Geelong 10 . 5 . 65 v Box Hill Hawks 15 . 12 . 102

Dunno who the best players were, just got that score from the VFL site!

Well Done Boys!!

The magnificent , classy , gutsy Box Hill Hawks took another step towards the VFL flag today...and did it in true Brown & Gold style.

The day started with the ressies having a ten goal win over the previously undefeated Werribee ( who also gave us a nice old touch up at their ground about 6 weeks ago). This very young side has come ahead in leaps and bounds of late and are starting to really look the goods. This win puts us firmly in third place with 2 games in hand over 2nd place Willy and one in hand over top side Werribee. Well done guys.

Then followed the 'big boys'.What a performance ! Geelong came out throwing everything at us. The Mooney brothers , Rahilly , Woolnough , Wocjinski , Corrigan and friends hit our kids hard ( and not always fairly) in an attempt to knock us off our game....yeah , dream on guys !!! Our blokes were fantastic...they weathered the storm and went in to the first break 4 goals up. With the exception of the 3rd qtr , when Geelong decided to man up all over the ground and continued to belt our guys around , we extended our lead at each break to run out winners by 6 goals.

The down side to the day was a couple of nasty injuries , a couple of which may keep guys out for a few weeks. Mark Passador was decked in the first qtr and came off the ground in la-la land. He went back on but I dont reckon he was totally with it. Robbie Campbell suffered a nasty corked Knee also in the first few minutes and took no further part in the game. Early in the 2nd qtr , Vanders went down with an ankle and also sat out the rest of the game and Micky Osborne was poleaxed in the last qtr and finished the game with a very tender jaw. Willo had some back soreness after the game and Riesy was totally exhausted after 4 very hard running qtrs.

All up , perhaps costly , but a really hard working , classy win by the boys.

Box Hill 15 12. (102)
Geelong 10 5. ( 65)

Goals : Pugsley 3 , Osborne 3 , Piccioane 2 , Hazell 2 , Greene 2 , Williams , Ries , Mitchell.

Best : Cox , Hazell , Baird , Goergiadis , Greene , Dent

Hawthorn Guys :

Willo - good running game off HBF and wing. Continues to improve his footy nous each week.

Minna (Piccioane) - good solid game without starring. Did heaps of running , mainly on a wing and cramped in the end. Good effort.

Nuts Hazell - fantastic game at FF/FP. He hit the packs so hard and could have kicked 5 but for a couple of near misses.

Riesy - top game , running hard all day and layed several hard tackles.

Vander - burnt in the first qtr in midfield before doing an ankle and sitting out the rest of the game.

Loater - didn't play. Will miss 3 weeks after having minor knee surgery last week.

Stevie Greene - Top game. Is getting roughed up each week and coping better every time. Really maturing as a footballer.

Obba - another great game by the boy. Started really well across HF and went back later to stiffen the backline. Must be very close.

Coxy - yet another BOG performance by the boy at FB/BP. Took a couple of lovely marks , punched when he needed to , ran ran ran and used the ball pretty well again. One other thing I noticed was his 'presence'. When Box Hill blokes went down Coxy was in there flying the flag (without going ga-ga) and had a couple of the Geelong guys looking over their shoulders. Great stuff Coxy !

Chicken -Granted he may struggle to get back in at Hawthorn for a while but he's just the consumate professional. Played a real general's role in Defence.

Tucky - did well in midfield and up forward. Plenty of strength and run and loves a bit of a dip when he can.

Robbie Campbell - copped a nasty corky early and sat out the game. He was pretty sore after the game and may be doubtful for next week.

Micky Osborne - another great effort by the 'ball magnet'. Had a ton of footy and kicked 3 lovely goals. Came back on after being heavily decked...plenty of ticker.

Matty Ball - came off the bench in the 3rd qtr and played really well in defence. Very tight and used it well.

BHH guys :

Mark Passador...battled on well after very heavy knock early.
Matty Brewer....another typical hard at it game , must have had a dozen effective tackles.
Tyson Collins...good in and under game in the midfield , sharing duties with Sammy Mitchell who was equally as good.
Andy Pugsley...great up forward with 3 goals then went back in the last qtr with Obba.
Mick Georgiadis....fantastic performance , rucked all day against bigger opponents when Cambo went down. Probably his best game for the club.
Matty Banks... good solid game in defence.Needed the run.
Johnny Baird....excellent game at CHB. Marked well all day and provided plenty of run.

By the way , Matty Brewer and Johnny Baird have been rewarded with selection in the VFL state side too play SA...well done guys.

Next week...all you footy starved Hawks get out to Box Hill to support the boys against Murray Kangaroos on Sunday at 2.00pm with the ressies taking on Springvale at 11.15am. The club has a week off the following week.

Go all Hawks

-Rico
