I dont mind the diamond defence, but it needs flexibility. What happens when we encounter a team like Adelaide that just flies through the middle on the rebound off half-back.

Against Saints and Dogs, and even against Brisbane the amount of goals we concede after kicking a behind is crazy.

Once a team gets over the 70 metre mark, basically they have a paddock to run and we're outnumbered with a dozen players running back to play catchup.

In difficult times I wouldn't mind seeing the old 1v1 contested footy. I'd back our players to win contested ball more often than not.

I get the feeling it's a piece of a puzzle that we're putting together.

Diamond defence when we're going for the jugular, some sort of form of Roos' Contest Constriction® when we're not

It would be ludicrous if we had all our eggs in the diamond basket. I suspect we're seeing a lot of it this year to really cement it in the players' minds.

I like it. It says we are going to attack and makes the other team think on their feet. It did notice against brisbane that they moved 2 men to defence in the second quarter to defend us winning the centre clearance

It is probably why we are the leading centre clearance team in the league

Has had about 5 or 6 games back in the reserves and has been in good form, has put his hand up this week and said he's ready to play back in the AFL. Paul Roos said he won't be far off getting a game. Reckon he'll be back within 3 weeks, possible chance this week.
Has he? You ******* ripper, imagine the roar if he comes back QBD

The old man says Sydney under Roos had 3 game plans:

The attack: Throw everything at them with run and carry, speed and good ball movement.

The maintain: Go toe-to-toe with the opposition, force them to fight to score while scoring yourself. Heavy defensively but not 100%

The shutdown: Stop the opposition at all costs. Generally stops your own scoring too, but doing everything to stop them putting up numbers.

What would happen is that the attack would only run for ~20% of the game. The Swans would build a 5-6 goal lead in minutes. They'd then flip to maintain, scoring one for every one the opposition put on. Come Q4, they'd flip to shutdown, throwing a blanket over it.

Seems we have 2/3 figured out.

Can sorta see that. I used to reckon the Swans under Roos were only worth watching when they were about 5 goals down and had to go for it. For a dour team they could play some exhilarating footy when they turned it on.

We've recruited for the gameplan really well I think. Huge emphasis on players being able to win the contested ball, because with such an attacking style we need to be winning more than 50% of every 1v1/2v2/3v3 situation.

What really shits me is the fact the Bombers got their players suspended for a year & they are all lining up to re-sign while at Melbourne we are looking like we are finally heading in the right direction & no one with the exception of Viney is putting pen to paper.
I'm all for criticizing TMacs strange reluctance to sign, but it is pretty clear we're signing up the lesser names first to sort the contracts, then will slowly move up the tree in terms of priority signings. I've got no doubt we'll keep all our OOC players this year excluding TMac who is up in the air, and Hogan I think is likely now but still not confirmed (Even though he is signed for 2017).

Seems like a completely illogical way to go about it... Surely u lock in your absolute guns first then feed the crumbs of what's left to your second stringers like Hunt and Harmes (who will be guns but they aren't yet). To have Kent, Garlett, Jetta, McDonald, Watts and I'll include Hogan, not locked in at this stage of the year is absolute madness. As a poster mentioned earlier, essendon injected who the f knows into their players and all they have left to sign up is Hurley. What it tells me is that our players don't give a shit about team ethos and are in if for themselves and their own bank accounts or they have little faith in Goody as a senior coach.

Really? Really?? Hyperbole much? Unless you've genuine inside information to back you up, that is one of the more ridiculous conclusions I've seen drawn

Do you also get furious when you watch ACA or read the Herald Sun?

Your reference to bits of a grand puzzle makes me feel calmer.

Look at the dogs. They have Tom Boyd taking up half of their salary cap and yet the rest of their players, players far more deserving than spud Boyd, have total buy in with the direction of the club and Luke Beverage as coach. As far as I'm aware, there aren't any news articles about any of their players delaying contract talks or trying to get a bigger piece of the pie, as they know that collectively they are capable of much bigger things.

I see the same promise at the dees, and yet it's frustrating as I don't think ALL of our players see this, or they just place a higher value on things other than team success. If the club, as reported in The Age, has put what they deem to be a more than reasonable offer to Tom McDonald that has subsequently been flatly rejected, then I do wonder what his priorities are in not trying to get the deal done. And of course he's entitled to get as much money out of the club as possible, even though there's probably a dozen players on our list just as deserving of the money he wants for himself.

In my job, I've been involved in a few things that have become "newsworthy" and have been reported on. And one thing I've learned is to never, ever trust what has been reported or the spin that has been put on it. They report for clicks/eyeballs, and that means that outrage/sensationalism is far more important than accuracy. My advice: just chill

That being said the only alarm bells the media are ringing are on Hogan and McDonald.

I must admit I did laugh when they were saying Gerard Healey had 'big news on Tom McDonald's' contract On the Couch the other day, only for Healey to say "I know nothing."

I've heard maybe one mention of Jetta and Kent, and that's it. That's why I'm not too worried about getting these guys signed up.

Most likely we're just taking our time dotting our i's and crossing our t's

I'm yet to see a single Brisbane fan in that thread admit to his tactics being even a little bit dodgy. It's cringe worthy to see such blind faith in a player. Contrast them to the Dogs fans in the McLean thread, the vast majority said they hate his staging and want it stamped out of his game.

I'd like to think if one of our youngsters came into the side and started drawing frees like a soft cock, we'd be man enough to admit it.
I think we would admit it for sure. Dees fans bag on our players as if they are murderers if they kick one clanger for the game.

Greg Denham just said on SEN that he believes McDonald is a long way down the track with his contract and isn't far away at all.
Pretty disappointing really. Makes it much more difficult to get on our high horse in judgement with this sort of news.

Denham said something positive about Melbourne? You sure?
He absolutely went to town on pumping us up actually, thinks a massive finals chance. Not going to win a flag this year, but will be threatening soon for a while.

KB kept trying to compare Richmond and suggest a premiership rivalry between us and them, and Denham kept laughing at him, was quite entertaining.

He did bag Watts not long after tho, so some balance was restored.
