Maybe Determinant is right and we'll look at the introduction of GWS in the same way in a few decades, as the tactic that saved the AFL.

Richmond gonna smack hawthorn tonight

The umpires are doing their best to help the hawks out again though. It's getting embarrassing for the AFL. The umpires just can't get it together when they play. It's like they are so busy flogging themselves off they can't see two sides playing.

Hawks could win this by 3!
And the media is gonna be like.....great teams find a way
And then I'm gonna want to vomit!

Go Tiges!

Richmond are terrible & have somehow managed to drag Hawthorn down to their level & make it an interesting game.

Hawthorn, while they will win, should be seriously concerned with their form. Thoroughly beaten by Geelong, 3 close wins in a row with the help of some seriously questionable umpiring decisions, comprehensively slaughtered by GWS & now an arm-wrestle win over an impotent Richmond.

I don't like to defend the Hawks but they were missing a pretty handy trio in Hodge, Mitchell and Roughead tonight.

Their start to the year is eerily similar to last year (they actually started last year off worse) and it could play out the same. North look the good but will they run out of gas ala Freo? And the Dogs look to be the youthful challenger this year but will they falter like West Coast on the big stage?

Both Brisbane of the early 00's and Hawthorn have proven that the first 22 weeks don't mean a whole lot (as long as you jag a top 4 spot).

Richmond were missing a pretty handy quartet of Cotchin, Rance, Grimes & Lambert..... Everyone spoke of the Hawthorn players that were missing but failed to do the same for Richmond

Thought the Tigers got a good go as well so I reckon its level. Can I ask out of interest why the AFL would want the Hawks to beat the Tigers? The Tigers would get many more supporters to games than the Hawks if they were successful for a start. I reckon just watch the game and forget the umpires. Its a hell of a lot more fun especially when the Tigers lose.

They don't necessarily want Hawthorn to win, I just feel the umps are seriously intimidated by the senior Hawks players....

Prime example was Jack Riewoldt getting tackled into his back in the forward pocket during the 1st quarter. Umpire called play on then called for a ball up. The exact same thing then happened to Isaac Smith from that very ball up, with Jordan Lewis screaming at the umpire, who then rewarded a free to Smith for in the back.

Those moments were as close to a a carbon copy of each other as you could get & they occurred 10 seconds apart with the same umpire in control. The only reason the free was paid was because a senior Hawks player demanded it & the ump shit himself

Even on the commentary, Duck Carey said why's the umpire paying that one, the same exact thing just happened to Riewoldt a split second ago....

Like Hodge, Mitchell and Roughead? I reckon the difference in the frees you described is the umpire thought one was a free and the other wasn't. And I know the final free kick stats mean jack but it was 29 to 19 in the Tigers favour if that was the free kick count against us even if every decision was correct we would be claiming cheating against us.

Well the umpire should quit his job because they were exactly the same. You can't pick & choose what you pay a free & what you don't, that is my issue

It could have been a mistake. They make them just as players do or maybe they were slightly different and you saw them as the same. I still think the Tigers got a good run last night but because the hawks seem to have had a good run people watch a game with bias and only look for the mistakes the Hawks way. Logic suggests that 29 frees to 19 makes it hard to say the Hawks got the better deal. I certainly know no one on here would say we got the better deal if that was the free kick count against us.

Jack did his normal dive and didn't deserve a free kick.

PS Re free kicks - I'd be more concerned about the Bullies - on average they are plus 8 on free kicks for and against per game.

So far above everyone else its ridiculous.

Hawks are minus 0.2 and Saints are minus 0.8 per game
