Surely neither of them is stupid enough to be part of a forum that takes calls from the public... They'll cop a pasting
You're forgetting the magic trick of talk-back radio; the editor/program manager.

Sure, you'll get the dud calls, but by and large they won't get through, and once the initial backlash against the two of them fades, the status quo will return and we'll have to either choose to listen or switch off.

Hate talkback radio.

All very true, G. But this isn't Finey we're talking about. The weight of numbers queuing up to bake those two will be so great, by the time the producers filter through the calls to find a "friendly" one, they'll have hours of dead air and silence...

And how can you hate talkback radio? It's a window into the human condition, a glimpse into the common man...

No, not really... But it's so much fun to listen to, when Richmond blow ANOTHER three goal lead with four minutes left in the game... Pure Gold !

One word, really.

Ads.

And the fact that I rarely enjoy listening to blowhards - whether talking sport or politics - talk over callers, cutting them off in order to be able to transition to something they wanted to say anyway. I don't listen to SEN because they had Rita Pahani on for some reason, and she dismissed a caller based on where he lived.

Give me music - even nigh unlistenable rubbish - and no ads over people doing their best to become Alan Jones, and Frank Walker.

To come back to what you were saying, that's assuming they don't generate a little outrage of their own.

A junior staffer calls in, and says something outrageous - probably Carlton/Collingwood/Richmond/Hawthorn related - and gets the switchboards going with responses to that, whether legitimate or other in house callers.

Still think John Elliott was right and we should have fought our draft penalties.
Unprecedented and still not matched - shows how out of line the penalties were.

If John Elliott had abided by the rules and not thought himself above the law, we would never have been placed in the position to incur fines and lose draft picks. He is an arrogant self centred old fool who left the club in ruins. He cost the club a fortune with his Princes Park refurbishment, and knocked back decent offers from the AFL to move to the MCG. He knew best. His legacy is two flags, but the cost to CFC has been 17 years of hell, which we are still trying to overcome, such has been the impact.

er, are you me by any chance, Gethelred ?

Agree that was the outcome. But it is hard to blame Elliot for our last 17 years as we had other 'fools' running things (into the ground).
Optus Oval would have worked brilliantly for us, except AFL got a sweet heart deal on Docklands from the Government (free money).
Cheating was dumb, but it is clear in hindsight that we were not the only one doing it - CFC just took it too far and paid an insane penalty as a farcical demonstration to the other clubs (whipping boy).
Sacking JDE was justified, but he was actually very good for the club during his reign.

Agree with everything you said MB, except I think our s**t drafting and development of players has hurt us far more in the last 10 years than the original penalties did. Remember, we have had over a dozen drafts since then!

We incurred the wrath of the Commission and the other clubs because of his arrogance. In 1993 the AFL made Carlton a huge offer to wipe all debt, and move to the MCG. Elliott's ego refused. It was a once in a lifetime offer. At the time we we were fined, we had an old team which was past its best. Parkin implored Elliott to rebuild after the 1999 Grand Final, but as usual Elliott knew best. He never accepted the draft and was always looking for quick fixes. This is where he consigned the club to mediocrity for at least 25 years. We were the equivalent of the Brisbane Bears. We were signing players who were not up to it because we were barred from the draft. It was a case of one step forward, three steps back. We have been chasing our tails ever since. Yes we have made some appalling draft selections, as well, but that is part and parcel of the game, and the risks associated with a draft. Look at St.Kilda. Played finals and Grand Finals and now they are on the cusp of another successful 6 or 7 years, whereas CFC has had a brief dalliance under Ratten and MM when we made the finals at the expense of the cheats.

It infuriates me that supporters look back and say he won two flags. We needed leadership during the late 90's and early 2000's and instead we go an old autocrat. Best day was when we removed his name from the Grandstand. Hopefully that finally registered with Elliott about what everyone thought about him. Now his son gives the silly old fool air time on his radio show and allows him to make a fool of himself every Friday, and highlighting his misogynistic beliefs as he did last Friday.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Hanging on to the past is like letting someone you despise live rent-free in your head.

It's all a matter of choice MB!! :p

That makes it difficult for Jab to get his Brownlow back.
