Seems odd. If he had let them know two weeks ago they could have arranged a trade for him back to Perth.
Sounds like more of the Gold Coast hardball at play. They have also stated he is barred from playing within the AFL for two years, smacks of a McCarthy vs GWS type scenario. If AFL is still his dream then I would hope he be allowed to re-enter the system after a year, but exclusions like this are an effective fork in the road that can affect his family for generations.

Whitfield to get a 6 month ban starting in the offseason for deliberately dodging a drugs test because he had something to hide.

Every penalty that gets handed down makes me feel worse for Saad. Pretty much had his career destroyed in copping the full 12 months for a protein shake.

Actually, its a bloody disgrace. Especially as ASADA actually pushed for a lengthier ban for Saad.
But can ASADA still override this if they don't think it's sufficient? ( I am assuming this is the AFL's penalty?)

Not 100% sure, don't have access to the full article on the Herald Sun, but sounds like it.

I doubt, if he was a pick 68 from Brisbane, that'd he'd be copping an 8 game ban.

Can't endanger the GWS 2017 premiership

ASADA said it was yet to receive the AFL’s full brief of evidence in the case against Whitfield and former GWS staffers Graeme Allan and Craig Lambert.

But the authority said there was nothing stopping the AFL laying its own charges under its disrepute or drug rules.

“ASADA is waiting on the additional information requested from the AFL,” an anti-doping spokesperson said.

“It is impotant that ASADA consider all relevant material before any decision is made about whether to take forward possible anti-doping rule violations.”
Sounds like it's just the AFL trying to get around a lengthy ASADA ban at this point, so ASADA could still extend it.

Andrew McQualter being promoted to assistant midfield coach at richmond.
Watch out guys... Their coming!

He's probably the type that would make a good coach.

Its the Champions that tend to be over-rated.

Jobe voluntarily hands back the brownlow.
Everybody gather round. He's a hero.

Well done Jobe. Possibly the first honourable thing that has been done during this whole scandal. Should make it easy for the AFL to move his name to the Brownlow footnotes on Tuesday which is what has to be done.

I don't believe the players were completely innocent or duped but they at least have been adequately punished. EFC on the other hand are a cesspit, riding their deciet to the No1 draft pick and treating everyone one involved as a brave hero. And don't get me started on how the AFL continue to handle the whole affair.

Not the right thread I suppose, but I agree and I also think it's interesting how Peter Summers has allowed Matt Finnis to be the public face of the club while he dropped deep into the background. The only time I heard about him for the last couple of years was when Richo announced that his dad died. I have no idea if he's doing a good job but he got the right people in and the results speak for themselves.

It's amusing how people criticised his predecessor Greg Westaway for being the invisible man but no one talks about Summers, who must have one of the lowestprofiles of the 18 club presidents. Not that I'm complaining. Perhaps someone who knows a bit more about the club infrastructure can fill us in on Mr Summers' involvement/performance/effect?
A couple of years back.....several people I know were bagging Westaway for being "invisible/low profile"........I then asked them who the Hawthorn President was.....no one could answer that question.

The Prez doesn't have to be shouting things from a roof.....if all things are running smoothly...who cares if the Prez is low key.

I believe that he was wanting Matt Finnis to join the club along with the AFL who were at the time pointing Matt in our direction.

Handed it back before they took it back LOL.
I can see the Essendope supporters praising him for it.
Totally ignoring the fact that he only had to hand it back cos he was captain of a team that did a cheating drug program.
Such a great role model Jab..err i mean Jobe.

Reading between the lines I reckon they told him he should give it back and they also told him if he declined to give it back they would take it back.

Saad was a sacrificial lamb in hindsight, in an afl attempt to make an example of coming down hard. Easy when it's a small club and a relatively unknown player.

8 weeks would be a relative travesty

To me that was the thing to do, and what i'd have told him to do if he asked.
Its clear under the rules what has to happen.
It makes Jobe look more decisive than the AFL.
