When you look at the numbers though, and where players were rated, we aren't much different to some other teams.

Plus one thing many people overlook (not saying you are, but just some people in general) is that if we don't pick those F/Ss we still get a pick, and I believe we've had 11 F/Ss, the equal most with the Pies, so if we are looking at F/S picks in isolation, you have to look at it from the other direction too, and other teams had those 11 picks outside F/Ss whereas we missed out, and there's a fair chance we'd have picked something good in those 11 picks too I imagine.

From 1999 on....
Brisbane - Jonathan Brown
Carlton - Jarrad Waite, Dylan Buckley
Collingwood - Rhyce Shaw, Heath Shaw, Travis Cloke
Essendon - Jobe Watson, Joe Daniher
Freo - Brett Peake
Geelong - Gary Ablett, Tom Hawkins, Mark Blake
Hawthorn - Josh Kennedy
Melbourne - Jack Viney
Port - Brett Ebert
Sydney - Sean Dempster
Bulldogs - Ayce Cordy, Mitch Wallis, Tom Liberaore

Brisbane could have had Marc Murphy as well, if they'd been able to sell a shift to Qld to him successfully.

I think something else often gets lost when considering our two 'failed' drafts. Firstly and this might be hard to believe, of the eleven first round choices taken after Tenace, only four have had undoubtedly better AFL careers than Tenace (and one of those is Raph Clarke) and the other seven, in my opinion, all had worse careers. The players taken after Tenace in the first round were Clarke, David Trotter, Rylie Dunn, Beau Waters, Ryan Murphy, Brent Stanton, Fergus Watts, Troy Chaplin, Josh Willoughby, Billy Morrison and the immortal Llane Spaanderman. The players taken immediately before him? Cooney, Walker, Sylvia, Ray, McLean and Bradley. The 2003 draft was an absolute shambles, to the degree that if they did the first round picks over again, Tenace would only drop from seventh to eleventh, out of eighteen.

Secondly, Mitch Brown's career has been unquestionably stalled by his injury issues. He still has a chance to be a quality AFL player, but if he doesn't make great inroads this year, it's not going to happen at Geelong.

i've got a problem with the methodology of this since every team has a similar amount of games available to give to players, with finals the only exception

not that i'm arguing with the outcome.

was shocked though that our picks from 21-40 and 41-60 had us only middle of the road as we all know this is where wells does his best work.
