I'm sure he'll get better too. He's learning a specific craft (if he's allowed to stick at it). But even during he first quarter the commentators were highlighting and pumping up the duel between him and Oliver. It got quieter and quieter as the game wore on.

He'll develop more, but when you have 10 touches and your opponent has 34 you have to face reality.
I think he could be good at it too. Really good.
But I don't know why you'd bother when we have as many good mids as we do.
The only other team that uses a tagger every single week is GWS. And they struggle TBH.
All that midfield talent and they've got a bit of a hack at every bounce and ball up just wasting a spot.
Dusty in finals is the only player worth hard tagging IMO.

Our list isn't that good? 2x Coleman medallists, 1x Brownlow medallist, 8x All Australians, 5x premiership players.

How many of them are in the same form now as when they won those awards? Past performance not being a future indicator and all that.....

I used to be in the anti Scott camp but I think it is pretty clear now that Scott is just red lining the * out of this list through good coaching (overall, yes yes dumb coaching moves incoming no doubt) and the players are either past their best or not that good to begin with as the system is designed to cover up their flaws (hello misfits).

I am amazed to see Oliver's stats to be honest after watching the game again focussing on the stoppages. Seems like blatant stat padding to me as most of his disposals around stoppages seemed to be fumbles or tap ons. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that Oliver had a turkey around the stoppages, and only really did anything decent with the ball when he was well away from them.

But I challenge you to find five occassions where O'Connor was beaten by Oliver when he was directly manning him.

If you can do that I will concede he got the better of him. If you can find ten times Oliver beat O'Connor when he was directly manning him, I will concede that he blew him away.

I reckon that's the endgame goal and the home and away rounds are just experience for him.
If we win the flag we gotta beat Richmond at some point and Dusty was the difference between a flag and runners up so makes sense to have a design already in place.

Agreed - Oliver didn’t impact on the game too much for mine. Petracca, Langdon did the damage.

Who was on Langdon? He had a mountain of space all game and we never looked like getting anyone near him.

Plan B may well have involved Ratugolea - currently on the comeback from injury
Plan C is the guys like Rohan, & Evans who is said to be a strong mark for his size, and was playing out of the goal square - one's currently suspended and the other injured
Plan D is to throw Dangerfield forward as we did against Adelaide - also currently suspended

So not sure it's so much no Plan B, but rather an uncertainty when the first preference alternatives are also unavailable and then not using someone like Jenkins or Fort who are available

Yep easy to see the positives in the returnees, doesn't mean we can't rue the loss of four achievable points. Lost at the selection table for not including a big specialist forward (not Henry) and other debatable inclusions/ team balance. Plus they all decided to play like sheet on the same day.

I saw this at the game and thought I must be missing something cause I couldn't understand what Stanley was doing, but rewatching the replay it still doesn't make much sense:

What's he doing pointing at the goal there??? Lay a shepherd on the two men running at Smith or at least present a passing option for him, increadibly poor effort IMO. Lucky that Smith was good enough to kick it, but still, I hope that gets reviewed.

lol, Simpson and Ratugolea are still trying to secure their spot in the best 22.
Simpson is showing great signs but he's 15 games into his career. Hardly an instant senior player.
Ratugolea will likely want out at seasons end. Why stick around when you are not wanted as this coach prefers pea hearts like Stanley and Blicavs over you in the ruck instead?
Rohan is a complete dud of the highest order. The worst big game player in the clubs history. Jelly legs and has no angry bone in his body (except when he has the opportunity to whack blokes 5ft'7 tall or shorter).
Narkle will give us just as much forward output as what Rohan will going forward.

Dangerfield and Cameron are the only two big inclusions for us.
Get them back and we may look a lot better but with this coach and his persistence to play as many defenders in a team as possible, we aren't getting near the likes of Richmond, Bulldogs or Port Adelaide and I highly doubt we even beat Sydney and St Kilda in the next month. They are quick and play frenetically. Geelong are the 2014 Fremantle Dockers of the competition.

couldn’t get to the end of this I just clicked the laugh button after the first couple of lines. Reminds me we also have Higgins out of our best 22. So that’s potentially 7 players who are best 22 missing out of a 22 man side.

huge changes to be made. Almost a brand new football side playing. 6-7 changes to a selected best 22 generally occurs roughly after 2 years of off seasons, not within the same year.

Stanley’s footy IQ is extremely low. He’s purely see ball get ball and even then he can struggle with execution. I say this as someone who is willing to defend him over the journey.

Once he saw Smith had it he was happy for Smith to take responsibility. Smith, who has a footy brain, tried to draw the defender and Stanley would have walked into an open goal.

Lucky to get out of it with the goal.

As soon as Smith started to hook around and run to the boundary I looked away, thought we bottled another chance. Cracking finish nonetheless.

And you can quite clearly see Smith looking at his options and seeing if there's a teammate to pass too, including Stanley before he realises that he's going to have to go alone

There's the odd criticism leveled at Miers for avoiding body contact, but you see in that passage where he gave the handball to Smith and his next move was to put on a shepherd for Smith - in turn the got hit high, a free kick was awarded & Smith was smart enough to take the advantage

Four big changes in Cameron, Dangerfield, Rohan, and Parffit added over the next week or two. That should change the side a fair bit. North Melbourne is a get right game before tougher tasks in West Coast, Richmond, and Sydney. Sydney are going to fade IMO, it's a matter of when. Round 7 is probably a bit early though.

Stanley doesn't want the opportunity to kick an important goal, would rather be a passenger. Same thing when he has to make a contest on the wing with the ball coming out of defence - would rather be pushed under the flight and throw his arms up in the air then actually make an attempt on the ball. Athletically he should be dominant but he is the softest player I've ever seen. Probably the dumbest too. Apparently Fort doesn't get a go regardless of how terrible Stanley is so our only hope is that Sav can do a job in a few weeks.

That's the issue with hard tagging - your player is one hundred percent focussed on stopping a player who usually has four others around him who can win it as well, so there is a lot of wasted effort and opportunity.

In the previous two weeks O’Connor got more of the ball than his opponent which was part of its success. But 34-10 yesterday was a pantsing.

We deserved at least bloody one in there. It wasn't like a 100 point shellacking

My re-watching seemed to show barely any of those 34 touches came from when O'Connor was tagging him. I am pretty confident that O'Connor got as many touches as Oliver while standing with him.

I simply could not see where those 34 touches came from either, unless they counted the numerous fumbles and scoops that happened while O'Connor had him wrapped up at the bottom of the pack. There were maybe four occasions where Oliver genuinely beat him on replay.

To my eyes, O'Connor was sitting on him at ball ups and throw ins, but spreading away as soon as the ball cleared. Oliver got a few touches against the likes of Atkins, Narkle and Duncan but I really do think O'Connor kept him largely ineffective when he was on him.

So for me, after pretty close observation, I would not say he pantsed him at all.
