Why would other clubs want Ross Lyon after this?

Unless you're some sort of sick sadistic bastard that enjoys seeing your own players, staff & long suffering fans being left distraught & broken hearted year after year.... theres no way in hell you'd let him anywhere near the coaches box

The gameplan is dogshit & doesn't work when it matters

His game plan does work - provided the players can execute for 110 minutes of a 120 game. It leaves NO margin for error. Missing set shots, off the ball free kicks, lapses in concentration... Half a dozen of these in a final and Lyon's team is in trouble.

Dead set, watch Lyon's presser from last night and then go and watch his presser from the 2009 GF - The exact same questions about gameplan get the exact same answers. He even makes a comparison to the 2009 GF as far as poor goal kicking skills costing his side. Hasn't evolved at all in 7 seasons of football.

Meanwhile the Hawks have changed game plan 3 times since 2008.....
Not sure if i was dreaming but didn't he refer to Jon Griffin in the same bracket as Matt Taberner, aka young?

Freo crowd showing to be a classy bunch, that video of the woman getting hit is appalling.

Yeah he did haha

When asked about how they are developing their forward line he said that Taberner is a rookie, Alex Pearce a KPD, Apeness injured and that Zac Clarke is a ruckman but Taberner and Jon Griffin (who is 30 heading into next year) will continue to develop.

When has the gameplan worked when it truly mattered?

He has now coached for 9 seasons & still has no plan B for when it's not working. How can you say the gameplan works?

Anyone else see the footage of the freo fan hitting a women? Disgusting!

Unreal isn't it. Add to that the idiots that pushed and buffered Breust, and the dickhead that shaped to slap Smith... Worse than the Filth and Richmond combined.

And security and the police did just about zero about it. Appalling.

If the AFL are fair dinkum then that gutless dog Freo supporter who hits that woman in the crowd should be banned for life. And also charged by the police of course.
This country already has a recent horrible record of domestic violence towards woman. Last thing we need is some weak prick smashing a woman at the footy.
It doesnt matter what she said or did it is totally inexcusable .
When it all boils down its just a game of footy for gods sake. Hope that dog got locked up.

apologies to all our canine companions for comparing him to you. Hes not even worthy of being a dog.

More finals losses than wins now for the Boss.

His gameplan does work. We wouldn't have made 2 Grand Finals without it.

He has consistently had his teams finish in the top four, making prelims and GF's along the way. He has had a sustained run of success at two different clubs, with lists that are universally acknowledged to be far from the most talented. The issue with the gameplan is that it requires 100% focus and commitment from all 22 players for the full 120 minutes of the game. There is no break for these guys unlike say the Hawks who are able take a breath every now and then because they know that the guy next to them has them covered if they make a mistake.

As for a plan B - The second half of the 2010 draw showed that Lyon can mix things up effectively - Gilbert to CHF on Maxwell, Roo on the wing to shake Brown, Ray tagging Swan out of the game, Kosi in the ruck, Milne and Goddard deep forward... He just lacks the belief/conviction to 'spin the magnets' on a regular basis.

He isn't the best coach in the league but everyone sticking the boots in needs to take a step back and see that he is, at the least, a very good coach.

His club loyalty, player management and list development are all different issues though. He sucks at those ;)

How very sad to see that coward hit the woman- the rest of the crowd sounded like a drunken pile of fools. Anyway, back to footy, and poor old RLyon is relegated to an also-ran coach with a seriously flawed style of coaching- so predictable and low-risk taking, that there's no margin of error of it doesn't come off. Maybe Freo might be thinking that they have done their dough?

We agree to disagree then. The gameplan needs to take into account that you can't execute everything perfectly 100% of the time. The Lyon game plan doesn't allow for this as its too defensively orientated & you're team is never far enough ahead to be 'safe' against teams of equal or greater skill. The only time perfect football exists is when the opposition is not switched 'on'... think Port in the 2007 grand final, Sydney last year

Freo better start pulling the heads of their fans into line or they'll have to start playing behind closed doors

Ah Ross. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Can't wait to hear "we're going to look to kick at least two more goals a game" this offseason like we have every one since 2008.

I don't care so much about Ross.

But that freo supporting bunch last night were ordinary. Worst bunch going around.

Without looking at the points against column, the Dockers points for column reads 1857.... You go all the way down the ladder to StKilda & see our points for column reading 1695, a difference of just 162 points

I'm sorry, but the Dockers just do not score heavily enough for a top side. TBH, I actually couldn't see them beating West Coast or North Melbourne next week. They wouldn't have kicked a big enough score

Freo board:

"if this didn't happen, and this guy kicked straight, and the umpiring went our way we would've won"

Kinda sounding like this board 6-7 years ago :$

Now come on, comparing Freo supporters to Richmond supporter is just going too far!! :)

I wouldn't slather entire supporter groups because a couple of people were less then exemplary in their conduct last night, after all when that Freo lad struck that woman he was beset by all, not just valiant Hawks supporters, to avoid further damage. These were instances, by people who should know better, and failed in those instances to be better, they've now had their 5 mins of fame and possible bans from the sport, because rightly so, it's not on regardless of who you support.

I'm convinced Ross is stuck in 1st gear with regards to his coaching, as the first thing you inherently teach a side is how to defend, since it's a "monkey see monkey do" notion that if you are poor, as a side, you stick each individual to another, tell them to go with and both teach them as well as the opposition teach them what is required to play at that level. With those that make it, the penny drops and then you have people "explode" onto the scene because they've already done this, they already get it and it's the finer controls and instances that need to be taught and evolved. Ross' teams are defensive juggernauts, there are very few instances of them being completely shut out of a game due to scoreboard pressure, but that second stage, that stage where you push through, where you evolve as a footballer where you have that 5 mins of play and as a side it is just pure sex, it doesn't happen, it falls short, the side staggers when really slingshotting should be far easier than it was since you broke their play, their team in that instance.

Ross is a good coach, gameday coach, he understands footy and how to win games and how to get there and raise the cup. He does not understand people. How they fatigue, how they think during a match, how this all affects them, how they grow, how they develop, he simply knows how they "work".
