Covid year though. No games at the G in 2020. Hawks last time at the cattery just by guess is way back in 2007 or early 2000's. Even then I doubt it. I only recall games there in the late 1990's.

Hawks one is bogus.

Edited - the last time was back in 2006 before covid. You cheated excell.
Actually I have that wrong..
Hawks played Geelong in Geelong in 2024

I think it's cause Collingwood has bigger traditional rivals in Richmond, Essendon. and Carlton in particular.

As a result, this one will forever be overshadowed, when yeah, it really shouldn't be.

You resort to acting like a child when you're wrong. The evidence is there for everyone to see. You played Hawthorn there once since 2006. The 2020 game was due to covid. You played Carlton how many times since 1997?

Lol. You pull out false facts.

I've said this a few times, but I really think this is a legacy of the 1970s and early 1980s when for the first time we had good footy coverage on TV and in colour. Who were the teams contending or winning premierships? Those four (add Hawthorn) as well. If you take the first year of colour TV - 1975 - then go through the name change to the AFL in 1990, you had 15 seasons. Of which Richmond, Essendon, Carlton, and Hawthorn won 13 of those 15 flags. With Collingwood making plenty of Grand finals in the late 1970s through to 1980. It was drilled into you that they were the big clubs. All the club presidents, media figures now were kids then, so to them they're still the big teams. But on field they certainly aren't. Whether it's Grand finals, Prelim finals, or finals in general, Geelong v Collingwood leaves just about every other "rivalry" in the dust, both in the present and past.

Essendon and Carlton are both in the longest premiership droughts in their history. Richmond have always been "clumpy" with their flag eras, and did it again from 2017-2020. Collingwood managed to nab a flag in 2023, but even with that they've won a whopping 5 flags since World War 2 (Richmond, Essendon, and Carlton have won 8, 9, and 10 respectively. Hawthorn have won 13. Geelong have matched Collingwood with 5, and that included a 44 year drought).

But Collingwood get two guaranteed public holidays at the MCG every year, and a compliant media telling us how massive those games are (in reality they aren't at all). Perception makes a big difference.

There isn't really a Collingwood Geelong rivalry. Most clubs think they have a rivalry with us because its one of the few games they get each year that is sold out.

Right now Geelong is in a great era with a great coach, and its a pleasure to play them. Scott has a bit of a hold on us in finals, I'd like to change that, so it matters, but I don;t feel I want to see Geelong crushed or anything.

Our first true rivals were Fitzroy but they starved to death.

We hate Carlton. They are our great rival. They stole flags from us with rorts, and must pay.

At times we've had some strong feeling with Richmond and Melbourne.

Collingwood get begged to play these blockbusters. Geelong doesn't want to play us on the remaining three quarters of Kardinia Park, like all the smaller clubs they want their payday vs us.

Collingwood was included in the original VFL to pay the bills (despite Fitzroy's rabid and hate filled opposition). This has never changed.

We could have a "fairer" system, let us know which clubs will fold to pay for it.

I'd prefer to have a fair draw but it would be ugly to see more clubs folded.

All clubs have played games at GMHBA bar Collingwood this century.

I tend to agree that it's not a special rivalry
More circumstance in playing big finals over last 20 years than anything else

This rivalry, despite clearly being by many measures the biggest in VFL/AFL, doesn't get a big write up simply because it is all about footy. No lines in the sand, infamous beat ups or any real bad blood. I love playing the pies because the matches are big, not just in attendance but importance in the season. Hawthorn, I hate passionately, which is fun, Collingwood? I quite like them, because I see in them a true sparring partner.

Privilegewood.

Jock McHale would roll over in his grave to see the club acting so entitled.

You know what Old Jock would have really said?? o_Oo_Oo_O Probably something along the lines of "Why aren't we still playing at Victoria Park?"

But then the Tiggies have had the benefit of playing at the G since '65 eh?

Punt road got a bit small.....same happened to us eventually (though we did hang out for our old members for quite a while). My point is, Geelong can't play the "We're the small country town, away from the media and all the city tensions that you want to escape" to its recruits.....and then whinge when the poor old city dwellers (the AFL) make em play the big games on the biggest ground so that more of the public get to see the games.

They want the home ground advantage when everybody knows its largely that HGA that keeps em in finals (top 4) year after year. All the other big Melbourne clubs had to make the choice. Richmond did it early, Pies had the choice made for them, Hawks followed later when Waverley closed down and Carlton and Essendon have been busting a gut to get to the G for years now after enduring the boutique AFL indoor ground that everyone hates.

It's not the Pies that don't want to go to Kardinia Park (GMHBA...whatever) its the AFL marketing department, for the same exact reasons we NEVER get to play Gold Coast in Melbourne and very rarely Brisbane unless its a final. For 15 years we always played Sydney one game a year in Sydney. The marketers (TV broadcasters etc) all want sell out crowds in their televised games and Collingwood provides the bums on seats.

Privilege my @#$%.

And just so you know, I've lived on the surfcoast for 6 decades now and worked for well over a decade for the GFC so I'm not just pickin on the Catters!

Ditto well said sir.

You can live on the surf coast and be completely biased against the football club, which of course you are. Nothing wrong with that, but don't pretend to be objective.

It's 8 or 9 games at GMHBA that keep Geelong top 4 each year? I wonder what happens with the other 14. You can check the club's record away from GMHBA over the past few years. I'm sure it'll surprise you. They also finished top 4 in the pandemic seasons, where games or crowds in Geelong were limited/missing.

And do you share GMHBA with other AFL teams like Collingwood do the G?

No you get 8-9 real HOME games a year, not 8 and sometimes 10x 50:50 games a year against co tenants. Its hardly bias, it's mathematics. Even Geelong (players and staff) will tell you, they enjoy playing at the G, getting the big game experience and playing in front of huge crowds. This "Oh they never play us at GMHBA" is just Cats supporters moaning like we do about the Suns, Lions and Swans fixtures!

I really don't care whether Collingwood play there or not. You'll notice my post didn't reference that at all. I simply pointed out two of the more obvious errors your post made.

Check Geelong's record away from GMHBA the past 6 seasons and you'd notice it's that record which has been locking up top 4. Along with 9 finals won away from Geelong (2 in Brisbane, 1 in Adelaide, 1 in Perth and 5 in Melbourne).

Bar Brisbane 2020 win I wouldn't be counting away covid finals wins that great. It's a neutral for teams like us and GWS as well. That goes for anyone who plays at a neutral venue.
