Its easy for Handbaggers to point the finger at Hawthorn supporters who voted yes without putting the situation into proper context.

Those members were told in VERY explicit terms by the board that the club had no chance of survival if they did not accept the merger. Perhaps we can now look back and say the board was incompetent & not to be trusted with the benefit of hindsight, but back then supporters had little reason to suspect it. Many voted yes because they were tricked into thinking they would not have a football club to support if they did not.

In any case, the merger and the way the supporters along with Don Scott & Ian Dicker rallied to prevent it was the catalyst for everything the club has achieved since so I refuse to think of it purely in negative terms. It was a time of great adversity but we came out of it stronger.

In the 20 years after the historic up yours to the VFL the Hawks would go on to win almost half the number of Premierships Geelong have won in 120 years. What a club, the greatest of all.

Clarkso gets these ideas in his head and he sticks with them- i remember Zac Dawson got about 45 goals kicked on him in his first six matches as Clarko persisted with him as full back.
