Roast Geelong can't develop young players

You should probably name them and give examples as to why they are exciting and will prevent you from bottoming out.

The majority of AFL fans see it differently.
You forgetting about Simpson, Dempsey and Mullen?
They've looked good at AFL level.

Do you idiots realise how pathetic it looks that a team who - at this stage - has not had a losing season in nearly two decades, is suddenly being smashed for missing its second finals series in 17 seasons?

Like is this seriously the biggest thing we’ve done to deserve criticism 😂😂😂

In a comp in which 7 teams have won a combined 6 premierships over roughly 310 campaigns, the thing we’ve done to get s**t thrown at us is to ‘win 4 flags in 17 seasons and miss the finals twice.’

😂

Nah we’ve really got a lot to be ashamed of

We have probably turned a list over 4-5 times since 2007... So why would anyone from geelong think it cant be done and done sooner rather than later??

There is nothing different this time around.

Will depend over the next 2-4 years on how good we drafr trade and go after FA’s.

In terms of youth right now, clark is very highly rated internally. Holmes SDK bruhn knevitt conway all rated. Not easy for 2x 20yos to carry a midfield against seasoned mids but bruhn holmes did ok given their age. Probably both two years away from hitting straps.

Plenty of exciting youth coming through and we'll add more in the draft, trade and free agency period.

It might be more the interest in what is Geelong’s next strategy, as they do not develop their own players instead trading for everyone else’s. Oldest list to win a premiership, the hunger is gone, and the injuries have mounted up, plus your draft hand is poor, first round pick which will probably get used on a trade and a 5th round pick.

What do you think they will do. Reasonable question, no need to be abusive.

Except Dogs_r_barking we don’t. We’ve developed plenty of players.

Melbourne’s flag team contained half a dozen players shipped in from elsewhere, Richmond had a handful, so did ours.

While none of our ‘superstars’ recently have been locally developed youth unless you go back to Hawkins and Selwood 15 years ago, we have had no problem bringing our own players through who have played important roles in our success. Whether we can develop one who can become that ‘franchise’ player? Who knows. We haven’t tried for a while.

That's some quality copium, you haven't tried? Yep i'm sure its by design Geelong have been forced to trade in talent.

When you are up the top, you don’t get high draft picks. Not sure if you’re familiar with how the equalisation of the competition works but it’s reasonably well known.

So when you are high up the ladder you have two ways to try and stay there - something that hinges on having elite players.
One of those options is to draft young players. To do so, you need to either have those high picks I alluded to earlier and thus get first choice of the next draft group, or hope that literally everyone else f**ks theirs up. The first strategy involves being shithouse - which we haven’t been - and the second involves 15-16 other teams failing. Which is unlikely.

The second option is to bring in ready made players who are already elite or about to be. Which we have done very successfully.
Hawthorn tried with Tyrone Vickery but it didn’t quite work.

I didn’t need to quote a f**kwit internet buzzword like ‘copium’ to make that post. All I had to do was make a very brief observation about the two methods by which all 18 teams try to compete each year.

Enjoy your evening

Were you saying similar this time in 2015 regarding Dangerfield not making us a contender again?
I doubt Parish is coming home anyway.

Dangerfield at the time was the best player in the competition, and you had ‘peak’ Hawkins, Selwood, Duncan, Taylor and more ….

Parish will be handy if he moves, but he’s not Dangerfield circa 2016.

I mean.. Geelong won the flag in 2022 so it was by design, and it worked.

Yes because young talent doesn't exist outside of the first 10 picks, Holmes and SDK is proof of that. Geelong haven't been able to produce their own
talent, now you can make all the excuses in the world for that but it wont change the reality of Geelongs situation.

So in one paragraph you’ve cited how we can’t produce our own talent by citing two good young talented players we’ve produced.

Well constructed and certainly beyond the reach of anyone around here. Wonderfully done.

Just let them have their fun. We got we wanted (a flag to cap off the Selwood era) last year, BigFooty got what it wanted this year (Geelong disaster season). Everybody should be somewhat satisfied.

So you're suggesting you can't do both, it was by design Geelong have no young talent?
Looks like you've quoted the wrong person, either that or your reading comprehension needs a little work

Fyfe was the best player in the competition in 2015 and Dangerfield only became the best player in the competition after coming to us.
Selwood was at his peak in 2016 as was Dangerfield, but none of our other players were.

Hawkins was not at his peak back then, nowhere near it. Very good player yes but not the player he would become from 2019 onwards.
Duncan was just a solid foot soldier back then, as was Guthrie.
Taylor peaked in 2013 and was on the way down by 2016, he arguably retired a year or two later than he should have.
Lonergan, Bartel, Enright and Mackie were all past their peaks and near the end of their careers.

There's a reason why our side had nicknames like "two man band" and "Dangerwood" and it's because Dangerfield and Selwood were so good at their peaks while the rest of the side was average, that it was good enough to drag us into the top 4 and a preliminary final.

Yeah Guthrie only arrived as a gun midfielder in 2020 after Kelly left.
It was a year earlier for Duncan who only consistently fired in finals from 2019 onwards.

Blicavs, Kolo, Menegola, Stanley and Bews got a lot better after 2016.
Motlop was decent here and there. McCarthy underachieved with us.
Hawkins didn't become post-broken back titan until 2018.

Then it was a handful of oldies, of which only Enright remained top class, without the blend of youth (like 2022) to compliment them. Lonergan, Taylor, Mackie and Henderson as a group were too slow.
And a bunch of pretty average talent in Z.Smith, Caddy, Cowan, S.Selwood etc.

Our 2016 squad was worse than our 2023 one. We just had two champions in their prime carrying us.

When the can kicking leads to a premiership it's hard to get too worked up. We'll probably clock this whole rebuild thing that other clubs seem to get stuck in a loop forever too.

You'd take it every single day of the week.

It's why I'm not upset about us trying to top up for the 4peat.

Strike while the iron is hot.

There are consequences though.

Who cares what players Geelong can or can’t develop? Last years, premiership team was a team which had turned over an entire list, minus 2 players from 2007. Who cares whether we develop players, I’ll bring them in. Do you get extra points f or either?

And, I find it hard to believe that we haven’t developed a single young player in that entire list turnover. The collective IQ of some people in here must be about 10.

Holmes, De Koning, Bruhn and Henry are all 23 and under - and are all key players in our side.
Dempsey, Knevitt, Clark, Conway and Neale are all looking the goods as well.

Not sure why people would question our ability to draft and develop our own youth.
Holmes, De Koning and Henry yes. but dempsey, Knevitt, Bruhn , clark, Conway and Neale all completely unproven. bruhn has shown a tad but nothing elite.
I think because Geelong haven't had to rebuild because they've been a force for so long that their fans actually don't know what elite juniors are. As a dees fan, we had many promising juniors that played promising footy for a season or two only to fizzle out of the system.
