AFL Club
Geelong
2-1 after a tough fixture in March.
Win on Easter Monday and it sets the club up nicely for a tilt at another top 4 finish, which would be the 16th top 4 finish since 2007.

Where do people see the club in terms of premiership aspirations this year?
Will definitely be in the mix for the premiership imo, and it'll be a bonus to get Dangerfield and Stengle back in the side and playing A grade footy.
The young guns still have lots of upside, too.

Coming into the season, I thought Geelong were due for a down year as they had a hard draw and an aging list. However, I have done the AFL predictor three times, and all three times I have Geelong making the top 4 and winning it.

No chance :)

Beating Adelaide without some of their best players at Kardinia means very little. Tough fixture? Please.

Last year Geelong would've missed top 4 had it not been for Dangerfield singlehandedly winning multiple close games.
Without Jeremy Cameron they would've missed the 8.

Not healthy to be so heavily reliant on a 36 year old and a 33 year old. Definitely won't stack up in the back end of the year.

It's actually pretty telling that they can only scrap by 8 points at home against a midfield of Sam Berry, Jake Soligo, James Peatling, and Izak Rankine having only 7 touches.

For all of Bailey Smith's possessions, he was clearly outclassed by Rachele in terms of damage per disposal.

They've got problems, and until proven otherwise, they will rightly be ranked below GC, Brisbane, Dogs, and possibly Sydney, Hawthorn and Fremantle.

They have more MCG familiarity over any other true contender (Lions, Swans, Dogs, Suns, Crows, Dockers) but imo one of the QLD sides will knock them out in the prelim or GF.

2022 they were the best side in the comp by far and got the flag. Most other years they are top 4 and lose out in finals to a hungrier side.

Wont even finish in the top 10. A non factor in season 2026. They'll still lose against Carlton, and even the bottom of the ladder Essendon will get their first and only win of the season against them.
don't know about that
what with the helping hand they receive by the umpires when playing at home.
It's a rather handy advantage.

9 more frees against Freo
12 more against Adelaide

Just doesn't pass the pub test unfortunately, and why oh why do they only play non-Vic clubs at this accursed ground. Just grateful we get them at Gather Round this year

Because interstate teams = lower attendance = don't need the MCG.

I wish they would think that through a little better though. The problem is if you're only playing crap teams and/or crap poor interstate teams (with the exception of GWS and Brisbane that's every year at Geelong now), you're not getting a big opposition crowd coming, and whether it's contentment or not, we're not getting it packed out by home fans either.

Weather last night plus being a Thursday didn't help but looked like far more empty seats than normal.

That's why they usually finish higher than they deserve and end up getting reamed in the finals

They live in the top 4. They can win the flag. Bruhn Worpel add much needed midfield depth, Tom Stewart is fit again, Holmes and Bailey Smith have the running power so many teams wish they had, they're dangerous for sure. Mannaugh, Miers, Dempsey, Stengle, Close, Wiltshire (Look good last night) hard running smart high half forward / wingers, cracking team. Danger will be managed to fire at the right time. Looking the goods so far.

Having said that, plenty of good sides in 2026.

Last year we rode our luck and then it rode us in the last half of the last game.

I don't see us doing it this year but, as usual, we'll go in underrated and - despite having one of the best away records in the league (oftentimes the best alongside Collingwood), people will continue to b!tch about our home ground advantage.

If it all goes right, sure we can win it. I would have loved to have seen the last half of the GF without broken arms, broken ribs, a concussion and perjury getting in the way.

Bulldogs seem to have it humming along; Brisbane have insane depth that, if it were us, would generate some great conspiracies ...

Stats actually don't bear that out. If you wanna talk about teams that rely on playing at home to make finals, talk about Hawthorn and Richmond. Since 2016 ... and tell me you're not surprised:

It'll be interesting.

1st ruck is a bit weak but we're otherwise pretty well balanced. More depth than normal but maybe our top end talent is fading a bit (Stewart, Dangerfield, Cameron).

No I'm not surprised, Geelong win lots and lots of games because they get regular ump-assisted softies against travel-weary opponents at their funny D-shaped ground to recuperate

But when the finals come they usually get found out pretty brutally

To be honest nowadays I think it generates insecurity and paranoia.

Who had broken ribs from the Grand final? Even allowing for Stewart and Bruhn (presuming that's "concussion and perjury"), that's only two players and every side has injuries. Brisbane were missing Berry, Payne, Hipwood, and Answerth. That's at least as significant and they too lost a player during the game - pretty vital too considering he was Dangerfield's direct opponent.

We'll make finals, nothing surer - the wheels would have to totally fall off to stop it. We're not going to lose at home to North, Sydney, St.Kilda, Essendon or Richmond (all to come), and they'd you wouldn't bet against us beating the Dogs, Brisbane or Gold Coast at Geelong either. Pick up other wins along the way. Ultimately we won't know until September.

Just remind us - what were the games other than the PF where Dangerfield singlehandedly won it for Geelong?

I don’t think anyone committed perjury in the GF last year, did they?

Unless Bailey Smith swore an oath before the game that he wouldn’t pull out of any contests?

Oh I wasn't saying we had the best list; Brisbane did and their win was heroic given their circumstances.

I'll even buy the line that they were hampered by a virus in the QF.

I was just saying our luck ran out. We had great luck and then it turned when we needed it. No sour grapes here.

edit: I meant bruised ribs (Danger). And we can add losing our first choice CHB for the whole season, too. Things were tough both ways.
