Would be awesome to get him and Ling as VFL players, and then grab them in the MSD if we haven't selected anyone yet/they show they're up to it.

Been my pick for a while, given all the other Falcons we drafted. Surprised we grabbed young Ollie over him, but hopefully can get both of them in the end anyway

Lots of injuries i think..like thurlow etc for us his body never really gave him a chance. If he has a good year he might get a rookie spot somewhere in 12 months

Its a logical thing for us as our vfl side will be light on for kpds but it sounds like a few clubs want him and hes yet to decide on us. But if we can get him it would be great and if he does well might be an MSD chance if we get any injuries to talls.

True and i agree on all counts. He essentially fills Langs spot (who has gone back to colac) on a hbf/wing. We still need to sign a key defender for the vfl list though.

Unfortunately for the Cats, Oscar Morrison has opted towards joining Port Melbourne for 2022 after interest from a few clubs.

I dont blame him...a standalone club probably helps him get more games than an aligned club. Hope he does get drafted next year.

There must be some underlying talent. Whether his body is too frail or can not make the transition.. .. he has a chance.
 

2022 Pre-Season Update - Geelong Cats​

There has been some experience that has left the Geelong Cats VFL program over the off-season and it will see them have a much more inexperienced side in 2022. The club will look to have another successful season after finishing in the top four in the incomplete 2021 season and will try to build on their seven-win season with their only losses being at the hands of the Casey Demons and Footscray Bulldogs.

Competition Updates​

The Victorian Football League will return for the 2022 season on March the 26th and will continue to align closely with the Australian Football League Men's season for a 22 round season with each team taking 4 byes each. The Aspley Hornets are the only team to confirm their exit from the eastern coast competition with the remaining 21 clubs beginning to strengthen their sides for another run.

The salary cap has been increased by $20,000 for standalone teams to $220,000 while AFL and AFL-aligned clubs have received just a $10,000 boost to $110,000. The caps also introduce the ability to pay $10,000 of a playing coach's salary outside the cap while indigenous coaches implement a $5,000 concession.

The list size rules also remain pretty much identical to the 2021 rules with AFL affiliate clubs having a maximum of 30 players (15 development players, 15 primary listed players) while stand-alone clubs can have a total of 40 players on their lists (28 primary listed players, 12 development players).

Outgoing Players​

Multi-year captain for the Geelong Cats and former AFL listed player, Aaron Black, called time on his VFL career after the 2021 season failed to return and will join Darcy Lang, who has decided to return home in a playing coaching role, and promising youngster Nicholas Burke (Port Melbourne) in big outs for the Geelong based side.

Black was ever so reliable for Geelong's defensive unit in 2021 but his impact came through his leadership and years of AFL experience with 57 senior games behind him and now over 100 VFL games, similarly, Lang's 64 senior games of experience for Geelong and Carlton will be missing in the new season but he was able to make a huge impact with ball in hand averaging 20 disposals over eight games and included a five-goal tally and 26 disposals in round 12 against Essendon.

Jackson Thurlow could also join the list of big out’s, in what would be shattering to the Cats, as conversations are held with Launceston Football Club in the TSL. There has been no confirmation from Launceston if they have been successful and no confirmation from Geelong on his exit as of yet.

Luke Smith has been another exit as he looks for a new home along with James Gow (St Josephs), and Callum Mitchell (St Josephs).

Smith showed exciting talent in a practice match against the Australian under 18s side in early 2021 as he claimed best on ground honours while Callum Mitchell managed just one game and James Gow managed five.

Geelong’s second tier in the AFL has been almost totally refreshed as they lost reserves regulars Oscar Brownless, Jordan Clark, Charlie Constable, Darcy Fort, Ben Jarvis, Josh Jenkins, Nathan Kreuger, Stefan Okunbor, and Cameron Taheny. The Geelong Cats have lost the core of their senior side of the VFL program including the top three players in the 2021 Best and Fairest.

Darcy Fort won the best and fairest but will move to Brisbane in the hope of more opportunity after averaging 19 disposals and 22 hit outs while showing a strong forward and marking presence across eight games.

Following Fort in the best and fairest was runner-up Oscar Brownless. Brownless, who has been delisted, was available for all eight VFL games 2021 games which included a 32 disposal game in Brisbane in Round 11, and in third place was Charlie Constable.

Constable heads up the Gold Coast Suns after struggling for game time in Geelong's senior team but was a ball magnet in the reserves side with an average of 31.8 disposals over eight games and included two 40+ disposal games.

Josh Jenkins and Ben Jarvis were enormous in the forward line as the seasons leading goalkickers with 24 goals and 16 goals, respectively. Jenkins kicked bags of six and seven goals to beat up on stand-alone clubs throughout the season.

After an exciting 2021 season for small forward Jack Mentha, he has decided to move west and find a new home at the Cattery alongside Charlie Byrne (Essendon VFL), and Kade Chalcraft (Murray Bushrangers). Chalcraft will join his brother Jye on the list with both looking to have positive impacts at the VFL level.

Jack Mentha was a reliable force down forward for the Frankston Dolphins, kicking 15 goals over 10 games, and will hope to continue his form at a Kardinia Park alongside Matthew Ling.

Ling was delisted by Sydney’s AFL side at the end of the 2021 season and he has confirmed that he will be part of Geelong VFL’s push in 2022 while he tries to revive his AFL career. He did play seven games at VFL level for Sydney while he was not required by the AFL squad where he averaged 16 disposals running up and down the wing.

Benjamin Lloyd (Bell Park) won a club best and fairest and will join the Geelong Cats VFL squad alongside expected returns of fellow clubmen Benjamin Worme and Isaac Wareham. Jesse Travaglini (Southport) will also return to the fourth place finishers after a year in Queensland where he played just one game.

Great summary. Weve obviously lost some quality experience and i will be interested to see how we set up the defence in particular we will be very inexperienced there if thurlow doesnt stay so we might need to move the roles of some other players around and find a tall back in particular. Ling can obviously fill thurlows HB role but we are short for defensive talls without black. I like chalcraft as an inclusion i think hes been stiff not to be drafted and hes a great get and mentha has real potential. I would expect a few more signings as we have spots left in the top 30 obviously.

Yes, seems like the defensive unit will be Geelong VFL's problem especially since it looks like the new AFL players are all midfielders/forwards. I hope Thurlow sticks around in the competition but Oliver Tate and Trent McMullan looked strong back there in 2021. Sam De Koning played back there too and looks like he could be the only AFL listed player in the backline (pending AFL selection)

Oath, Intra clubs do not develop the AFL's young guns. They need real competition and hopefully we can hit those 18 games in 2022.

Just note that AFL only released the NAB League girls fixture a week prior to the season starting and we are about 2 weeks away from the VFLW season they still have not released a fixture to the public but as Paul Amy says the clubs do have fixtures. I still would expect at least another month before a public release depending on the COVID situation
 
I've watched VFL matches since getting my WatchAFL token, and in a lot of ways I find VFL (and AFLW) even more entertaining than senior AFL.

Probably for the same reasons I enjoy minor league baseball more than MLB; it's just fun to watch when not so polished.

I’m excited about this Jack Mentha bloke.

He will be a handy inclusion. Kicking 15 goals from 10 games for Frankston in 2021, his side club is St Joseph’s in the GFL but the word is he won’t get much action there.
