Their media cheerleaders keep forgetting that they have players like Brown, Blair, Twovey, Maxwell, Johnson etc etc in their best 22.
Great point. It still s..ts me to tears that Blair ripped us up in our first match this year.

Glad the team did one for the comp, but can I add was so glad finals cards fell that we both avoided Carlton prelim and Hawks GF.

Pies gf finish flattered them. Had Blues won v West Coast would have offered far stifffer opposition (correct me if wrong but Blues finals record in Melbourne recent years is excellent) and like any fellow cats fans were praying for Pies to get over Hawks prelim as were the weaker opponent.

Cats fantastic and to me as a 40+ supporter given me more joy than could have imagined, but im first to admit things fell our way in September

Thanks, good luck to you and enjoy it all, it;s all about everything falling into place at the right time, but there is the element of making your own luck, you finished 2nd and beat the pies 3 times, would we have beaten you in a prelim...dunno about that

I'm lucky enough to remember our golden era in the early 70's ..

Predicting the Pies to slide significantly in 2012. I'm still amazed they effectively sacked a coach who finally got some results. Bizarre. Unlike other younger coaches, Buckley has never been an assistant at any other Club, and it's well known Malthouse assigned him menial duties (e.g. the Magnet Board), and left the serious game-day stuff to other assistant coaches. There's always been a bit of hostility between Malthouse and Buckley. Malthouse was never going to hang around. Buckley has taken the soft-option from day 1, by taking a huge salary at the Pies for doing little, and not doing an invaluable apprenticeship elsewhere .

The other problem at Pieland, is Mick didn't really leave the list in a great state. Jolly cost a lot and was recruited for a 1-2 year tilt at the flag before Mick left, and now his chronic knee problem is causing issues, and he's struggling to get on the park. Their other ruck was Leroy Brown, and he's retired. Didak's struggling. Leon is near retirement, and there's question marks about whether their captain deserves a spot in their starting 22. We also know there was huge conflict between Malthouse and Buckley on game day strategy. So now this unknown coach is going to try to come up with a game plan to counter the best teams in the comp. I just don't buy the pro-Collingwood media hype. There's lots of issues that are being glossed over, and their GF humiliation was a little snapshot into their future.

The thing to at Collingwood, it;s all been orchestrated by Eddie, like moves on a chess board, nothing seems to have happened naturally, he couldn't bear the thought of Buckley coaching anywhere else so he concocted this succession plan.

How Buckley goes next year will be interesting, Mick was a father figure to a few of those guys, has Buckley got a good rapport with the players?
Well let;s see how good Figjam is eh

I'm with parrot, they have problems

When you live in Geelong and hate them with a passion, it is hard to appreciate anything they have done.

That Grand Final was a big anticlimax for me.

Cheers, well done on the win. I'm pretty confident we would have put up a better fight than WCE did too, but there's no way we have beaten you guys. You guys are an experienced, finals hardened bunch who take their chances when it counts. I've got no doubt if you played the Hawks again you would flogged them too.

Always had a soft spot for the Cats and it was so sweet that you silenced the filth that is known as the Magpies. Enjoy

Agree with this completely and would like to add my two cents ....

Personally i think Eddie and Figjam cost the Filth a flag. It was obvious by the end of the year that this championship team (hate saying it but it was a championship team rather than a team of champions) had been split into two divisions, pro Figjam or pro MM. Last year and at the beginning of this season you could see the unity ... by the time MM went on the footy show the cracks were starting to appear. They were extremely lucky in all their finals matches, and if you really look closely played pretty badly the last 6 weeks. There was a lot of discipline issues towards the end and it was plain to see that figjam and MM were polar opposites.

Mark my words over the next three years they will self-destruct. MM got every ounce of talent out of the list ... I for one was always amazed at how good the filth were with what they had ... yes they had a few guns but there were many, many players who just surprised the **** out of me to be completely honest. That was all due to MM. You can say what you want about him but he really brought that team together.

Him leaving and the way he left will subconsciously ruin the group .... Figjam's style will not by any stretch of the imagination get anywhere near the same output from this group.

I am personally lovin it!

This seems to be the general consensus. Excluding the 7 goal lesson you handed out in Rd 21 last year, our recent form against the Cats has been as solid as anyones. Point is moot though, Geelong would have beaten anyone the way they were playing in the last month. Good on them for refusing to go down as just a great team and becoming legendary.

My relief that Collingwood didn't nab their 16th aside, what Geelong has done in recent years makes me excited for what our own potential may deliver in the coming years, assuming everyone concerned continues to work their arse off, of course.

Ps. Has anyone raised the hypothetical of who would win if this Cats team at its peak went at the Lions of a decade ago at their peak? I have no idea who would win, two teams that just never give/gave up. Would be football at its absolute best.

Dane Swan, Brownlow Medalist?

And we thought Shane Woewoedin was a bad call.

Another 20 meaningless cheap possessions. Outplayed yet again. Gutless, insipid. Worst Brownlow of all time.

Loved every second of it. His next hard earned possession will be his first. :thumbsu:

Still amazed at how Swan won the Brownlow. I didn't have him in my top-10. The umps obviously felt the heat after Eddies dummy spit last year. He probably even polled votes while he was in Arizona. He has about 10% of Judds talent if that. Ball and BackPeddles are more effective midfielders than Swan who can really butcher the football like we saw in the GF.

You can add Mr Unaccountable Leon Davis as well. First bounce he was 20 metres off Varcoe, and bang, goal to Geelong in the first 15 seconds. Two minutes later same deal.

Barely laid a tackle, spent the day racking up cheapies.

Stats don't mean jack in a GF, when you can't keep your opponent off the scoring sheet.

Yet another AA flubber.

What about '93 when Wanganeen beat Diesel by one (? from memory) vote, despite Diesel getting no votes for 40+ possession game? - when possessions had to be earned btw!!!

I know this is in the Geelong thread but he was initially recruited by the cats.... Thanks Geelong (via Sydney).

Can we trade old man 5 for old man Jimmy?
I have put this in the SSB (old memory bank ;))

Sheez, I would swap teams and just lap it up :D

ps Thanks Betchoice for the $4 Geelong after the home and away

Favourite stat:

Dane Swan - 20 possessions, 3 tackles

Leon Davis - 20 possessions, 11 tackles

How that foul, tattooed, bogan hack won the Brownlow is beyond me.

Always thought Pies would blow it this year, back to back is so hard to do. But did not pick Geelong as the team to bring them undone. Very happy that Pies lost and Cats won the flag that officially certifies their status as an all time great team.

Love that Geelong invented and persisted with a style of footy that was not only good to watch, but also killed first the Swans clogfest and then its bastard child the Saints strangleathon. Thank God.
