Gee, we've picked up some absolute bargains even ignoring the father/son pickups.
(However some others have been quite expensive in heineken sight).

Mate, we absolutely killed it in 2004. Prismall, Nablett and Egan for absolute bargains and Ottens. Gave up Moloney but look where he is act now, always injured with osteitis pubis.

Possibly Dal Santo for Bartel, but is that any better than Jimmy? Given we've had pick 7 or worse mostly, we have done pretty well. Mackie is a solid player now, and still improving. Tenace is probably the weakest selection at his high drafting level, but there are several worse players around that are gracing the lists of other clubs. Sampi for one!!

After a horrid start where it took Geelong three years to eventually get someone who even played a game off the draft, i think we've done very well. In 1999 we also got Cam Mooney and Enright in the exchange for Colbert, and best of all we exchanged then 28 y/o Mansfield for pick 31, which we then snagged Chappy!! Ling and Corey were also picked in 1999, gee a huge core of our side today has come from that draft.

But to answer the question, we could have snagged instead of Jimmy, Luke Molan (9), Sam Power (10), Richard Cole (11), or Brent Reilly (12) before Dal Santo at 13th that year. Umm, i'l take Jimmy thanks! Question is would X.Clarke, D.Hale or A.Sampi be better players than Jimmy right now? Bet some of those clubs are spewing!!

The further you go back in geelong's drafting the worse it gets. Which is the good news!

With limited resources the club has done very well of late.

And anybody that says that Scarlett , Gablett, Nablett and Mblake were lay down miseres as father sons doesn't know their footy.
Lots of teeth gnashing must have happened before each was brought on board.

Remember Gaz jnr at telstra in his first game? - like a rabbit in the headlights.

Ben Graham stuffed it by trying to handball in the goal square.

I remember vividly a goal Gaz kicked at KP in a practice match, in fact it may have been a first up run. Almost identical to his first goal at Telstra dome almost 50 out on the boundary... Ah, to watch the boy come so far!!

Yep it was against the bombers. Gaz looked like an auskick kid who had strayed on to the park. With one of his few possessions, near the square, he panicked and stuffed up the chance. The Essendon supporters near me were laughing and paying out on the cats recruiting people and supporters. An obvious dud they said!

Little did they know! I'd like to see them now to discuss this matter again.

Anyone got a list of the ones we could have had? That always makes one wonder.
Hmm, as an exercise in masochism...

2001
Pick 69, the Great McCarthy
Pick 70, pass
Pick 71, Brian Harris.

2002
Pick 52, pass
Pick 53, Adam Selwood.

2003
Pick 54, pass
Pick 55, Sam Fischer.

...it's closer to ticklish than mortally wounding. Going back further...

1999
Pick 17, Ezra Bray
Pick 18, F&S (Rhyce Shaw :D)
Pick 19, Brad Green.

1998
BIG OUCH. Trading Pick 8 for Jason Mooney = Jude Bolton.

1997
Pick 29, Marc Woolnaugh (F&S, high expectations but injury ravaged)
Pick 30, Paul McMahon
Pick 31, Simon Black.

Barring Mooney/Bolton, trading our picks hasn't caused much heartache either. Little gained, but not hurt the other way.
Pick 55 for Brent Grgic = Brad Miller, who has shown little since being considered a bargain pick-up
An on-traded Pick 20 for David Haynes = Sam Butler.
Picks 27, 45, 57 for Mitchell White = Teddy Richards (Charman follows at 29 after F&S), Trent Carroll, Steve Sziller.
Pick 11 for Justin Murphy = Trent Sporn (I'm ignoring S Burgoyne at 12)
Pick 42 for Kent Kingsley = Daniel Pratt (Mark Williams 43)
The picks in the Colby trade, 53 +67 = Clayton Lassock, Robert Shirley
Pick 37 for Tom Harley = Adam Morgan (One B Fevola at 38)
Pick 13 for Brett Spinks = Callum Chambers.

Other clubs have done worse, a LOT worse.
