Haven't read the article, that was the only piece they played on SEN, I might of fallen for the old "out of context"
http://m.theage.com.au/afl/id-love-...missioner-andrew-newbold-20160218-gmxbe6.html

The Hawks have recently enjoyed an extraordinary period of dominance, winning three premierships in a row, but Newbold told SEN his priority would be making all the teams competitive and self-sustaining.

"At the moment we've got the haves and the have-nots still, I think it's really important that all the clubs have at least a break-even position," he said.....

Part of the problem smaller clubs faced was the high cost of playing at stadiums, which will be helped when the AFL acquires Etihad Stadium in Melbourne. The AFL can take ownership of the stadium in March 2025.

"I think it's a key plank to making clubs like St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs and Kangaroos a lot more self sufficient and profitable," he said.

.................................................

There's no doubt he's a devotee of the Hawthorn 'no or low equalisation' mantra - of course he would be - but he's not too bad.

The AFL have paid a bomb to get people and computers to do their fixturing. For nothing I will tell them even the first game of NAB will gather interest for the proper season and they should have scheduled an exciting match up for game one. It's the same with carlton with the first game of the season and friday night games. Who ever does the scheduling is a moron. Even Port Adelaide versus the Dogs or an even match up is better than Blues v Hawks.
"Hey guys, y'know what'd be a great way to get the season started? Let's play the wooden spooners versus the premiers. That's sure to be a ripper of a match!"

You can't make up this level of stupid.

Makes no difference at all. Everyone knows they are practice matches and that game would get more publicity than a PA versus WB game. Premiership side playing round one seems fair enough to me. Anyway great to have the footy back. Still cant believe some people want to make it a shorter season by having 17 games.

It would be better for the clubs memberships, better for Foxtel, better for fans if they thought about putting up a decent match. I would have watched Hawks West coast or some decent match up. Carlton get to start the season year after year with Richmond when it could be the most watched match of the year if they scheduled the previous years GF teams in a rematch or two decent up and comers. It's foolish marketing and lazy thinking. They seem content to just sit back and hope no one takes over the number one sport role. After a lay off everyone is ken. That shit just douses enthusiasm.

Its not what you would have watched, its what most people would watch. We know they are practice games. It doesn't really matter who players. And bugger all people would buy extra memberships because they were the first or 8th game of these practice matches. And why would you have a match up of GF sides in the practice match series. Of course you wait until the real stuff. And I don't the AFL sit back all. Would have the biggest marketing group of any sport in Australia.

They aren't very good then. They don't understand their own fans, they allow stupid stadium deals that cripple clubs- they entered into a development deal that will mean the SA clubs are hamstrung like us at Etihad for the Adelaide oval. They tinker with rules that actually annoy the fans, they piss off sponsors, they irritate people with their wishy washy response to dramas and upset the big clubs and the small clubs. I would say these days they have gone from being highly regarded as an organisation to being seen as a bunch of incompetent dick heads by a lot of people.

There are faults with the AFL but its clearly the best run big competition in Australia and one the best run in the world. Every comp has issues. They run the competition so 18 clubs survive. Previously they ran it so whoever survived, survived. As a club that would really in trouble if they ran like the 80's I'm glad they ran it how they do now. And I'm pretty sure the Adelaide oval deal is fixed now. Do you know any other sport in Australia that gets a very good ground for a dollar and has about 6 stadiums built for no money input? They tinker with rules that annoy some but if they didn't tinker with rules then we would have stupid rules like sling tackles and bumping guys in the head and walking behind the goal line whenever you felt like, etc. Some rules they get wrong but not many. Matter of fact I cant really think of many bad rule changes.

I see it pretty much like Australia. Once there was a real spread of the riches but now it's going back the other way. The AFL just recruited Andrew Newbold who didn't want any redistribution while he was at the Hawks. It's like when government recruits insiders from corporations, he's going to run Hawthorn's agenda from the inside for them. The AFL pay lip service to buying back Etihad knowing it cripples the poorer clubs but then say we should stand on our own two feet. It's getting less balanced by the day. It's like trickle down economics, they believe a "strong competition" (big clubs doing well) means that more money comes in and trickles back to the scumbag clubs like us.

The clubs get the stadiums paid for by forcing deals on a few clubs. Why not put a surcharge on every ticket across the league to pay for the stadiums and leave the small clubs to fight on a level playing field? The Adelaide oval deal is exactly like ours where if they are getting people through the gate they make money or break even but an on field drop off will cost members, ticket sales and then cost them money to play there.

might want to ask some people over here what they think of him. didnt cover himself in glory from the chick article crap
No one cares about you Westies.

You're not even people. :P

So Newbold is going to run Hawthorns agenda from inside the AFL? Interesting. Does that mean Gillian runs our agenda. I don't think so. Newbold would be on the commission because he cares about footy, not just the hawks and he is only one vote anyway even if he was that unprofessional which I very much doubt. And the AFL have all the figures on Etihad and will buy it when the figures work in their way. You need to remember the AFL give all the money back to the clubs, it doesn't give a dividend to anyone but the clubs. By the way we get nearly 4 million because of poor gate returns and less big games. Works out very well why we are an ordinary side with ordinary attendances.

Why would the AFL make people pay more for stadiums? They don't even pay for them to be built. The government does because the AFL are smart enough to not waste money on that stuff. The Adelaide oval deal has been altered and that's fact.

You can thank Nicola Hewitt for that. Mad Freo fan, and Lachie is utterly besotted with her. :(

i don't recall when Gilligan was our president. I heard Newbold still harping on about the hawks being "taxed" in his new AFL role on SEN. You have always been an AFL supplicant who is happy being a club dictated to by the administration who use handout as a way to control the minnows. We will stay beggers until we break free of the AFL financial control.

And I don't recall one commissioner running the game. All this because you didn't like the opening game

Gees, first practice match of the year and Ross is already at his prickly, disdainful best.
Understand press conferences are annoying and you get silly obvious questions but wonder whether he really needs to be like that.

No just because I don't think they run the competition well. It's like a juggernaut that grew to quickly and now they seem to have lost control of it. I have met a few high up AFL folks over the years and love him or hate him Ross oakley was a commanding person. He was a lovely guy outside his job by the way. I met Adrian Anderson and Gillon and they are both very ordinary guys. I would hate to have me in the role that those two occupied/ occupy and they are remarkably average types of guys like myself. The top job should be a strong willed focussed individual. Even Demetriou had a bit of the Saddam about him. This bunch are reactive clowns who bend to Collingwood, Geelong and Hawthorn if they stare them down. They handled the Essendon drama like a bunch of amateurs.

Would really help though if you actually heard the questions from the media, how hard is it.
You have a few portable microphones and they are handed to the reporter asking the question.
Been an issue for years now.

Yes Ross was the man who was happy for sides to merge or fold. Imagine if we had these sort of forums back then. It would be going off tap. Ive met Gillion and he seemed fine. No idea how one meeting can make you have a decision on a person anyway. It takes a few times to really get to know people one way or another. And you say AD was commanding and then say clubs havbent the AFL over or the AFL bent over for them but you fail to realise AD was in charge for all of that not Gilian so you need to make up your mind. Anyway people without bias say the AFL is the best run comp in Australia. I will go with them and not with your one meeting of people.
