Surely Lampaert is a better chance in a reduced group than Phil?

If I was him I wouldn’t be drilling myself.

Gilbert has now won 4 of the 5 Monuments - Giro di Lombardy (2009 & 2010), Liege-Bastogne-Liege (2011), Tour of Flanders (2017), and Paris-Roubaix (2019). Can he become just the 4th rider to complete the set, and the first to do it in 40 years, by winning Milan San Remo?

The only previous riders to have won all 5 monuments are:
  • Eddy Merckx (19 monuments, last win 1976)
  • Roger De Vlaeminck (11 monuments, last win 1979)
  • Rik Van Looy(8 monuments, last win 1975)

He'd be a good chance.

I wouldn't have thought Nibali was either, or that Gilbert had a chance of winning Paris Roubaix.

Nibali would always have a better chance of winning MSR ( even though it was a surprise ) because he can create a gap on the Poggio, which he also did in 2012 when he was third - Gilbert was always a chance at PR after he won Flanders - You have to remember, Gilbert was forbidden from riding cobbled races for five years when he was at BMC.

So Nibali can create a gap on the Poggio, but Gilbert can't?

Gilbert can't go up Alpe d'Huez with the front runners, but he's more explosive than almost any other rider in the peleton when it comes to short, sharp, climbs like the Poggio.

No, Gilbert can't get a solo gap on the Poggio - On a very good day he could get a gap but would be joined by others - Sagan in 2017 got a gap on the Poggio but was joined by Alaphalippe and Kwiatkowski - Check the last 15 years and see how many riders ( solo ) have got a gap on the Poggio and won MSR - You'll find its slim pickings.

I accept that it's slim pickings - but if Nibali can do it, then Gilbert definitely can. He would need everything to go right for him, but Nibali proves that it can be done. Gilbert is more explosive than Nibali, on those short & sharp climbs. If there's any rider capable of creating that race winning gap on the Poggio, it's Gilbert.

Matthews, Alaphilippe, Wellens have all won GT stages.
They all sat back smoking a pipe for the majority of the race whilst VDP attacked off the front with zero team support.
Then he beat them in a sprint riding from the front.

Who knows how he will go on the killer mountain stages in a GT, even the best of climbers can get found out in those stages.
The rest of his game is without question capable of winning a GT.
Most importantly, he is not scared to take the race on.
He could comfortably be a very successful classics rider, but he has far more talent than just classics racing.

For a start MVP is too big to be a GC contender - Evanopoel is the one who could be a GC rider in the future.

Having a gander at the stage profiles for the Giro this year and the first week looks like a cracker

Actually its a disappointing Giro profile for 2019 - Three ITT's is a waste of resources, first half lacks any clear chance to affect GC, except for the two ITT's - The first half needs one or two hilly/mountainous stages.

Beating Sagan easy?
Would give him a run for his money.

He has already committed to going full road after the 2020 Olympics.

Faster sprinter IMO, probably not as good tactically yet. His sprint at national champs after being in the break for a long time was a bit of entree for what he did at Amstel. That type of rider could certainly win a sprint jersey in a GT.
