How does her saying she's never felt safe assist the LGBTI community in feeling safe themselves?

It's a completely ridiculous thing to say IMO. I take a not-quite 2yr old to the football, my dying father and my two nieces (1 and 5) go...

Maybe 20 years ago there were concerns, even then I think the crowd self-regulated in the main, but in recent years? Please.
 
I don't feel safe in a PC overdrive world.

Why would Bevo care what nobody's think on a forum?

Yep unfortunately she does little to get the people who are likely to be trouble to behave. If she said how inclusive and warm the environment was it's more likely to have a good effect than labelling footy as intimidating. Aussie rules fans are some of the only sports fans in the world that don't need segregation as a starting point. Most are jovial and good natured and fans are indignant when people misbehave. My mum is similar, she always claims how horrific AFL fans are and what barbarians they are....she hasn't been to a game since she was about 12 (and probably the only time ) but "reads newspapers and sees it on TV". I'm pretty sure this lady is similarly experienced in AFL crowd behaviour.

He needed an excuse to stay at home and down slabs.... the pubs costs to much to get blind every night.......he's only on $350 a week to help pay Boyd's wage.

Your mum very much remembers the old days where the crowds were MUCH rowdier. I took my dad to the Gold Coast game up at Metricon and he was amazed at how different the crowds and experience was from his days watching Essendon in the early 70s. Stuff like people collapsing from too much drink and guys pissing in the stands right where they were amongst fights and shit.

I agree with all that, except I'm not sure the Essendon crowds have moved on.

But seriously, my family spent a lot of time at Etihad and it was a terrific environment. Most people are respectful of young kids, and most of the banter with opposition supporters was friendly.
Occasionally it got a bit annoying, and i recall moving once. More from the noise and swearing than anything else.

Add 20 000 esky's of beer and we'd be right back to the 70's.
