I figured since a lot of us live on the Gold Coast or surrounding areas (Tweed, Logan, Brisbane etc.) it would be cool to share news/information we gather about our beautiful city. The Gold coast is evolving at a quick rate and there are many topics to discuss and debate (lots of controversial ones too) so let's start off with the ferry service which launched TODAY! (Hopo.com.au for more information)

Current stops include Surfers Paradise, HOTA, Marina Mirage, Sea World and Broadwater Parklands (there are plans in place to run ferries from those destinations to Metricon on event days). Seems like it's relatively affordable to ride with a single-use ticket costing $5. Hopo is short for 'hop on, hop off' for anyone that is wondering.

Not interesting in discussing the ferries? No problem. We also have the construction starting on the light rail extension to Burleigh soon and Palm Beach residents vehemently opposing the next extension through their suburb on the way to the airport (I'm sure Mr Bods has an opinion on this one), the creation of a new international terminal at the Gold Coast Airport as well as a Rydges hotel adjacent to the airport to open in 2020, Star Casino hosting the Logies each year, the booming northern suburbs of Coomera, Ormeau and Pimpama, the M1 upgrade which is currently underway between Mudgeeraba and Reedy Creek plus the next M1 upgrade which will begin straight afterwards and will extend from Palm Beach down to the NSW border, the recent Hollywood movies filmed at Movie World such as Godzilla vs Kong/Dora the Explorer/Pacific Rim/Aquaman/Thor:Ragnarok/San Andreas/Pirates of the Caribbean, the stand off currently taking place between the QLD state government and Star Casino Broadbeach over a second casino being approved on the GC, Hollywood celebrities visiting the Gold Coast like Pamela Anderson two weeks ago.

I'm sure there are lots of other topics y'all might want to discuss but the ones above are just some I could think of off the top of my head. So pick a topic and let's go!

I’m all for light rail going to the airport and then on to Coolangatta.
If that had of been there in my Currumbin days that would have been unreal.
After that I’m a bit 50-50 about the next phase whether it goes to Robina or Nerang.

There is one big problem with light rail though-people I speak to often feel unsafe on the light rail, it gets a lot of druggies and people with anger/mental issues and packs of deadshit young blokes who can’t behave quietly when appropriate. A number of women have said that to me.

The Ferry sounds unreal. We need to be ambitious on the GC and go hard with our infrastructure.

Did you find other residents in Currumbin were as supportive of the light rail running through their suburb or were you one of the few who supported it?

Interesting read your take on the safety of the light rail. Admittedly, I don't ride the trams very often but I haven't seen anything sinister while I've been on board. I'm also male and these complaints have come from females so obviously that's a different dynamic altogether.

I feel we have always been very ambitious as a city but we definitely need to continue that ambition to progress further. Getting the Commonwealth Games was a huge step forward for our city but there also seems to be a fair few NIMBYs on the GC who try to stall/prevent infrastructure upgrades. Luckily the politicians who oversee the future of this city seem to have always been pro development and that's allowed us to really grow over the last 20 years.

The GC Highway is very wide through Currumbin and wouldn’t have much impact On residents so it has a different dynamic to Palm Beach.

I don't travel to the Gold Coast that often, but it seems that stretch of M1 at Reedy Creek has been in the process of being upgraded for about 5 years. Has there actually been any progress?

I think the Palm Beach residents are basically against anything from Council at the moment since the GCC allowed the wall of concrete to be built on their foreshore between the 2 creeks

Certainly hasn't taken 5 years. The reason I can say that so confidently is because the local government made a big deal about it not being touched until the Commonwealth Games had concluded in April 2018. There has been quite a bit of progress from what I've been able to see and a decent stretch of the north bound lane opened up a week or two ago. I think completion of the current upgrade is set for mid-2020 but they are going to progressively open more stretches as they finish them. The upgrade between Varsity Lakes to Tugun (QLD-NSW border) is set to begin in mid-2020 so construction will immediately continue once the current upgrade is finished.

What does everyone think about South East Queensland hosting the 2032 Olympics? We officially launched our bid yesterday and the Gold Coast is going to play a pivotal role due to our recent upgrades in sporting infrastructure.

I think it would be awesome, the worlds media would be focussed on Qld and all it’s natural beauty. It would have a lasting tourism benefit and create new infrastructure across the state

I wonder what events gc would get. And sunny coast. And regional areas. Assume brisbane would get the athletics and opening/closing

What Stadium is suitable in Brisbane for athletics?
QEII Stadium from the 1982 Commonwealth Games.

Tear it down and rebuild it in to a modern stadium.

Probably then gift it to the second Brisbane NRL team they’ll eventually bring in.

As a sports lover would like to see the games in Qld.
But the reality is only one city ( Los Angeles) has not made a huge loss in the last 10 Games.
Can you imagine the cost of security in 13 years time.
Not worth the cost or effort.
Besides we look to have some serious opposition.

That worked well at Homebush eh
Not quite sure what you’re getting at, as I’m not familiar with Homebush, or the NRL.

If it’s location, QEII is a prime Southside location. The only knock is that there’s no rail service right next door.

Could a spur line be built? What would nearest line/existing station be?
