Review Geelong tries its best to lose and finds a way to stagger to a 4 point win over Demons

he wasn't too bad

17 touches, 5 marks, couple clearances

hopefully this is just the start of him getting better
It was far from his best game, but he looked more settled than last week

Probably enough to retain his spot for next week, and hopefully we see him take another step up

The decision making and skills of this team has been and still is the issue. We give 110% and try so hard but guys like Blitz, Danger, Atkins, Bews, Guthrie, Henry, Dahl, Parfitt, Kolo and Sav just aren’t either great kicks and or make really bad decisions under pressure. We need to get guys like Clark in that can use the footy. It’s notable how good we look when Ablett, Selwood, Duncan, Rohan, Hawkins or Stewart have the ball. Literally go back and look or watch coming up. We don’t score if the above players aren’t involved in the lead up chain.

Crap game, but a win’s better than a loss any day. Great game by Guthrie, always very glad to see after some of the crap he gets on here.

Atkins (inj), Stewart (inj) and Steven (crap) to make way for Narkle, Clarke and anyone else next week.

We’ll win well against the Suns next week and everyone will be asking ‘where was this for the last 2 weeks’. Just the Geelong roller-coaster script. Then we’ll get pumped the next week. Rinse, repeat.

Atkins was good against the Hawks
13 disposals (5 kicks/8 handballs) & 2 goals?

I would say he was serviceable, and did well in terms of getting on the end of others hard work

Outside of those couple of goals he's been pretty disappointing this season

Clarko has cursed us the twit.

We looked the goods against the dawks and have promptly turned into an old mouldy sandwich.

Scott decided, as he did last year, that playing flee flowing, attacking footy that results in a good win is not the right recipe for us. He’s a genius.

And so around and around we go.

More of the same next week, with the hope of a different result.

I do keep saying it, and the MC keep backing that up.
Only a certain amount of times it can be reiterated they aren't as good.

If that means we're an average team, well I know that already.

Seems Clark has been training with the defensive unit - hard to know though where they see him long term

So they want to change his mindset as an attacking player to one like tbat of a defender??

Figures. You can't have players willy nilly running straight lines and driving the ball forward can you? That might move the ball too quickly.

Two things can be true at once:

Thing 1: The brand of footy we played today was dire, unattractive, and won't stand up in finals.

Thing 2: Today was a tactical win for Chris Scott. He set up to negate Melbourne and it worked. Someone in the matchday thread said "we have no way to defend against quick plays", which made me laugh, because if anything defending against quick plays is the one and only thing we're doing at a high level at the moment. Our whole game plan today was built around it. I'm not saying I like that of course.

Anyway, something needs to change because we ain't a good team at the moment.
Kudos on a nuanced opinion on BigFooty. And I agree.

I thought today there was a clear plan - which demonstrably worked - to control the ball and the pace of movement.

It is also possible to say that:

1. The plan worked (ie. we won)

And

2. The balance between slow and go was out of whack and we will need to do much much better than that to be anything in the finals (indeed to make the finals).

There’s no way the coaches would be happy with the style today. They will want us to be taking more risks at the right time. We also failed with that last kick inside 50 far too often, which undid all of the good work bringing the ball forward. Heaps to work on.

Not the first young player Scott will have ruined by playing him out of his natural position.
