I feel like the time to pat himself on the back for this (which was obvious to everyone) was probably after trade period.
"First time I have heard anyone from the club admit that"

Because sacking our head coach, dumping our star midfielder(s), Kate Roffey resigning, admitting we dealt with Christian Petracca poorly etc etc etc was absolutely not any sort of tacit admission that our culture was poor :drunk: :drunk: :drunk:

Kane Cornes basically angry Melbourne Demons didn't release a club statement saying "Guess what everyone, we're ****ing shit".

Maybe, but I think Gawn coming out this week and saying 'oh yeah actually maybe the culture was bad...' couldn't really be ignored.
Meh, Gawn's a company man through and through and he was basically left to be the face of the club while all the decisions were made above his head. He was never going to go on radio and hang people out to dry.

I mean, that's the whole point....

"Tacit admissions" isn't a super effective comms strategy I wouldn't have thought.

And what a point it is! Next time Gawn should commit to airing out our dirty laundry even more.

It's a bit bloody late to dunk on the club, as toump said we've cleaned house already both on and off field.
Considering no one believed Gawn when he said it was good, who gives a shit if he says it wasn't now?

It's just about honesty isn't it? Bit ridiculous some are suggesting Gawn should come out and say everything sucks, but let's remember this was the coach and CEO saying it was the best culture they'd ever seen. Then Gawn and others from the club backed the truck over it again and again despite the questions.

Not that hard to come out and say 'We've had some challenges and we're working on them' is it? Just shows disdain for members and supporters to hand them a turd and tell them it's flowers over and over again while asking for their money.

I just don't think you should expect your captain to tell it like it is. They're all company men that are made to tow the line. That's kind of their job.
Think we're missing that it was the senior coach and CEO who did the overselling. Plus, big difference between 'best culture I've ever seen' and something like 'we're not perfect, we're always working on things internally, that's what robust organisations do'.

It's not a choice between say everything is perfect or say everything sucks.

How dense do you have to be to need a club statement explaining this.

These are the same people who thought we were still in the premiership window up until mid last year don't forget so probably did need it in giant font

Didn't we get a club statement telling us it was the best culture ever? How dense do you have to be to think a member driven organisation should not run on 'tacit admissions' as an effective way to communicate when they're saying the exact opposite stuff in public.

This is actually pretty sharp

I'm not a fan. I don't mind leaning into the skiing/cheese platter stereotypes because who cares. I don't like the whole "loveable losers" schtick though, it just reinforces the perception of the club.

Don't remember Gawn ever really pumping up our culture. Actually I do remember he specifically denied a drug culture while admitting there were still issues. Mostly he just ran damage control.

Good clubs handle things inside the club and we certainly didn't do that but Gawn was doing his best not to make the spectacle worse.

Our membership video was "Guess what everyone, we're ****ing shit."

DON THE VEIL

Peak 2026 right there.
It's not good enough to overturn half the club, we need a shitty generic twitter statement that no one will give more than 2 seconds of thought to be a real club 😂

Not sure why everyone keep defaulting back to Gawn - Maybe because of his statements this week - But we're talking about the Goodwin and Pert comments about 'best cultcha eva'. Gawn of course had to fall in line, so I'm not really having a go at him, it's more the precedent set mostly by Pert. Gawn did his best with it.

The point is though - Cornes is 100% correct. How could you believe anything the club says now? We've been probably the most inauthentic clubs over the last 4-5 years. I'm hoping that will change, but Guerra is 0-3 in his promises so far so I'm not sure it has yet.

Who care's about Goodwin or Pert? They got sacked. They don't matter anymore.

This is why I don't get why Cornes is still bringing this up. We've got pretty much completely new leadership now. So this gotcha article is completely redundant.

People like Korn and Gaddy Lyon were calling it out as BS at the time, as were many of the posters here who are now saying 'who cares' funnily enough, and they copped it from happy clappers and the like, where now, finally, the captain is begrudgingly admitting they were right. Cornes is bringing it up because it was this week that Gawn was able to tell the truth.

Find the defensiveness over this one pretty funny tbh. Honestly did not have BigFooty becoming Demonland on my bingo card for 2026.

I really don't get your agument. We were all happy to see the back of the previous regime. Now that they're gone I'm interested in looking forward. I don't really see the point in dragging all this back up again. It's been dealt with, move on. Not sure how that makes me a demonland nuffy but whatever.

There's no argument to be had, so I'm not sure why everyone is arguing with me tbh. Cornes is right. That's just facts. And I'm sure many, if not all, of those arguing about it would have been questioning everything being said by the club at the time. I didn't realize BigFooty was now only a forward-looking anonymous text based AFL website. Will keep that in mind, and hope you do too.

Wut. Almost everyone here has called the club out for years about their bullshit talk.
