The Warriors and the Cats share one thing in common, and that's that they hold the record for the most dominant home and away/regular season in league history, coupled with the fact they failed to go on and win the championship/premiership in that season.

wow never even thought about that comparison.

Lol dominance.
Do well in Home and Away season generally but have choked in finals last 8 years pretty much.
Haven't had any real success since Steven Dank left the club.

Stupid, stupid OP. Geelong haven't won a flag in years. Since that flag, hawthorn have won 3, there's been a heap of fairytale type thingoes and WC have played in two GFs, winning one. It's an extremely even competition.

Geelong are looking good but it's round 10 ffs. Remember when the roos started 9-0 a few years back? They're a long way from a flag yet- even a top 4 finish is far from guaranteed. To suggest they're at a level similar to GSW is.. well it's not the stupidest thing I've ever heard but it probably wins the weekly trophy.

JeanLucGoddard said based ON a city/town, not based IN a city/town. He is quite right. Hence my example of Juventus, which is based in Turin but not named after a city, town or even any location at all.

He also said "franchises". You can't really just pick a European soccer team up and move them to another city. There would be riots.

nah.....

according to wikipedia, these are relocation of teams in Italy:

Current Italian football laws allow relocation of clubs only between bordering cities. Some examples of current football clubs born as relocation of previous ones include:

  • In 2003, after Cosenza Calcio 1914 was not admitted to Serie B, a new ownership bought sports rights from then-Serie D club Castrovillari in order to permit a Cosenza franchise to play football in the upcoming season. The new club however proved to be short-lived, as it declared bankruptcy in 2007, but was promptly replaced by Fortitudo Cosenza, born as relocation of neighbouring Serie D club Rende Calcio.
  • Serie D's Neapolis, located in Naples, was born as a relocation of Sangiuseppese, a club hailing from the neighbouring city of San Giuseppe Vesuviano.
  • In 1994, one year after the cancellation of Calcio Catania, Atletico Leonzio's chairman Franco Proto relocated his club, renaming it Atletico Catania. The club, previously located in Lentini, went on to play up to Serie C1 (the league now known as Lega Pro Prima Divisione), losing promotion to Serie B on playoffs twice before being cancelled in 2001 because of financial difficulties also related to Calcio Catania's return into professional football and the consequent drop in attendance.
  • A.C.D. Città di Vittoria, born in 2007 as merger of Serie D's Comiso with minor league club Junior Vittoria (possibly a trick in order to allow the club to legally relocate from Comiso to Vittoria).
  • A.S.D. Pol. Libertas Acate of Serie D are a club officially settled in Acate, which however actually plays their home matches in Modica and are recognized by both fans and the regional press as Modica's club, being frequently referred to as Libertas Acate-Modica. In fact, after a takeover bid in 2006 the club left Acate to play their home matches in Modica despite the fact they were not eligible to change the "legal" home city.
  • S.S. Racing Club Roma was founded in summer 2013, after that A.S.D. Real T.B.M. Zagarolo transferred the seat and its sports title of Eccellenza to the city of Frascati, becoming A.S.D. Lupa Castelli Romani.
  • Lupa Frascati in the season 2013–14 the club moved to Axa district of Rome[42] changing its name to A.S.D. Lupa Roma, and playing the home matches in nearby Stadio Pietro Desideri of Fiumicino.[42] In the next season it was promoted to Lega Pro as Group G champions, changing its name again to Lupa Roma F.C. as a sign of return to the professional ranks after a 34-season absence. The team had to also move its home in Aprilia due to the Fiumicino field being unfit for professional league games, and the immediate lack of an available venue in Rome.[citation needed] In 2016–17 season the club moved to Stadio Olindo Galli of Tivoli. The legal address of the club also moved to the same municipality of Greater Rome.[43]

The UK has the following:

Oh wow, you had to delve into Wikipedia and find some pub team nobody has ever heard of. The point is that any club of any decent size wouldn't get moved in Europe or they'd risk riots. Or maybe Arsenal will get moved to the Scottish moors tomorrow.

manchester united, arsenal, west ham are not decent size?

It's 2019, not 1920.

Try one of significance (not a 4th/5th division nothing club) that has happened during our lifetimes.

you guys really have short memories. Forgotten Wimbledon already?

'80s much? Hardly a big club at the time of dissolution and revival.

If that's your big one to cling to from the past century, it's a weak argument/claim/copy pasta didn't read/whatever you're trying to do.

2000's

Bolton, West ham plus others have also.moved towns in the last 20 years

The op said relocation never happens in Europe and there would be riots if it did. That's wrong. It's not common, but it happens

"Golden State" and "West Coast" are two of the few world franchises not based on a actual city or town.

Given though that GS play out of the most technological advanced progressive urban area on Earth, with an economy based on knowledge and education, and West Coast play out of Perth, it is where the similarities stop.

In terms of the name, yeah. I presume West Coast was so named to kind of represent WA in general, as Perth is the only major city in the western half, let alone third, of Australia.

The NBA also has Utah and Minnesota, state names. Oh and the New Jersey Nets if they're still around.

This is an...odd...thread. GSW would actually be better compared to Hawthorn, than Geelong. Geelong has had a longer winning streak/more games won, but Hawthorn has won more flags. Also, GSW is a more recently dominant side. You could use the Celtics or the Lakers as a probably more apt comparison, than GSW.

We've been good this year, but haven't really 'dominated' the comp (along with St Kilda, Sydney Hawthorn and Collingwood) since 2013.

AFL equalisation is working fine. We only have 7 first round draft picks on our list, so it's not like we're getting 1st rounders on the cheap and somehow rorting the system. We just have a lot of state league talent, rookies, late draft picks that have been successful. Again, Hawthorn is probably a better example here (not looking to start a sh*t fight so relax Hawks supporters), with their attainment year on year of former 1st round draft picks that are now established players (that's their model). They could still yet make finals, with players like Scully, Wingard, O'Meara, Mitchell, all being A graders that have 'topped up' their list.

If you look at the unpredictability of games this season, I'd say that equalisation is getting a lot closer to what the AFL want. Removing Carlton from the equation, every other team has won 3 games or more and there is only 2 games separating 3rd and 12th at the moment. I would say it's trending in the right direction, barring a few anomalies like Tom Lynch as a free agent to Richmond, Scully for a nothing pick, Danger for less than market value in 2015 etc.

You're comparing apples and oranges using two different comps and a whole bunch of different indicators. It doesn't work, lol

West Ham and Arsenal moved from London to London. United moved from Manchester to Manchester. I'm not sure what your point is, it's the equivalent of moving from Moorabbin to Docklands. In fact that's probably exaggerating it.

And how well did that go?

People react to relocation the same way, even in the one greater city, because getting across a large city compared to local commute changes how many can attend (remember the Waverley hate)

Again, the original post was it does not happen in Europe without riots. It does, it's just not common

Just fine, because in all cases the moves were a few kilometres at most and easily reachable by train for their fan base. And in some cases the move was over a century ago (Arsenal and Manchester United). You ignore that Europe in general and England in particular differentiate areas differently to us, they'd consider Footscray and Williamstown as completely different cities because they're four miles apart.

Again, the original post was it does not happen in Europe without riots. It does, it's just not common

No it doesn't, you're conflating a move of a couple of suburbs with interstate or international moves. If they proposed moving West Ham to Dublin or Glasgow, the owners would need to watch their backs.

so its gone from riots is EU sides relocate, to riots ONLY if a division 1 team, AND in the last 20 years, AND its interstate or international?

any other goal posts you wish to move??

What goal posts? I told you nobody cares about a pub team, you're deliberately trying to destroy all context because it doesn't fit your preconceived viewpoint. That's why all your examples are total garbage that don't prove the point you're making.

Yeah, either pub teams or teams from over a century ago. Anyone calling Juventus a franchise that could just up and leave for Rome tomorrow, is on the sauce. That's my point. Any serious club wouldn't move.
