AFLW General AFLW Talk Thread

If there isn't improvement next year I would be looking at making changes in the coaching department. And that's not just the coach, it includes the list management as well which has been mostly diabolical.

We currently tracking below par. Arguably not way below par, but still below expectations and if we are an ambitious and ruthless club we should be looking at the Swans and Dons and asking 'why not us?'. There is nothing structurally that prevents us from competing to make, lets say, the bottom half of the 8. I think we have a lot of the pieces in place.

Just throwing it out there though...zero chance we sack a coach who has just had a kid. Zero chance. Imagine the optics!
Our strategy has always been based around next season and Lauren Young.

I don't think Arnell's coaching has been perfect but its been a shitload better than our men's side at least.

This is so unfair - all AFLW Grand Finals should be at the home of Football at Ikon Park!

Just winning their next two finals may not be enough for the Crows to host the GF - they would also need Brisbane to lose their prelim final...

Got home and turned on the TV, it was on 7 and the SF was on, there was a centre bounce, scores was crows 11 goals to Sydney 2 with 2 minutes left. Crows kicked another goal before the end of the game.

Couldnt help but think, well Sydney have hit reality and this would be the sort of margin the crows would beat us by in a final at the moment.

But the swans won games during the minor round that we couldnt.

Last year (season 7) was the first time one of the non original 8 teams made a PF ( when it was final 6, week 2 of finals was called the PFs). North got beaten by 3 goals by Melbourne. This year North and Geelong have made it, North winning the QF and Geelong hanging on in the SF to beat 4th placed Melbourne who like the men's team went out in straight sets.

The dominance of the the original 8 sides, slowly being whittled away.

Western Bulldogs' demise has been notable - not just one of the foundation clubs, but it was they and Melbourne who staged those exhibition games before the AFLW started. Obviously not the same squad, as those were 'all-stars' games, but they were in at the ground floor. This year they came dead last with only one win and coach Nathan Burke got the DCM.

Geelong and North were part of the original expansion in season 3. North went 5-2 in their first season and Geelong went 3-4 (interestingly, because of the conference system, Geelong actually made the finals whilst North didn't). They were never really building from rock bottom as all of the 8 expansion teams since have, with the exception of Essendon.

Of the 8 expansion teams since:

West Coast, Port and Hawthorn have struggled, although the latter two have only had a couple of seasons to get it together.

St Kilda, Richmond and the SUNS struggled initially but have slowly become at least competitive.

Sydney struggled first season but then bounced very quickly.

Essendon were pretty decent from the start.

I ignored that first year of the first 2 expansion teams, because the conference system was so unbalanced in who played who, but yes North did well. 2020 covid affected the finals so I din't worry about that year.

I didn't have a problem with that - the crows were able to play their double-chance and home ground advantage cards after losing their first final. No double-dipping.

Let it be known Troy Wilkey grew up a massive Crows fan and absolutely hates Port. Yes he played for the senior magpies side for a few games and alot of the reserves but hated wearing the guernsey. Hope he has put his hatred aside and welcome aboard.

People aren't going to underperform, or actively sabotage, their job because they support another team. That's not a thing that happens in the real world. It's fine
