and Brisbane since 2012.

He was also the match day doctor for Melbourne Rebels and medical officer for Gymnastics Australia.

Dr Brooks has experience with Geelong, working as its VFL doctor in 2018 after a four-year stint with the Western Bulldogs in the same role.

She worked with GWS as its doctor last year in the WA and Queensland hubs.

Former Fremantle physio Dr Jeff Boyle has also joined the medical team.

Dr Boyle was a foundation member of the Fremantle’s fitness and conditioning staff but informed the Dockers at the end of last season that he would be moving on after 26 years with the club.

I fully appreciate the change in the medicos. I posted on that matter a little earlier in the thread.

However, I don't believe for a nanosecond the changeover would have occurred without a team of sports medicos being on deck during training sessions. That wouldn't happen at most community football clubs let alone a professional one.

That has been explained, as has the SS/Danger scenario.
