Had the AFL and its umpires been more diligent in enforcing the laws of the game in the 90s and 00s instead of trying to make the game faster by "letting it go", we probably wouldn't even be discussing this. Pay more holding the balls/holding the mans/in the backs and a) get the game moving and b) not reward players cynically playing for stoppages.

Incidentally, coaches were using congestion as a tactic long before Wallace's ultra-flood in 2000. The author should perhaps acquaint themself with why the centre diamond (then square) was introduced in the early 70s.

I don't mind the idea at stoppages a certain number of players have to be in the fwd 50m and past halfway.

Combine that with an interchange cap of 40-50 and I'd bet $$$ we would have higher scoring games.
