North lost the game by bad kicking on goals....the meltdown by North supporters is expected.

The melt is also spurred by the fact that had they beaten Hawthorn they might have finally been taken seriously by a few. They're a good top 8 side and nothing more. Slight chance they may cash in on a bradbury style premiership if everyone falls over, but they're not top tier quality, and won't be with this list.

On one hand I think that Scott is a serial whinger, on the other I think it's great that the umpiring gets a close look at. They are human, Yes But the afl treats the issue as some sort of sacred cow.

It is so frustrating that the umps don't get criticised in the media and by commentators more - much harder for clubs to do it but the media wait for the clubs before they consider it news. Banning cd from releasing data on them is not a great look either.

They need to be more accountable, but that's only likely to come with professionalising them.

The crazy thing is all fans accept that they make mistakes and are fine with that - just want it admitted more, and to be able to feel that it is just mistakes they're seeing from them.

Amen.

Told the flogs over that way their Freo 2015 all over again. That didn't end well.

Hawks are probably at 80% of what they were last year. Missing Roughie and also Hodge. Definite chance again, however the opposition has closed the gap as well... bringing them closer together.

There is s till a long way to go this year, but they are still a good shot. They remind me of Geelong in 2009. They have the big game players who know when to turn it on. If they make the GF they will be hard to beat.

With respect, they are playing very wll this year and are as much of a chance as any other top 4 club IMO.

I agree but that does not excuse the hypocrisy.

By the way good to see one Verdun Howell inducted in to the Hall of Fame !

If Lindsay is not getting free kicks its because he's the boy who cried wolf and he's trained every umpire in the AFL to ignore him.

Hawks continue to be able to win games without dominating contested possession.

Football IQ.

The way the Hawks can manipulate a hundred, seemingly small, moments.

North should have put 'em away, but here we are... again.

Tap/flick of the ball, arm/hand grabs, stripping the ball, body leaning/grappling, mental pressure, keeping the ball alive in the correct spots (often perceived as accidental), handballs bordering on cheating (aka getting away with every little single thing you can), etc.

Ahead of the curve by some distance.

If Roughy was playing at his best, I'd have 'em as flag favs.

Realistically they have only played 5 good teams this year:

Adelaide
Bulldogs
Sydney
Geelong
Hawks

They just managed to beat the Crows at home round 1. They also managed to get over the line against the Dogs in one of the worst spectacles of the year. Awful goal kicking from the Dogs saved them.

The final 3 who are all contenders have beaten them, with the first 2 doing so comfortably. Also were lucky to beat both us and Melbourne.

Not trying to be a smart arse but I n personally have the opposing view, rate them as almost no chance of winning the flag. The run home is brutal, very unlikely to finish top 4.

Top level umpires get paid more than many people do in their full time jobs. They need to ACT professional.

How does it help anyone at all if the media criticize the umpires more? They aren't going to umpire any better. All it does is upset fans and potentially stop younger kids from umpiring. And how can the umpires admit they got things wrong? Surely we don't want to hear from 27 umpires after the round.

I would probably prefer the stats of mistakes by umpires to be published by the umpires following their review - both frees missed and mistakenly given. It would form a league table of performance of the Umps.

Wouldn't hurt to have an optional umps conference if something demands it - not 27 mind you. I remember an EPL referee getting in front of the camera to admit a howler after the game a few years back - it went down well, calmed the situation and he got a lot of respect for it - not sure the referee's boss was happy mind you which I think is ridiculous.

Other than with your good self on BF, criticism is a successful way to change someone's behaviour..........

I think the nature of the game leads to the umps getting caught up in it and reacting to the score and the teams involved with no consequence. If their mistakes were going to be published they might think twice before they get influenced by the crowd or the favourites/big team struggling in the 4th. If the worst performing get relegated even more so.

I don't think it would have any impact on the desire to umpire AFL. The problems at lower level getting umpires is more to do with the reduction of on-field discipline than anything that occurs at AFL level - perhaps the publication of the extent of the fallibility of AFL umps would make players/parents be more understanding of local umpires.......yeah right, I might be hoping a bit too much on that last point!

Only income is more crucial than additional income, but I take your point - professionalisation of umpires is more than just financial - and agree they need to act professional regardless.

Do the AFL put every players mistakes up? I suppose they sort of do with CD but I still don't see how that would help umpires or supporters. If you got a bad deal you would just be more angry as a supporter. Also it would certainly discourage younger kids going into umpiring because unlike players who have people supporting them no one supports umpires so it would just be more negative stuff for young kids to read if they were interested in umpiring.

The other thing is people say a good umpire isn't noticed but then you say lets have umpire conferences. All I see happen from that is people saying did you hear that umpire. He was talking crap again. There would be nothing good to come out of that. I have no idea if umpires get caught up in it but even if they do I see no way of stopping that because coaching would already be telling them to not get caught up with the action. As for the last point well if local umpire numbers are down then eventually the quality of AFL umpires are down.

Eric Hipwood looks the goods

What I love about watching the Hawks is that every game is a pin point kicking clinic.

This is what we should aspire to.

They just nail their kicks so many times it's not funny.
Their ability to chip little 25-30m kicks to a space that allows a clean UC mark for a teammate is phenomenal
