Geelong rorting the system

I think Geelong probably do offer opportunities outside of football to really good players. But what club doesn't?

There's x amount of players who want to live in Melbourne and X amount who do not. There are a lot of players who want to live in Victoria because most AFL players come from Victoria. Geelong are the only club outside of Melbourne in Victoria so there's a good list of players who want to be there.

Their list management is really good. Look at the really good sides. Collingwood being the other. When good players go out, they bring good players in. Collingwood will go bang when Pendlebury and Sidebottom go. Geelong will go bang when Dangerfield goes. These clubs have enourmous pulling power, they will line up a gun at another club and just get them. Selwood out, Smith in. This is the epitomy of how they operate.

The AFL has tried to design a system where if you bottom out you can rebound quickly. Thing is that system us an utter failure. 1, the amount of players required to rebuild a bottom side does not equal the amount of picks they get, particularly when you factor in how long it takes for these players to get to AFL maturity. 2, the draft is not an exact science, players are drafted too young so clubs really do not know what they are getting, regardless of where the players are drafted. 3, full rebuilds take 7+ years, in that time players have been ruined by playing at a poor club in a poor side or have left. The list goes on. 4, free agency gives top sides access to the better talent and pushes good players to leave weaker clubs.

The AFL system is well and truely broken and rather than supporting bottom sides more, it supports the better sides.

The top sides have found if you don't bottom out, you attract more players, club culture remains strong, your club remains a destination club, you can pretty much go out and get whoever you want as long as you can afford them so a team like Geelong will use the retirement of a gun player and/or they will move a few on and use that to open the cap up, use free agency in some capacity and keep the top end talent strong.

Cats draft well, they have a strong pull and because of where the club is situated they have an advantage over a lot of other clubs.

I really do not think Geelong are breaking the rules. I would not be suprised if it is found they are, however there are too many factors working in their favour and I think they are using that to their full advantage.

You can add their reputation to that as well. 10 grand final appearances since 1989 and four wins and that figure could change soon. I would say they have been the most successful team in the game since 1989. a 12 year gap was the longest grand final gap they had in that time, then it was an 8 year gap, they have been always in it in my memory. Collingwood are probably the next best, they operate very similarly to Geelong. Then it's probably Sydney, Hawthorn, West Coast and so on.

Trick is not to bottom out for too long. Use free agency, draft well, have no fear about players ages, manage the list really well and use the fact you are Victoria and not Melbourne to your advantage.

New Geelong rort puff piece just dropped.

Uncut gems: How Cats built empire from rookies, rejects and draft leftovers

As Geelong prepares for a remarkable 14th preliminary final in 19 years, the club's sensational record of developing players from a variety of backgrounds – polishing uncut gems and turning them into multi-million dollar talents – has been put on full display once again.

Geelong's qualifying final side from a fortnight ago, the one that comfortably dispatched the reigning premier Brisbane, featured 14 players plucked from football obscurity. Among them were six rookies, three players recruited after the 40th pick in the draft, two delisted free agents, two Irishmen and another collected off the scrapheap at the Trade Period.

It's an unconventional list build, but one that has become the envy of the competition over the best part of two decades. It's also the product of one of the League's most highly respected, sought-after and universally admired development bosses in Lappin.

Apparently one of the audits into Geelong is about to be handed down by the AFL.

Follow the money.

Can’t wait for Dill to land the blow that will be a dagger in the height of “nEuTraLs”

Systematic cheats.

Come to Geelong - get paid a ****ing shitload by Morris Finance, Cotton On and regional farmers that will willingly hand over acres.

Whole club needs to be audited.

I bet Danger didn’t pay a cent for his Moggs Creek mansion either.

Wow if someone with a time machine came to me in the mid 90s and said “in 30 years time carlton supporters will be calling Geelong cheats” I would not have believed it yet here we are.

I thought hawthorn was better than these other clubs, they always had that “we are the best” bravado, but now after one loss in a prelim you are back with the rest, beautiful to see how far you lot have fallen.

I think this is why Geelong players and staff are starting to have bust ups with the media. A few media must be doing some investigate journalism and getting close to the truth.

The net is closing in.

Yes photographing smith with his pants down is getting close to the truth.

And if geelong was doing something wrong it would have nothing to do with smith as he doesnt manage the salary cap. Neither does scott. So dont know how it would cause them to boil over given they would have no more knowledge then you or I.

But sure, keep making up your ridiculous tin foil fantasies to help you sleep better with geelongs superiority compared with your own club.

How have we have fallen ?

We are are on the rise again, i feel a 3 peat coming baby

I bet they send this shit to prospective players to show them how great the “perks” are of playing for this corrupt franchise.

Tough gig for you since declaring you weren't watching Geelong early last year as 'only paying attention to the contenders' ay? While Carlton fell in a heap and are shite again. What a shame.
