CATS NAB POTTER

The Cat's have selected young midfielder Nick Potter in an absolute steal with their final pick in the Top-Up draft. The Cat's are said to be absolutely delighted with Potter, a hard working centreman. Potter has terrific leadership skills and is a hard worker who uses the ball smartly. Originally from Pennant Hills in NSW, Potter was awarded with U-18 All-Australian honours last season, joining the likes of Adam Cooney, Kane Tenace, Ryley Dunn, Andrew Walker, and Colin Sylvia as selections in the team. During the U-18 Championships, he was co-captain of the NSW/ACT team. He had three very good games for NSW/ACT – who finihsed unbeaten champions in division two. He has good ball-winning ability and is a renowned hard running player. The All-Australian youngster is considered a steal at so late in the draft, and the Cat's would sure be happy about that.

Meanwhile, the Geelong Football Club has released a projected squad of 28 for the opening round clash with the Saints. Notable unlucky players to miss out after solid pre-seasons include Charlie Gardiner, Adam Bentick (Rookie listed), Tom Lonergan, Daniel Pratt, and Josh Willoughby.

KOUTA INJURES HAMSTRING

Geelong has been rocked by the news that superstar Anthony Koutoufides has been hit yet again by an injury. Koutoufides, who has reportedly injured a hamstring, will miss the opening few rounds of the season. This blow came just as news of skipper Steven King's positive rehabilition from a achilles surgery. Koutoufides is expected to be back by round 4 and as of such, will not be placed on the GFC's long term injury list.

Geelong has undergone changes to its list during the Mid-Season Trade Period, adding the likes of Luke Power, Luke Hodge, James Bartel, Steven Salopek, Graham Polak, Andrew Mackie, Ryley Dunn, Andrew Walker, and Llane Spaanderman and Xavier Clarke (both of whom were subsequently on-traded in deals). The Cat's are said to be delighted with results although they lost some loyal past players, including the likes of Darren Milburn, James Walker, Paul Chapman, Scott Camporeale, Scott West, Anthony Koutoufides and Jess Sinclair.

The clubs trades have signalled a new era in the club, with the older generation of stars making way for the new breed. The Cat's have recognised this and with Vice-Captain and All-Australian midfielder Scott West leaving the club, Brenton Sanderson has been handed the Vice-Captaincy role, with Rohan Smith and new pick-up, the ever classy Luke Power, been given the leadership role of Deputy-Vice Captains.

The Cat's were especially pleased with the nabbing of Power, whom the coaching staff rate very highy. His ability to kick a bag of goals whilst accumulating a high number of disposals will certainly prove handy for the Cat's, who sit 5th on the ladder and are striving for a finals birth.

The club announced it would hold a press conference at Skilled Stadium at the official conclusion of the trade period to present the new players with their guernsies.

The Geelong Football Club welcomes it's newest father-son pick, Nathan Ablett, to the club.

The club will give up it's 3rd round pick, number 46 overall to get Ablett.

Press Release

Earlier today, GFC CEO Mr.GC slammed the AFL over its handling of recent national draft picks.

"With the National Draft approaching, we as a club came rather prepared, safe in the knowledge with which picks we'd have."

After coming in with knowledge that it held picks 37, 41, and 54, Mr.GC said he was 'flabbergasted' as to how the AFL has operated in switching certain picks around.

"It's absolute rubbish. Utter crap to tell you the truth. How on earth the AFL can simply 'strip' clubs of picks in this manner is astounding really. We planned and based our club delistings on those picks we had, and this has really thrown our plans off the rails so to speak."

It is unknown at this stage as to what the club will do in the wake of such a scandal.

Geelong has completed its National Draft, picking up the compulsary total of 3 youngsters. After trading away it's early picks, the Cats utilised their late round picks on forward flanker Stephen Owen, winger Nick Batchelor, and flanker/utility Ryan Gamble.

Club officials insist the club is ecstatic with first pick Owen's availability at 48, expecting him to be long gone come the Cats first pick. Geelong drafting guru, Stephen Wells, was pleased to walk away with another potential steal:

"We were expecting him to be gone, and were instead holding out for (Nick) Malceski to fall down. With Malceski off the board though, there was no way we were letting a player like Stephen fall past our pick. He's got very good skills, especially around the goals. His goal sense is uncanny, there were a few games this year where he just plucked them out from nowhere. He's a special talent, no doubt. We really see alot of Steve Johnson in him."

12 picks later, Geelong picked up speedy winger Nick Batchelor. Already garnering a reputation for his stunning resemblence to Cameron Ling, Batchelor is expected to figure in senior selection for the Cats 2006 campaign.

"He's very, very quick across the ground. Still needs to build up, but he could be a very handy player for the club down the track. Second efforts are..well, second to none really. He really gives us that injection of pace."

With its final pick, and following the news that the club had released youngster Alex Gilmour from it's list, the Cats plucked up Ryan Gamble from SA, where the versatile flanker played for Glenelg during 2005. With his handy versatility, coupled with his tidy disposal skills and big leap, Gamble could prove to be well worth the punt down the track.

[Press Release 1]

With salary cap issues abroad, Geelong have been forced to overturn their list in a busy off-season. The club farewelled the likes of Brian Harris, Tom Lonergan, Matthew Spencer, and Josh Willoughby while rookie listed players Nick Batchelor, Tim Sheringham, and Will Slade were not offered new contracts.

Disgruntled superstar and 2x Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes was one of many former Cats to find a new home during the frantic trade period, alongside the likes of Robert Murphy, James Kelly, Steve Johnson, Adam Selwood, Josh Hunt, Andrew Walker, Adam Bentick, Shannon Byrnes, Andrew Carrazzo, Dom Cassisi, and David Trotter. The club wishes all players the best for the future.

Geelong has entered the pre-season with as many as 17 new faces from the 2006 squad, among them star midfielder Luke Ball, 2006 Rising Star winner Andrew Raines, and top ranked draft trio Tom Hawkins, Scott Gumbleton, and Joel Selwood, all recruited to the club during a busy off-season.

With several star players defecting to other clubs, among them 2006 Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes, the Cats entered the hyped up National Draft with 11 selections, striking gold with Hawkins, Gumbleton, and Selwood early on, before topping off with a plethora of bigmen and runners late in the draft.

Prior the that engagement, the Cats found themselves one of the busiest clubs during the hectic trade period, securing the likes of Ball, Raines, Brent Prismall, Jesse W.Smith, Shaun Higgins, and Todd Grima.

With a healthy mix of rising and established stars, the club is expected to feature heavily in premiership talk during the upcoming season.

After a disappointing early finish to their 2007 campaign, Geelong are expected to oversee some major shuffles to their playing list.

Rumoured disgruntled players include superstar forward Matthew Pavlich, who has apparently agreed with the club to part ways during the off-season trade period --
