Trelaur an absolute star in the making.
Worth every bit of what they gave up.
His 2nd half of the year has been outstanding.
God what i'd give to be able to get a player like that over to the saints.
Treloar reached stardom a long time ago my friend!

Just struggling through this dead rubber Friday night game and thinking about the fixture setup.

Probably a load of holes to pick in this but........

What if we have 17 h&a then At this stage the league is split into 3 groups of 6 and fixtures for rounds 19 to 23 are set.

Round 18 is held over two weeks or throw in a bye at this point, but whichever its the rivalry/derby round.

The bottom 6 play off against each other over 5 games for first draft pick. The middle 6 have 5 games to chase the bottom 2 finals places and the top 6 have top 4 to go for against each other. Derby week result will count along with the 5 games.

Top 3 of the groups have an extra home game - maybe manufactured so they have the best away games ie. Less interstate or whatever.

Then straight into finals.

Would have to equalise cash receipts on the last round maybe - not sure how important it is tbh.

3 teams with lowest wins over the 23 games get an extra 2nd rounder as an equalisation measure as they won't likely have pick 1-3.

Should mean games are important every week.

because were gunning for 9th/10th and did not want pies to overtake us?
No because Richmond are 13th and two games behind us so a win puts them on 32pts one game behind us. If we don't make the 8 we need to finish 13th or lower to get the easier draw for next year. Teams 13th through 18th get the easiest draw the following season. So to have teams below us keep winning can only be a good thing - if we control what we can control and things fall our way we play finals, if we drop a few games we'll fall down a couple spots and could slot into 13th.

So now it's
10. St.Kilda 36pts
11. Melbourne 32pts
12. Collingwood 32pts
13. Richmond 32pts
With both Melbourne & Collingwood having superior % than us at present.

Sydney should beat Port tomorrow,
Hawthorn should beat Melbourne,

We should beat Carlton

We really should finish this round in outright 9th position (pick 10)

And then finish the season:

Loss - v Sydney
Win - v Richmond
Win - v Brisbane

If we do that, we'll finish the year 12-10 & stay in that 9th position

Yeah I agree mate but it doesn't hurt to see others below us get a win! Means at least if we drop a couple and know we're out of finals contention, we can hope to drop a few points and finish in 13th.

It happened last year, we were 12th to end the year but Melbourne beat GWS at Etihad in the final round and that put us into 13th spot - very lucky.

Not sure I really want a bottom six type draw next year; we need to consistently be playing and beating quality teams if we're any chance of progressing in the finals.
At the end of the day this is correct. Its pointless having an easy draw if we cant beat contending teams as the finals will just destroy us.

Agree. And for all this talk about how "easy" our draw was this year, it was horrible for over the first one-third of the season. I think it was overrated how easy out draw was this year, was a shocking start.

Yes I agree.
It's feels a little like tanking to hope others win so we can stay bottom 6 for a more favorable draw.
I would rather the climb from spooner, to 14th, to 9th. It's much better for the overall health of the club and confidence of the players to see such a progression.

So if we get the same thing next year (with the 'easier' draw), then why are people complaining? As you say the first quarter of the year was difficult. So wouldn't you then in fact want us to have the same next year?

Why make it harder on ourselves?

I'm not sure what the club gets from finishing 9th. We have already shown our fans optimism this year, if we finish 13th it won't have much of an affect on potential members for next season. There's more positives in finishing 13th than there is in finishing 9th.

Close, just need to put a little more thought into it.

I guess we'll agree to disagree.
Lots of people out there will go purely by the numbers ( stats are the norm these days). Even though we can see the improvement, going from 14 to knocking on the door of finals is far more descriptive of where the team sits than going from 14 to 13. The club will get even more positive press, which in turn should grow membership, which is exactly what we need.
The team itself will begin to believe that finals are achievable next year... something the club has been spruiking.
As others have suggested, we need to start beating more of the better teams now. We beat two top 8 sides this year, narrowly missing winning two others against Hawks and North. No reason we cannot be challenging the stronger teams more next year. What is the challenge and where is the growth beating the teams below us?
I really believe we are ready to take the next step.

Yeah I'm probably just being selfish - I understand why it's good to finish 9th for the broader supporter base but personally it doesn't affect me and probably won't affect most of the diehard supporters on this board if we drop a couple places. Getting a better pick in the draft and a easier schedule is more beneficial IMO. We've already shown we can beat good sides we don't need to prove that more often in a harder draw in 2017. Realistically we'll probably finish 9th or 10th anyway so what I'm saying is probably futile but interesting to think about nonetheless.
