Geelong will never merge. there are so many other clubs that would need to before the cats. There are more options for the dogs other than Geelong.

LIke i said before the Dogs are a huge underachiever in the membership stakes. Especially since Fitzroy is gone they should have consoilidated the Western Suburbs market

I didn't know Fitzroy ever had a huge following in the western suburb?

I can see the OP's logic but this merger will never happen. With all due respect the Bulldogs are doing a fine job recruiting new members, they have the whole western Melbourne region to themselves so I cannot see them fold. Clubs like the Kangaroos and Melbourne are more at risk of extinction than the Dogs.

Geelong will always be Geelong to me, and the day the club dies is the day I will give up AFL football for good.

Fitzroy ain't in the west. It's right near Carlton and Collingwood, north, maybe a little bit north-east.

We know that in the long term there are too many teams based in Victoria

Teams will be relocated interstate or merge as it is the only way that they will survive. This will be due to the corporate dollar and membership restrictions.

Looking at the crystal ball I would not be surprised if Geelong merged with the Bulldogs. This team would represent Victoria in the Western region and ensure survival of both teams in the long term

They could play their home games in Geelong and there blockbusters at the MCG. Will this occur down the track?
If it happens the new team will be called the Geelong Cats - business as usual!!

I think what SriLankanCat maybe on about here is that Fitzroy played out their last year or maybe two at Whitten oval, which is clearly in the Western Suburbs of Footscray.

However Fitzroy was just well and truly on the very quick track to bankruptcy by then, rejected by their inner city suburb and couldn't consolidate in a suburb (Western side of Melb), that already has a team.

No way in the world that Geelong need to merge.

We can slowly become a superpower. We just need to ensrue that our stadium is kept up to date wiht mroe capacity.

We have a huge region and market to oursleves, there is no need to merge with anyone.

I hate to see teams merge but if anyone has to merge surely the demons, roos, dogs and even Hawks will be up there well before Geelong. St Kilda arent too flash either compared to Geelong.

Maybe the Demons and Roos can merge and be called the Melbourne Kangaroos. The Western Bulldogs i reckon are a huge underachiever when it comes to fan base. They have the entire western suburbs to themselves. There membership base is gradually getting better thoguh.

In a nutshell i would never vote for a geelong merger

Dont see it as a merger - it would be more like Geelong swallowing up the Doggies! I like the sound of it and think it's a great the idea - besides, I can't see WB doing anything significant in the next 15-20 years so why not combine with another team in the west? It's only a matter of time before AD thinks of it too..;)

It better bloody well not.

We're in a prime position to strengthen our place in the league. As a one-team town we have a considerable advantage - not to mention that we basically represent the entire western districts of Victoria.
Not gonna happen.
I lived in the Western District for 18 years and you never represented me thank you very much!!!!!

Geographically we do, though - much like Hawthorn has a somewhat-claim to the southeastern suburbs of Melbourne.

I may be wrong but anecdotally it seems that Geelong has very strong support in places like Warrnambool and Colac.

Yeah I know. Just havin a laugh. Lived in Colac for 8 of those years (thankfully no more!) and I was well aware of the Cat factor. Strangely though in all those years we were zoned to Fitzroy. When the zoning finished you got Austin McCrabbe and then the Hawks got him when you were finished. In Austins defence he was a great bloke and a good Hampden League player!

As I said lets look down the track
Iff the league has its way there will be a much greater spread of teams interstate. That being the case we expand the number of teams which is unlikely, or reduce the existing teams.
Should Western Bulldogs be one of those teams under preassure what are their options?
What long term advantage is there to our club?
Clubs finances will go through fazes depending on their administration and onfield success. We can feel smug now and for the near to medium term but the pendulum swings.
