Geelong's racist policies

Fact: Derek Kickett wanted to play for geelong in 88, but was labelled Coloured by certain individuals who were working at the club in a recruiting capactiy at the time - this is disgusting and i hope Kickett sues the club for discrimination.
Fact: As Patrick Smith rightly points out, if the club was desperate to draft that champ from the NT Michael long, they could have, they had three draft choices in the draft, before the Bombers drafted Long, and only one (Adrian Fletcher) wasn't a dud.
Whoever made that drafting decision was probably biased towards the fact that Long was an aboriginie.

What does this tell you about Geelong's admin at the time. I think it's disgusting, and being a passionate Geelong supporter i hope that whoever disgraced the name of the club and hurt the feelings of a champion like Kickett should be charged with discrimination.

Patrick Smith is renown for these inflamatory statements with supposed documentary evidence hat he can rarely produce when pushed. For this reason and this reason alone I don't believe a word of it.

As for Geelong not drafting Longy or Kickett, they were both playing in the SANFL when they were drafted and both were not drafted the year before by anyone. The year they were drafted many teams had drafted other players in preference before Essendon drafted them, so were they all racist too?? Of course not.

So G4E you are saying that a club who neglects to draft two Aboriginal players years ago are racist. Well that means every club is because these two players were overlooked for the previous 70+ drafts they were eligible for before Essendon finally took them on.

Take anything some media personalities say with a grain of salt and you will stay saner.

Geelong4eva, you are officially a dick head in every sence of the word. Anyone who believes a Patrick Smith article has to be, especially one where he shows absolutely no documentation what-so-ever to back himself up. Bill McMaster was a terrific recruiting officer, he and Bob Davis were jointly responsible for getting Polly Farmer to Geelong, if they weren't racist then, I seriously doubt that they would be in 1988, the Bi-centenial year.

The fact remains, Derek Kickett and Michael Long were both taken before Geelong had a chance. If you knew your Geelong history, (which clearly you don't)the word came back that Long was a handy player, but not one to be picked at your first pick, because most clubs, not just Geelong believed him to be too light, Derek Kickett was considered a bit slow and as a forward, probably wouldn't fit in considered Geelong boasted Ablett, Brownless and Stoneham. He wouldn't have got a go at Geelong.

To Patrick Smith: Produce the document in question or prepare your newspapers and your own lawyers for a battle in the courts which based on the current evidence you don't have a hope of winning.

Geelong racist?

From the prosecution: A document from a journalist that hasn't seen the light of day.

From the defence: Polly Farmer and Brian Peake were past captains. Ronnie Burns plays there, and I remember a ferocious tug of war between North Melbourne and Geelong for the services of Jim and Phil Krakouer. As for Geelong's failure to select Long and pick three duds instead, may I remind people that players like James Hird, Chris Grant, Byron Pickett, and Dean Kemp were not picked until well past the 50th selection in various drafts. As for that document, even if it did exist, it was the views of one person and we don not know what action Geelong may have taken on it. If it was true, you cannot smear a club that would employ about 100 people and has the support of hundreds of thousands of fans just on the alleged views of one.

I have read elsewhere in these postings that you do not like geelong4eva's tone or some of the statements he/she has made, which is fair enough. but you are hypocrites yourselves because you have just descended to the same petty level you have had the temerity to criticise.

Debra, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Have you seen some of the crap that he/she/it has been writing recently especially about his/her/its own team.

G4E takes every opportunity to bag Geelong, even if its unjustified. He/she/it takes great pleasure in bagging Essendon, North, and any other teams supporters on this forum and even infultrates other club forums like StKilda, Essendon, North, Richmond.

As is my understanding G4E has actually been balck listed on the Geelong forum.

The facts remain, Derek Kicket was taken at number 60, so were 59 picks worth of clubs racist as well?

Michael Long was considered too light and was Essendons third pick, I guess they were racist too because they didn't pick him up at 1. Geelong drafted Adrian Fletcher with its first pick and a Ray Sterrett with its second, admitadly, Sterrett didn't come on the way he was expected by Fletcher has just played his 200th senior game. I'd have Fletch any day over Kickett, and that's not being racist.

Geelong has had club captains who have been Aboriginal, Polly Farmer and Brian Peake, Farmer also coached Geelong. I don't know of any other club that could say that.

Unfortunately the issue rose becuase of a journalist not doing his full homework properly. Did Patrick Smith ever think to ask anyone at the football club if the racist policy was infact true? Did he speak to Bill McMaster? Did he show the document to anyone at the football club so they could verify it for him? Has he proved his words by showing the so called 'coloured' document to anyone? The answer to all of these questions is no.

If the truth be known, someone's set him up, probably from The Age after he ended allegances with them. (I'm not saying this is right, just a theary)

Sorry Debra, it's not a serious issue until it can be proved.

Well said GCG. Patrick Smith's pompous,cynical meanderings aren't worth bothering about but when he makes serious allegations against a Club he really must put up or shut up! I'm glad he's gone to the Australian so I don't have to read him any more.

Just a couple of corrections from this thread: Derek Kickett was originally drafted by North in 1988 and went to Essendon in 1990. Brian Peake has a Maori heritage rather than aboriginal.
