Ready for the term 'Mysoginist' to be thrown around here, but should articles on the Womens League be mixed wth the Mens League on the AFL website?

Would it be better and clearer for them to be separate?
I can understand the need for the current sell but are you going to want articles mixed between the two leagues?
For now, yes. I think once the game establishes itself a bit and can kind of stand on its own feet, it will have its own site and content will be separate.
I don't see a problem while they are trying to create interest and build the brand.

James Hird has plotted his own tragic course

Patrick Smith doesn't hold back here.
Certainly makes his point but just doesn't seem to be the right approach.

Systematic Danny? Systematic?
Would love him to explain how this 'system' worked.
It's a strong piece. Whatever side of the argument you sit on, it's difficult to argue with any of what he said...

I do wonder about the argument that social media played a part in this. Personally, I have no time for social media, and cyber bullying is rampant these days. But I find it difficult to believe that James Hird would be keeping tabs on sites like Bigfooty, Carlton board, general AFL discussion to see what people think about him....

Systematic implies it is pre-meditated, he's a public figure, so systemic can readily mean public backlash. Considering the excessive public backlash (not by those in positions of authority, but by the general public) that has been occurring in the wake of his overdose, that would seem to be the point of the quote.

Some of it feels a little too contradictory.
Sledge hammer one moment, fluffy stuff the next....and I for one sure won't be praying for James.

Is the last line a metaphor or does Patrick know something?
Incredibly, no one wants to hang the man who has already been punished - and will continue to be punished - for his actions. There's a difference between him being unemployable in certain industries, and him being thrown up as a modern villain.

The main pages should absolutely contain women's content, and when it falls out of the current news cycle, there's the women's page, the draft pages, etc.

Why do you feel the need to differentiate? It's so early in the piece that surely every article is a chance to develop initial impressions, rather than noise. I have next to no idea how we'll structure, what our best 22 looks like, etc.

I mean sure, the AFL site could benefit from some article tags, but I want current content from all things in the AFL umbrella on the front page. Haven't seen you crying foul about U18 competitions and state league news being on the front page.

I just raised it as a topic and it has nothing to do with me. Why is that hard to understand?

It isn't an editorial piece.........just some simple questions raised for discussion. Read again to find this to be the case. :)

Systematic means being organized to a plan.
Who planned what happened to Hird? The print/visual media conspired? Social media conspired against Hird? We all conspired?

Maybe the AFL, ASADA & The Courts conspired against Hird......You know what and when it's all boiled down......Jim did this to himself and if it was someone else doing the same shit Hird did, then the same 'conspiracy' would have rained upon them.
Sometimes it can be about the situation rather than the individual. Do you hear that Mr. Allan Hird, Danny Corcoran and Mr. Cornes?

Corcoran used the word systemic. It fits.

My only beef with the AFL website is the typical journalist headline which can give you heart in the mouth moments, like "Key forward out for Blues" and then you read the article and find out it's the AFLW team.

But then if you were clever enough you would realise that our men's team doesn't have a key forward so it has to relate to the AFLW.

I've made that one up on the back of being drawn to an article on the Power losing a key position player or ruck, only to find that it was their AFLW team.
I suppose it's the fact that there hasn't been a AFLW game played as yet so you immediately think of the men's team. I think once they start playing it might make a difference.

Just noticed this part that warrants a reply.

U18 is a feeder system into the AFL. You do understand the difference, surely?
State Leagues news on the front page? When does that happen? State Leagues have their own websites

Here's a current headline on the site: Blues turn up the heat

Open it up and you get: Blues women ready to turn up the heat

Crying foul you say:
This is what I immensely dislike about the reaction of some people when certain topics get raised.
They go out on the attack with emotive and degrading terms to bolster their.....or someone elses.....viewpoints. Poor form.

So you have an issue with... clickbait?

The titles of articles, on all websites are designed to get the most page views, so they go with whatever will get more views. That's why that article has one title to link you to it, and another on the page itself. Not to put a downer on it, but more people will click a page that suggests the men's side than if they used the actual article title, especially seeing as we're starved for news at the moment.

No issue with the inclusion of women's footy on the main page. It's all footy, isn't it?

Do hate clickbait, though.

The media can only fool you if you have foolish expectations.
The media by far and large won't fool someone who hasn't picked up a paper in 10 years nor watched any silly television.

This 'media' though is somewhat disingenuous to sell something in one fashion, only to deliver something quite different.
Is this just the acceptable standard today................and we're going to like it?

Good. So I was right then. :)
Just had a look and the real estate previously available, didn't allow for the full headline, which is sort of fair enough then.

What else we can we debate now? :) Kick the ball FFS!!!!

Headline not matching the content has been happening since the first book rolled off the printing press. The abundance of media outlets and mediums now just serves to highlight it. Anecdotally it seems they have been getting worse too. It's nothing new.

RE: State leagues, it happens at least once a week in-season, often two or three times, then there's usually 2 or 3 generic articles in the lead up to the draft, and some player profiles as well. Any major team/league news gets covered also (eg. Frankston exiting the VFL).

RE: The women's team headlines, the bigger question is this: would you have said anything if you clicked through and it was a headline for the men's team? You've automatically placed the gents as of higher importance, which to a degree makes sense because the AFLW hasn't kicked a ball in anger yet, but it's another thing entirely to crack in as though a non-specific title demands a default position. Entitled even.

So, it's not me being emotive in this case.

RE. State Leagues: OK, I don't notice them but I bet they relate to how AFL listed players performed rather than discuss names the AFL doesn't really recognise. Is this right? If so, you can see the correlation.........you can, can't you?

RE. TAC Cup. I think you get it now, so that's good.

RE. The Womens team: Have you even phrased that question properly?
I'm viewing the AFL site (not an AWFL site) and expect to read an article about a team called The Blues that are part of the AFL and get something completely different. I don't think you understand my point at all but that's OK.

Anyway, the womens League will have their own website in due course.
It wouldn't be right if it didn't. Would it?

Just for a bit of fun then. Given I posed very simple questions, why did you need to use terms such as 'crying foul'

Explain to me how that had a fit into the discussion. Was it fair play or just a little emotive leveraging for your argument?

Answer =

ps. Credit for not finding a way to sneak in a racist, tin-foil hatter or mysoginist. :)

No I still don't agree with the U18 point, because you sound like you'll kick up a stink when the women's nationals get more coverage. You're right in that the state league coverage favours AFL players, but there's still a decent amount of mentions for outstanding performances, particularly if it raises someone's profile as a draft prospect.

The AFLW doesn't have its own site. It has:

http://afl.com.au/womens

You remain upset that a title without gender should automatically be referencing the men's team, and that anything else is deceptive. It's not deceptive, it's nondescript, and reflects a fairly minor error on the part of the reporter.
