I used to do this back in the day for random fun when we changed to Roos and i'm bored so here's the list by mfc coach they debuted under.

Bailey
Gawn, Tmac (I'm counting the era, I'm not counting caretakers even if he first played under Todd Viney)

Neeld
Viney

Roos
Salem, Trac, Oliver

Goodwin
The rest

King
White?

Interview with Guerra in Hun today that goes into the club's trade period. Seems like he's basically been given the job of being the club's mouthpiece which isn't surprising.

Pretty much a fluff piece but the most interesting part is this at the end.

The decision to sack contracted premiership coach Simon Goodwin cost Melbourne over $1 million in the soft cap yet it will not influence their 2026 plans.

Melbourne also moved on veteran coach Mark Williams and is tossing up moves to employ a new head of strategy and rejigging their development model.

“The soft cap for Goody was taken care of in this year,” confirms Guerra.

“That’s been sorted. So we have got a clear (2026) cap. We have landed (assistant coach) Jared Rivers, we have landed our VFL coach Rhett McLennan.

May seems like a good fella who can't handle the piss. I'd say this is about as good as someone could take this

“It’s one of the best meetings I’ve had,” Guerra says, adamant May was always on board with the club’s moves.

"We sat Steven down and said, ‘Steve, you got 12 months to run. To be honest with you, we’re probably not renewing you at the end of next year. So when we’re having a chat to you this time next year, we’re probably saying goodbye to you. We’ve got a good crop of youth coming through, and we have to play them, otherwise we’re going to lose them, and they’re in the spot that you’re occupying. So to you mate, we’re probably going to prioritise youth over you, and if that means you want to go and look for another option, then do it.’

“He stopped, and he looked at us, and he said, ‘I totally get it’.

“He said, ‘The club’s been so good for me. I’ve got a premiership here. I’ll always love the club.’

"He said, ‘But just let me be clear, you’re sacking me’,

“(I said) ‘No, we’re not sacking we’re just being honest with you.’

“He goes, ‘all right. I’ll look for a trade, but if I can’t get a trade, can I come back?’

“So in Kingy’s words you come back but earn your spot like everyone else.

“He said, ‘If I don’t get a trade I will come back in and earn my spot and commit to helping develop the kids who will take my spot.’

“You can’t ask for anything more from a player. Steve King spoke to him yesterday and he’s fully charged to come back in, which is great.”

Sounds like May never wanted to be traded. I don't think it was a hit to his ego that nobody was keen on him. I think there just wasn't any effort to look for a new home.
Did a medical at Collingwood, so not sure he wasn't interested in moving.

I totally agree.

Don’t know if you have heard much of his radio stuff from Swaziland or wherever you are, but he’s a regular guest in some thing or other with Gary Lyon and some other characters. My takeaway about May is:

  • honest / straight shooter
  • clever about footy, and not stupid about life in general
  • capable of self-reflection and seeing his own faults and acknowledging them
  • capable of taking the piss out of himself

He’s a guy I think I like. I’d love to have a beer with him (in the unlikely event he would like to have a beer with me).

Everyone has points against, and he’s raked up a few that have been made public. But that’s everyone. You weigh up pros and cons.

One thing I do know is he’s the best fullback I have seen play for Melbourne by a fair margin.

I think he was told to look for a trade but in his heart he wanted to stay. He knows it's just business and is prepared to do tje team thing.
Maybe. Not sure his history backs that up, but the media quotes did him lots of favours given he was asked to leave.

May was my favourite player at one stage, but not sure the above is backed up by the evidence tbh.
I mean not stupid about looking at life and talking about it reflectively. Never sounds stupid.

On the actual doing life bit though, yeah he’s had some suspect moments

We'll never really know, but I think had he not been told to look elsewhere he wouldn't have. The way I see it Trac and the club splitting ways mutual but Trac would be OK with staying had there been no deal. I think though that it was always highly likely going to get done. I think the club definitely wanted Oliver out and there was no way he was coming back. May told to look elsewhere and would have been fine leaving but I don't think he really wanted to. I think that situation was handled very well. Just the reality where the team and May are at.

The players made it clear all 3 weren't wanted at the club anymore. May will need to keep up his charm offensive when he gets back for preseason if he doesn't want it to be awkward. When Gawn is having subtle digs at Trac in the media you can only guess how bad it all was behind closed doors.
