Autopsy Geelong defeated by GWS by 4 points - Rd 4, 2019

Simply put, GWS brought a level of play in the second half well above what Geelong has seen thus far this year, more akin to a top 4 side and closer to how finals are played, and it exposed that not enough improvement has been made in personnel or play style for this side to compete at that level. The speed, the intensity, the structure, the skill. Geelong just looked like they weren't even in the same league after half time. Beating Collingwood in round 1 and then beating a couple of bottom 8 sides has perhaps cultivated the perception that more improvement has been made than is reality.
You’re up and about!

Very familiar feel about this one. Players start to get ahead of themselves and believe what is being written up about them.

Played well in first quarter and then thought we would romp it in. Our pressure then dropped thinking that someone else would do it an they could get the reward of easy stats which allowed the Giants to get their game going which we then couldn't stop.

Giants played out of their skin to win that. You feel that we had a number of players that had off days like Sel and Danger.

Based on early 2019 and late 2018 form, and given his age and history, I would say Selwood is close to finished.

A point of difference between the two sides today was that GWS had players who could win the ball and then use it well going forward. Geelong has a lot of players who can win it and then burn it constantly with poor disposal. Dangerfield is an unfortunate example of this. Great contested ball player, but his usage is at times deplorable and detrimental to team efforts.

Pathetic. Chance to put space between us at the top and we blow it with THE EXACT SAME garbage from last season.

The deliveries inside 50 were garbage. Instead of eyes down and hitting a target it was repeated bombs to their free player. Main guilty suspects were Kelly and Selwood.

Mids were unaccountable. Too much left to too few. Would want to see a few asses kicked and dropped to the VFL. Henry might do well with a spell because he hasn't been too flash this season. Will be interesting to see who steps up in the VFL to make a claim.

The problems we saw in 2018, 2017, 2016, were on show today, the type of footy that has seen us embarrassed in finals.

Midfield was poor today. As much as he’s been a champion of our club Selwood isn’t helping us much, last season.

Henry has gone backwards, Constable well down, Danger well held, Menegola putrid, Duncan pretty much invisible, Kelly well held in the second half. Poor kicking under little pressure let us down all day. Hard to rate the forwards as the midfield was too crap to get it to them. Defence was mainly good, but a few brain fades, poor positioning and poor match ups took the shine off them.

3-1 is a great start, but that was a really winnable game lost to poor skills and execution.

Why do you follow Geelong? Serious question because you're nothing but negative. You're never here when we win but start gloating when we lose.

I'm worried about you Sir.

Failed to capitalise when we dominated early. Menegola misses a shot in the 3rd that he'd gobble up 9/10 times and we go from potentially 4 goals up to scores level in a matter of minutes. Once we were back to level pegging we just seemed panicked, bombing in hope forward and allowing Haynes to repel us every time. Forward pressure was down a bit too - the chases were still there but felt like less tackles were sticking.

At least SavRat improved upon recent performances.

One thing we need to work on is kick-ins. Sick of Stewart kicking to the pocket, hemming us in and allowing the opposition to set up. He's literally allowed to run and bomb it from the same exact place he passes to most of the time. I'd rather have the kick go straight to the flank as opposed to giving the opposition the added time to get men there.

Bitterly disappointed in the result but I woulda taken 3-1 in a heartbeat when I saw the fixture a the start of the year.

Enjoy your win, Biggy! Tough first month but you can finally give the club a kicking!

Dangerfield
Selwood
Kelly

Hard for us to win when all three of them stink it up.

Amazing we only lost that by 4 points. That was a really poor performance. Menegola, Constable and Kelly the main culprits. Got absolutely smashed in midfield.

Well played Clark. That is about it for positives.

The umpiring was suspect, calling kicks back when there was advantage, getting in the way of the Geelong play 3 times

First three weeks we were able to stop teams from running the ball through the midfield and killed them on the rebound. Today the Giants were able to run it through the midfield with no pressure whatsoever and were able to spot up targets.

Hope we learn from this for Easter Monday, as Smith, Scully, O'Meara and co. will look to do the same on the wide open spaces of the 'G.

Terrible effort after quarter time.
Zero pressure around the ball, zero pressure outside the contest and on their runners, zero desperation late to try to win.
Lazy and insipid effort for the majority of the game and team.
They had the top 5 ball winners, the top 3 clearance winners and if you care about it, the top 6 rated players on the ground.
We started behind and refused to run, we gave up the lead and never looked interested in winning the game, we gave up space that shouldn't be there and we allowed them to play their own game.
Not many winners out there, even those who did play well had moments late that completely ruined it.
I don't mind a drop in pressure or form, you expect that with a young/new team, but what I found most frustrating was when the game was to be won late not one player looked urgent enough to create an opportunity.
Our last few kick outs were slow, short and wide, our talls further forward showed zero intensity to create an option and when the ball hit the ground our smalls followed their opponents by several metres.
Even their last few scores when we had it in our forward 50 and it got rebounded out, we had our midfield jog along sometimes behind the ball while GWS players ran hard to create options and space and were largely left alone, at no stage did any of our midfield put in the effort to man those options up or to fill any holes, at no stage did they run hard defensively.
When the ball did get to ground in our forward 50 we allowed them to get numbers to the contest and stroll the ball out at their leisure. Last 3 weeks we got numbers to the fall of the ball and ensured at worst a contest and ball up, today we stood back, stood still and watched the ball go over our heads time and time again.
The fact we only lost by 4 points, or 25 points in the second half, is funnily enough the biggest positive of today...

Would think that those playing VFL have a chance to seriously push for selection next - how will the MC respond because we could easily see 3 or 4 changes after that sort of performance.

Good test for the MC come Thursday night?

Na, we're not Hawthorn.
I thought it was and it was taking away my chance you guys had of pinching back the lead. Was a cracker game and that decision just nullified what could have been a classic ending at the end. I really like Jordan Clark he has that look in his eye, gonna be a very good player.

Probably not the worst reality check to get today. Smashed in the middle, and also well beaten on the transition out of defence.

That said, a lot of what happened today couldn't have gone any worse. Kelly and Dangerfield played their worst games for a long time, while Miers, Constable and Clark all looked tired.

The issue with having three forwards who don't get much of the ball (Rohan, Atkins, SavRat) who don't get much of the footy was exposed today - that without superb direct delivery out of the middle, we're in trouble.

Great game of footy. Hard to criticize us too much. Hope we keep the same team.
Mummy too good in the end. Was too hard to win clearances.
We tottally lost our nerve with our structure too. Left everything up to Rohan outnumbered against good GWS talls.
Rohan was superb BTW.

22 pts up menegola runs in 10 meters out straight in front and delivered that s**t, I honestly could have kick that
agree, they are clutch moments, that we then regret

chook and atkins need to be rotated, myers looks very good and getting better, same too clark
we need to put bews, tuohy into that defence

the mids well well, wtf, anyone who defends selwoods game needs their head read
