News Gene Hackman and wife found dead

Legendary Hollywood tough guy actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa have been found dead in their apartment in New Mexico. New Mexico police are saying their are no suspicious circumstances so it looks like Hackman, his wife and the family dog, also found dead, died of natural causes on or about the same time. I guess the full story will come to light over the next few days.

Hackman was 95 and his wife 63. Apparently Gene Hackman became a recluse in his latter years and had little to do with the film industry.

A star in many memorable films, I first saw Gene Hackman playing Popeye Doyle in The French Connection way back in the early 1970s. Hackman won the Best Actor Academy Award for that role. He later won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Unforgiven which starred Clint Eastwood.

Probably my favourite all time movie actor. Could play just about anyone/any role. Probably never played a pretty boy type.

An ex marine, joined up just after WWII ended at 16 years of age, turned actor is a pretty rare thing to go with his rare CV.

That was a genuinely disturbing movie. I watched that in California, in Palm Desert, just east of Palm Springs when I visited my sister who was living there in 1991. The mood became very errie in the cinema. Gene was brillliant in that role, but also in several other roles.

After his stint in the US Marines Gene Hackman took on a variety of jobs then decided to try acting, he didn't land a starring role until he was 30. Hackman enrolled in drama classes where he and a fellow student were told 'you will never amount to much'. That fellow student happened to be Dustin Hoffman. With 4 Academy Awards between the two of them someone got it horribly wrong. I wonder how that person feels now?

One of the things about Gene Hackman is he rarely, if ever, made a bad movie. He was one of those actors who, if your saw his name on the bill you know it would be a movie worth watching.

Very sad.

When it was announced that 2 people and the dog died and there were no suspicious circumstances, it just didn't sound right or normal. Its sad they had nobody visit them for over a week and Gene just faded away after his wife died from her health issues
