I agree with much of your post, however it is incorrect to say that Melbourne clubs 'chose' to leave their original grounds. Yes Richmond did back in 1965 so I'm not including that. The AFL were largely behind the push to have all Melbourne clubs share just two grounds.

I can't believe I'm defending Collingwood here, but I remember them trying very hard to stay at Victoria Park. They were told in no uncertain terms by the AFL and the local council that there would be no funding available to develop the ground in any way. Many of these old suburban grounds were built in residential areas bordering main roads so there was no room to extend and build new grandstands, etc. Also local residents would oppose any redevelopment.

I'm not sure how Geelong were able to remain on their own ground as the AFL doesn't normally take no for an answer. They are extremely lucky to have been able to, not to mention the considerable funding made available for several stages of redevelopment. Good luck to them I suppose.

Yeah, it's a legacy of having a 12 team competition, where 11 of the teams are in very inner suburbs of Melbourne, so when the population boomed, room to expand disappeared. Carlton is one though where you would have thought there's plenty of room - it's surrounded by parklands. And the quirk of having one regional club off by itself.

Thanks Fred, as much as I love seeing us play at the G and all the extra folk in the stadium, Viccy Park was even more of a "Home Ground Advantage" to the Pies than GMHBA is for the Catters...so we'd be pretty much perennial finalists if we had our home games there.

AFL (and State and local governments) said NO. And they cashed in on us even more.

I'll bite! And apart from 1925 and apart from 1937 and apart from 1952, Collingwood hold a perfect 2-0 record in Grand Finals.

20th century, sure.

21st century and recent times (last 20 years) Geelong have a great record against Collingwood considering every game besides the Covid (neutral) seasons have been with a home ground disadvantage. Including a handful of finals at the G. I'm sure the AFL made Geelong win those games. In even more recent history, Geelong are 9-4 over the past 13 meetings. Again, with zero games at GMHBA.

40% of Geelong's VFL/AFL premiership tally have come from beating Collingwood on Grand Final day...

Richmonds successful school kid footy style made the game a joke. Honestly.
Can you explain to me how one teams game made all the other teams a joke?

I clearly remember Bruce in that 2017 GF when it was clear Richmond was going to win saying: "it's not just the victory, it's the quality of the football," and that's the way I seen Richmond's game also.

Why was West Coast a joke in 2018?

Our good friend Kane-o rated the Richmond 2017 GF side 24th of the 26 premiership teams this century just today.

Don't look at #1. :grinv1:

Richmonds successful style which is now the norm revolves around all the school kids running after the ball in a swarm all over the oval. Forwards dont stay in the forward line, defenders dont stay back. Hawthorns successful style not long prior was based on elite precision kicking and position, not booting the ball and chasing it. The game has evolved into the basketball/soccer thing we have today with ridiculous over umpiring and playing for frees much off the Tigers success (not all but alot).

2018 will be remembered as one of last few great battles that involved the quality kicking to marking style that was once a big part of our game.

Well done Tigers on your long yearned for success. People that have been around long enough are not going to remember it as the best footy they have seen though.

His rankings suck. It would be hard I know that much to do. But some of his picks were awful.

"They had 9 All Australians."

Then he lists them.

I am sure the likes of Matty Egan, Cameron Ling, Darren Milburn, Cam Mooney and Joel Corey struck fear into Kane Corne's heart on Grand Final day, but I doubt too many other Premiership teams this century would be trembling at the knees if they had to face them.

In fact 12 months later Cornes' 21st ranked team beat more or less the same Geelong team comfortably to make a complete nonsense of his rankings.

"They had 9 All Australians." 🤣

I couldn't believe how far back he had Hawthorn of 2008. That team was awesome and as you said beat Geelong a year later. A good Geelong team. No one got near the hawks when it mattered.

Except Sydney in 2012 who, you know, beat them on grand final day when it mattered the same as they did to us.

Geelong 2008 were better than Hawthorn 2012. Hawks beat a superior outfit. Comparing Hawthorn 2008 to hawthorn 2012 is ludicrous.

You're not taking any shine off Hawthorn's gloss.

Geelong 2007 beat a very average Port Adelaide team. Lost 7 home and away games would have been 8 if Geelong weren't missing players late on. Eagles lost by 3 points having Judd play on one leg at FF and cousins going off injured with a hami. A fully fit West Coast beat both Port and us. Eagles were missing more players yet still tied and lost in extra time. We got within 5 points of Geelong in a prelim after we finished outside the 4. Cousins cost West Coast a granny that season and an all time classic match up.

‘No one got near the Hawks when it mattered.’

I thought a grand final in a season where they finished first, with a percentage of 155, would be ‘when it mattered.’ I’m sure they were happy with the outcome, though.

I was referring to 2008.

Hawthorn 2008 clearly over 2012. Hawks 2008 beats Sydney 2012 too.

Good thing we came back and won two grand finals against two other sides that only lost two games each within the next four years to show that the 20 goal win wasn’t a fluke then. Phew.
