Not sure if I should post this here, didn't really want to make a new topic though. Does anybody seriously believe that Jack Grimes is in our best 22? My mates and i continually agree this point. EVERYTIME he gets the ball he turns it over by foot, he is a plodder at best. Even last night playing on from full back and getting his kick smothere. This is not based on just last nightthis has been 3 years of turnovers. If you sit behind the goals and you have heard in the past "that's our captain, great turnover Grimesy" that is me.

I want to like him, I really do but he's making it hard the last couple years. His first 20 or so games I thought we'd uncovered such a good potential 'quaterback' player. I feel like since the captaincy he hasn't had a moment on field where he has been composed. Although it is the worst moments that stick in my mind

He'll generally do some solid defending work and back it up with a clanger. So really the alternate camps of 'He's good, lay off him' and 'he's terrible' are, in a sense, both right. I guess it almost comes down to a week by week basis: did the work he do defensively outweigh whatever mistakes he made?

Keep in mind all the players make mistakes, its just that in defense they are generally more apparent. And clangers (as opposed to, say, poor positioning or lack of 4 quarter effort) are a lot easier for the general public to see.

So to answer your question, maybe.

It maybe because I always focus on him and how he uses the ball but boy does he turn it over a lot and cost us goals. At least 2-3 a game. I agree that his one on one work is good and his spoiling work is good but every time he gets the ball i freak out. I guess it could be decision making but his execution is very poor and also he seems to panic. Personally I don't think he is in our best 22.

I'm pretty worried about Grimes' future tbh. I've always liked his approach but more and more players are starting to attack the game hard like he does so he doesn't stand out as much in that regard these days.

His kicking is an issue. Terlich equally can stuff his kicks up but he provides rebound so it's not clear cut between those two.

If he knuckled down and went with the more basic option like jetta he could still play a role , but I don't think you can carry two lock down smalls in modern footy .. He's kinda keeping the spot warm for someone who can kick

Besides I think there's another 'forward' who won't be with us in 2016, and which iv made known here before, and that's Jeremy Howe. I'd be devasted but I think he will seek opportunities elsewhere at the end of the year. Just a gut feel tho based only my own paranoia so no need to panic.
Hmm maybe it was more than just paranoia..

Quote from an article in the age

But Melbourne travelled without Bernie Vince, Jack Watts, Jack Viney, Jack Grimes and Jeremy Howe.

Can't have been that bad if they didn't notice him

If you've heard it from any other part of the ground (I'm too scared to say it when behind the sticks) - thats me.

Hyperbole? If he really cost us at least 2-3 goals a game, he would not be in the side.

Chris Dawes is 26 this year. His age really surprises me as he seems to have been around for a lot longer.

I've not checked my facts but since becoming a Dee this has been his first full preseason. I'm interested to know if you think Chris will be a solid to average second forward as he is now or if he has more to give.

I personally think he hasn't hit his top gear yet. A full preseason is a start, but I think as with most KPF's and rucks (which he is not as Collingwood proved :p ) take a lot longer to get to their best. The real benefit of Dawes sadly won't be seen in my eyes for at least another season or 2 though. Jesse needs a few years before he demands the best defender and Mitch Elark pissed off after he could have really given Dawes the chance to excel. The other factor that hasn't helped the big fella is our ability to get the ball forward with any real purpose at a decent rate. I'm hoping this will be less of an issue for us though.

Dawes was a decent player with Cloke when he was used as a forward and he has been ok for us (and great a couple of times) but he is coming to his right age now and looks very fit. I hope we can get the most out of him.

The guy has concrete hands and jumps at the footy wrong , I think he can be a very good working chf but average defenders have no trouble stopping him 1-1

Yeah his hands are shocking. I know its a bit of a joke around here but it really disrupts momentum of any play if we get the ball to half forward and then he spills it. He's a decent option but I think this is pretty much his best output.

He lost confidence at some point. When he was very young at Collingwood, his hands were fine - he used to take plenty of solid grabs.

Pretty sure it was after he had an operation on him thumb or something like that , but at 26 and with his body size and shape he really should be able to hit the footy hard and at a good height which he doesn't do
