We have no way of knowing where the truth lies here. I was just pointing out that what Robbo said tonight conflicts with the Bombers public statement today.
We don't know where the truth lies but I don't think the Bombers statement tells us that Robbo is wrong. Of course they will say publicly that they haven't conceded anything. What insiders might have told Robbo could be an entirely different thing.

Correct! It just tells us the two views don't accord.

This whole drugs issue -the more you read -im coming to the conclusion that the so called recreational drugs are performance enhancing as well

I was reading what Dean Waters the ex boxer was saying -i think it was after the Sonny Bill Williams fight -where the opponent tested positive -i might be wrong there

But Dean Waters was saying -that methamhetamines is a great drug for a boxer-he said if you had a title fight -and you took methamhetamines -it gave you a feeling of invincibility -which was a great mindset for a boxer -didnt matter how good or big a reputation your opponnent had -you just thought youd knock him out. He said -you just had to take the right amount -he gave an example of some Commonwealth title holder -who took too much -and his arms couldnt keep up with his brain

This whole sorry drugs mess -they ought to ban any illegal drugs -the 3 strikes is pathetic -if you work in the mining industry -you are tested regularly-and if its a positive reading -your out on your arse -but thats the real world.

The ABC had a clip on the news tonight which included comments from the WADA Director-General who is in Australia at present. It gives an indication of the extent the problem. The clip is here.

The semantics the EFC might be playing is with the word "banned".

They are not conceding their players took "banned substances".

Meaning they did take stuff, but the club is not conceding they are prohibited.

Anyway, I think they are cooked. It only remains to be seen if they are allowed to weasel out of this mess which is entirely of their own making.

BLUES PAIR SECRETLY TAPED CHEMIST
By: Nick McKenzie and Richard Baker
May 2, 2013

Two Carlton Football Club officials participated in a secret spying operation targeting the chemist who supplied Essendon's controversial supplement program. The two officials from the Blues' high-performance unit secretly recorded South Yarra chemist Nima Alavi - with one of the Carlton officials wearing a hidden wire - after Carlton was badly defeated by the Bombers early last season.
It is unclear why the Carlton officials decided to tape Mr Alavi or to seek an insight into Essendon's supplement regime, which was implemented by sports scientist Stephen Dank and which the Bombers went to great lengths to keep secret. At the time, senior Carlton officials were deeply suspicious about the rapid physical development of several Essendon players, sparking fierce debate inside the Blues about the Bombers' sports science and fitness program. Thanks for that HTR. Apart from how it will affect inter club relations, I thought the most telling para in that piece was:

Efforts to penalise Bombers' players for using AOD9604 are likely to face legal challenges because the players were assured that it was WADA-compliant and no senior Essendon staff thought to get a second opinion.
This whole saga has a fair way to go yet.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/biochemist-to-tell-all-on-peptides-20130501-2itcq.html
The biochemist who imported peptides linked to the AFL performance-enhancing drug scandal has promised to tell all to the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority when he is called to give evidence next week.

Shane Charter says he has agreed to give evidence and expects to be examined over two days. ''I will co-operate fully. I have nothing to hide and hope I can help them reach the right outcome,'' he said.

Charter said he had been told he would be examined on the nature of the peptides he imported from China, his knowledge of drug use by footballers, and his relationship with sports scientist Stephen Dank, who ran the Essendon supplement program in 2012 before he was sacked.
He would provide ASADA with a series of text messages and emails from Dank that he hopes will shed light on the program, he said.

The HS is all over the Charter story too. I'm not sure how much credibility that guy has. I quoted an 'Offsiders' comment by Gerard Whateley about him earlier in the thread.

Interesting times!

Thanks for that, AM.
The outcome will prove to be either CIA or Maxwell Smart 'interesting'. I fear a little of each, considering the characters involved

wonder if that game will be looked at by Geelong as a must-win elimination final given the current circumstances.
Footy public will suggest that Essendon would have won the 2013 flag if not for the punishment which is about to head their way but a win against them in a fortnights time...no excuses if we happened to win the flag as we can always say we defeated them and would have done so again in September.

(getting ahead of myself)
The footy public won't suggest that... Bombers fans probably will

You have no idea how thoroughly conflicted I am with the idea that it may be Carlton who starts hammering nails into Hirdy's career coffin...
Carlton have always been at the cutting edge on the moral and ethical issues and dilemmas facing clubs, players and officials.
One way or the other.
99% of the time, the other.

This.

Ok, take Ben Cousins for instance.
When he was at the peak of his drug use whilst playing, you cant tell me he didnt use speed before a footy match.
If anyone has seen the effects of speed on the mind, it almost mirrors the way he used to play.

I remember seeing Cousins on multiple occasions, pretty much every match, just spew & keep on running - often whilst on the run.

Now anyone who has worked out to the extent of needing to spew knows that once you chunder it takes a bit to get back to being able to keep on going - usually a few minutes.
And for elite footy players, they condition themselves to be able to push to this threshold so that their body no longer has the tendency to vomit as its conditioned to handle it, and/or they can tell when they need a rest to push to the limit without overstepping the ling.

Unless that is if you are on a mind altering drug that doesnt allow your mind and your body to work together & the mind just keeps on going......
Just the frequency of Cousins' vomits for me says that its not just him having a very strong mind - naturally anyway.

Nah, I think everyone will label them as cheats & anything they do this season will be null & void.
But having said that, if they do get done, any team that beats them this season will look a hell of a lot better!!

The thing that doesnt sit well with me is the fact that these investigations probably arent going to be done by the end of the season - not with the customary legal challenges after the punishments are handed down etc - could drag on for a year or more yet before a final resolution and punishment are handed down.

So what happens if the Bombers do win the flag against say Us or another team & then the AFL retrospectively strip them of the title & the season the same way the Storm had their flags taken from them?!
Sure, we or any other team would go down in the books as the premiers, but it strips the rightful winning team of their grand final day celebrations & becomes nothing more really than a useless stat.

Realistically the AFL need a swift resolution & punishment, but with all the legal implications & the inept and inefficient legal system, I cant see this happening.

The AFL could suspend the 6 players for bringing the game into disrepute before they even get to court, couldnt they?

Then whoever wins the flag gets it untainted, unless its Essendon.

Realistically they should as soon as the findings are released next week, as essendon have already admitted guilt.

But then they have also admitted that the whole team has taken the anti obesity drug too, so I can't see the afl suspending the whole team.

Surely they can't keep up the season they are having with all this going on - usually teams need everything to fall in to place & everything working like clockwork to win a flag....
