geelong lack depth

Would this be the ruckman who is 4th in the league for total hitouts? Blake isn't setting the world on fire but he's a lot better than most second ruckmen in the competition.

Hawkins is hardly bad, and we've got Scotty Simpson coming up through the ressies.

The fact that we've won 7 on the trot without Ottens is HUGE, never mind that we've beaten St Kilda, Brisbane and Pavlich without the services of Egan.

Rubbish OP .... great call on the dockers/pavlich ... going forward i will also refer to that other team in the west as Pavlich in respect to the great main and in disdain of the disgraceful club!!!

Hawkins is one of the worst FFs in the leaugue. hasnt kicked over two goals in a game.

johns >> hawkins

he kicked five against the dees and 3 against st.kilda and he doesnt play ff at all times. if you actually watched a game he plays as a lead up chf he takes most of his marks outside 50. he also avergaes 6 marks per game which is alrite for a 19 year old chf.

2008

Round 4: 3 goals
Round 3: 5 goals

2007

Round 6: 4 goals
Round 3: 4 goals
Round 2: 3 goals

Add to that that he's a CHF and not a FF and we come to the conclusion that you are in fact a cumknuckle. :thumbsu:

against decent opposition he goes missing

worrying

So he's like the Essendon Football Club.
Oh wait, they go missing against any opposition.

Even the Velvet Sledgehammer is now just a pathetic AFL football. Is he trying to get traded to Freo ?
Lucky he's captain and Essendon have a couple of injuries or he'd travelling to Bendigo each week.

looking at geelongs list and seriously if they get a few injuries they are nearly gone. without Ottens they have nearly the worst ruck stocks in the league. Take out Mooney and they've got no decent key forwards.

Hawthorn will probably annihilate them

I've said this all year..if Cats don't have their ABC's (Ablett, Bartel, Corey) they're in trouble, BUT if just one "Buddy" goes down, Hawks are done, simple.:)

geelong have the best depth in the comp easily.People are forgetting that taylor and gamble are not in our best 22  that is scary they would get a game at any other club and be very good players

list of players outside geelongs best 22

taylor
gamble
prismal
byrens
mumford
west
varcoe
lonegran
simpson
D.johnson (its scary that this bloke isnt in our top 30)
davenport
dejukar

Seriously, where people get it wrong is that Depth isnt about who is in reserve...although it does help.

Depth is about the depth of your top 22, and the ability to keep your core players on the field and the ability not to rely on individuals too heavily.

If you compare Geelong to any other club, their top 10 players are all close to AA over the last 2 years.

Compare that to other teams, the depth in the top 22 is nowhere near as strong.

Lose Ablett, and you still have Bartel, Chapman, Johnson, Selwood, Corey and Enright. You bring in Prismall, and he still has it easy because of the calibre around him.

Lose Mooney, Geelong are able to compensate through hard running and midfield goals through chains of handballs. Mooney doesnt have to have a good day.

Compare that to my team Collingwood, lose Rocca and the structure falls down.

Geelong can afford to lose 1 or 2 or 3 frontliners, because there are another 3+ guys in the top 22 who can lift. In Ablett's absense, James Kelly became a frontline midfielder and had one of his best career games last week.

If Saints lose Hayes and Montagna, i cant see them covering as well as if Geelong lost Bartel and Ablett.

Not because Prismall and Varcoe are in reserve, but becaues Kelly and Mackie will step up and take on more important roles. Shane Birs and Raph Clarke wont. Also, Saints will struggle to make do without Riewoldt because Gherig and Kosi are not CHF's and the Saints rely so heavily on forwards kicking goals.

I think every sides top 22 is really really hard to pick. I even struggle to fit everyone into Melbournes top 22. But what becomes evident and definitive is the depth in a sides best team and the ability to vary their gameplan to fit different structures if players are missing.

Geelong's best team is not only the most even...but it is also very young and its players have 7+ years left in all of them as a minimum. I wouldnt be too concerned as a Cats supporter

Its true, happened to the Dees as well. If no teams suffered injury this year I expect the top 4 would look something like:

Essendon
Melbourne
Hawthorn
Adelaide

Was that a joke? God I hope so.

Geelong have been very lucky with injuries but they also have depth.

But if you get injuries to too many players (see Adelaide last 2 seasons) it doesn't matter your done.

lol Melbourne

Mate you have the worst list in the competition. It dosen't matter how many injuries you may have had. Melbourne....:D:D:D

The exact same theory applies for every single team in the AFL.

But I suppose you forgot about that... clearly suffering from a bad case of tall poppy syndrome mustard.

If anything Geelong are doing a great job managing their depth stocks.

Ottens is out and we've been able to get experience into West and Mumford, whilst Blake developing even more with greater responsibility. We also have a 200cm and 100kg athletic monster in waiting named Dawson Simpson.

Egan's out and we've been able to introduce Harry Taylor into a our vaunted defensive scheme. Currently showing maturity beyond his years.

And all this while we continue to win.

We've got Djekurra, Varcoe, Tenace, Lonergan, Prismall, in stock all very talented young guys who if they played for anyone else would have 50 games under their belt.

Geelong's depth is actually very good in comparision. Turn the blinkers off mustard.

in all honesty geelongs depth is amazing.I will say it again taylor, gamble and prismal are not in our best side that is scary.

Look at taylor he would the number 1 defender at many clubs
prismal and gamble would be walk up starts in any other club.
Go down the list to david johnson who isnt in out top 30 and even he would get a game in over half the teams in the afl.
Simpson is a future champion as is hawkins
blake is our 2nd ruckman and he has had the 4th higest amount of hit outs in the league
