I think the issue was the Pies won their flag in 2010 and then basically started a complete rebuild in 2012.

We were kind of in denial from 2011 through 2013 and didnt really face the facts that we needed a complete rebuild until 2014.

They have been excellent in turning damaged goods into gold. They sold off their troubled players at a time the new franchises were coming in which mean clubs wanting their talent had to pay overs.

The tail did wag the dog for a little bit, but the club then went proactive and began instituting changes to address the age disparity and commit to rebuild the list. We effectively gave the senior players one more year to get that premiership, but 2 near misses in consecutive years seemed to break them and reality was seen.

I think we then tried to do a mini rebuild for a year and a bit in 2012 and 2013 before drafting the list strategy plans in 2013

They did well out of the Beams trade, which they should have. Ending up with Crisp ,DeGoey and Greenwood.
Lamumba for Varcoe is not a clear win.
Shaw for Taylor Adams was good for a team rebuild.
Mick gifted them the Dale Thomas compo pick ( 11, compared to 25 for DalSanto, ask a North Supporter who's happy).
Dawes? Wellingham? What were they thinking.

The clear message is don't pay top dollar for some guy just because they were in a premiership.

Anzac Day match, unfortunately the Filth still get to play the Bummers (how they get the game amazes me), I believe the AFL said it was too late to change fixtures (must have had a fair idea Essendon was gone, before the fixtures were made up). IMO they should ask Richmond & Melbourne if they would like to swap, it would only mean a 5 day turn around for them, but I`m sure they would be willing.

I don't think they needed WADA to tell them it might have been a good idea as part of the punishment for the lack governance. The AFL have given a really poor impression with their desperate pandering to Essendon. It must make old soldiers proud watching a bunch of stand in players get smashed by the Pies. It's more an insult than an honour.

The way it looks from outside is that the AFL sold out the integrity of the competition to try to minimise the financial damage to a club that cheated. The Dons also cheated the salary cap remember but dobbed them selves in in an amnesty so faced no sanctions. Adelaide and Melbourne faced embarrassingly light penalties for cheating too. It doesn't give you a great deal of confidence in the administration.

I officially don't give a Rats.
Anzac day match is marginally less interesting to me than Anzac day without a match. I am not overly interested in Collingwood Essendon matches, particularly since Essendon have not been competitive for over a decade.
Its just another non-StKilda game that happens to be on Anzac day.
Its no more interesting than a GWS vs Port Adelaide game on the day before Anzac Day.
Yes Collingwood and Essendon have a lot of supporters.
But in context of 14 other teams , they also have a lot of non-supporters.

I was with the AFL right up until their "Anti Doping Tribunal" handed down the all clear for Essendon. From then I have been convinced that it's nothing more than a boys club that will circle the wagons at the first sign of an issue. The Dustin Martin incident was a clear example of this IMO and looking back over the Essendon saga the signs are there that the AFL have put a massive spin on things to try and limit the damage that would be done to that club, rather than staying impartial and running the game.

God forbid that cheaters get caught and punished.

For those that follow US sports, could you image Roger Goodell (NFL) or Adam Silver (NBA) putting up with any of this stuff?

The AFL commission is run more like these guys -

Say what you want about the AFL, but don't you EVER besmirch the proud name of Hunter Hearst Helmsley!

ANZAC day match should have involved us, after all no one in the history of the game had to change their jumper; twice because of the Germans. I don't give a rats who came up with the idea but if you want to link it to the actual day, you enter us in the convo, it's a no brainer as we're arguably the team most tied to the goddamn wars in question.

To me, that it's always been and pretty much always will be a "we thought of this, therefore it's ours" thing, on a national day in which we celebrate our history and the shared history with our immediate neighbours in NZ, we should be devaluing the Essendon v Pies match and pumping the shit out of a match in NZ. But this is the Commission, they have been and continue to be ball-less hacks since the Oakley admin with regards to governance and growth outside of the ze monies form TV.

Maybe go see Concussion and see what you think of the powers that be at the NFL.

Bloody hell, they basically covered up the brain trauma hundreds of their players were getting by discrediting, threatening. By phone, and deflecting the evidence for years.

All rats in the same gutter except the AFL are smaller rats.

GWS is trying to get an 800 million development of Canberra's manuka oval going and CEO is moving to Canberra wonder if they are willing to become Canberra Giants to keep the Riverina academy

Greater Western Anything that's not SydneySBD NSW Giants incoming.

Their logo then changes to emulate Freo and becomes a giant hand and money coloured.

Any thoughts on Eddie's new stadium proposal?
If it carves a better deal for us then it's worthwhile looking at. I can't see the taxpayers getting behind this one though, also seems Andrews is keeping himself at arms length as well.

Lots of people sit around in pubs and have ideas and talk about it.
But because its Eddy we are supposed to seriously consider it. Please take overstuffed Eddie and his overstuffed footy club out of our faces.

It won't happen before the AFL owns Etihad so its irrelevant to Stadium deals.

My belief is:
a) Eddy's concept would cost as much as two stadiums Hisense replacement and Etihad replacement.
b) Hisense has contracts with the Australian Open
c) If two games are held at the same day it will double the congestion in the area. The MCG is already harder to get in and out of by both car and public transport than Etihad.
d) The advantage of "opening up the docklands" is very much a vibe of the thing concept. If the docklands are not open enough, its because they have allowed new developments to encroach on Etihad.
e) It is problematic to get to the MCG by any road except the Monash Freeway.
f) Etihad has access from the Monash, Westgate and Tullamarine and potentially the Eastern ( except they killed the tunnel ). Cars to/from the MCG have

Summary: No clear advantage to the current situation. David Schwarz is on the money.

There is two clear advantages the way I see it. The AFL wont have run a stadium which wont be easy or cheap and the AFL don't have to spend probably 100 million on Etihad to modernise it in 10 years time. I don't think it will happen but if it did it would be a great thing.

The worst of it is that the new tenants would have to pay down the loan. I wonder which clubs would need a new home.....they should totally get them to pay for it. Essendon could go to the G because a little boutique wouldn't suit them. It would leave the Dogs and Saints though. They don't mind debts. Eddie should tenant it with the place with the oppressive debt cycle that goes with it.
